No substitute for continuing riding training. Practice, practice, practice. As a MSF and Harley Rider Coach, I can't stress enough how important it is to learn the proper way to handle a motorcycle, especially, when you move up to the heavy weight touring motorcycles. I often hear, " I don't want to practice because I may drop my bike". This is the exact reason we all need to take additional training and if nothing else practice in a safe parking lot.

I knew you would agree with me. I’m getting comments saying that slow speed parking lot training and practice is useless, but I’m all for it. Thank you for watching Rick.

@bobrose3298 Knowing how to be in control of a bike at slow speeds will translate when you are out on the road and you have to perform an evasive maanuerver to avoid an accident. I love it when people say, I had to lay it down to avoid hitting the car. Well, if you used good road strategy, you would have anticipated the worst and been prepared to avoid an accident. It all starts with being able to control the bike.

Retired military so forced to take the MSF course many times. I learned nothing because I was already an experienced rider and thought of it as just another way for the military to punish riders. But that’s not the reason I’m not a fan of any classes that are restricted to a course in a parking lot. Nobody dies doing a u-turn at 10mph. For classes that happen on a track or on the streets at higher speeds, I’m all for it 👍🏼

MSF has an Advanced Rider Course but is appears most training sites don't schedule the classes since they generate little revenue and they would rather use the time for the Basic courses. I took the ChampStreet track based course using my bike and it was filled with practical skills. The downside, its expensive and with travel it was a 4 day weekend. Its nice to talk about training but unless you live in a major metro area, its difficult to get. And, by-the-way, I find most bagger riders to be the least skilled in the course and all of them complained about wearing safety gear. What I learned is to give bagger riders a very wide margin of safety, even in a parking lot. .

I ride a bagger, as do most of my friends and I think we are all very skilled riders. I believe we’ve all had training, so that helps. I’d love to try the training you mentioned, but it is pricey. I’ve found that most community colleges and some Harley-Davidson dealers offer training. I think it’s important to, but I’m finding that a lot of people think it’s a waste of time. That’s unfortunate. Thank you for watching!
