Watching this video I had the same enthusiasm as opening a gift I had long been waiting for. I get such a soothing feeling as I watch this video. Love your use of reclaimed wood in redoing your porch. From all your videos I take it powder blue is your favorite color? LOL Liked the new garden. I admire too your knowledge of nature. You take the time to enjoy what God gives us. If you aren't the hardest working woman in the world I don't know who is. I don't think there's a tool you don't have or know how to use. I learn so much about the forest from watching your videos as well. You live in such a beautiful area and your home is turning out amazing looking. *Memories...*
Almost 60 years ago, me helping my Grandmother in her rented stretch of garden in a little village at the river Moselle growing and harvesting lettuce, red cabbage, onions, some beans some cauliflower, and potatos, and strolling through the woods with my father to learn edible mushrooms, and collect wild blueberries...
My Gandma's brother, living in an old cottage, with a giant garden, growing EVERYTHING, having chickens, rabbits, two to four sheep, some pigs. Yes, still a water pump in the kitchen to get groundwater, and an entire blacksmith's shop in the back yard to shoe horses.
About 40 years ago now, during the Ceaucescu area, when our government bought out Romanian people of German decent (Banater Schwaben, Siebenbürger Sachsen).
Those, mostly elderly, people, though receiving substantial pensions now, could not let go their habits they were used to:
As long as they were able to walk, they went out to the forest to collect mushrooms as I learnt as a child, or to gather wild blueberries and blackberries, - something, almost noone would have done here anymore for years.
Not only did they stick to their habits of dressing in their traditional clothes, but, although meanwhile living in modern Apartments, and being in a financial state allowing to buy anything of need in a nearby shop, they kept their rabbit stable and chickens in the garden behind the building, or just conquered some abandonned square metres to set up their little vegetable garden even in the midst of a city, - sometimes to the dismay of their neighbours, sometimes to their pleasure. I just loved that archaic, rural touch.
Unfortunately that old generation has passend away by the years, and the younger ones are not carrying on that tradition any more...
:) It's still like that here. Our people have small vegetable gardens even in the cities. You can see shepherds on the field with their sheep near the cities. Many things have changed, and people are starting to forget what their grandparents taught them. But there are also many people that understand that we need to preserve these more than ever, many young people that return to the villages. So I hope things will go well here. We are in good hands. People would no more be able to identify edible wild fruit from poisonous ones, nore know what birch or elderberry are good for - they could not even identify carrots or potatos growing in a field. So sad...
@@JohannasDreamHome My husband is from Northern Spain and his grandfather was a shepherd! His grandparents lived in a small village and had no modern heating system in their home. He remembers a trench in the living room that they would burn wood in to keep the house warm in winter. They gathered mushrooms from the forest and raised a cow in a room connected to their small home.
Being raised here in America with no real traditional values or knowledge of the natural world we are a virtual desert in every conceivable way. I hope that we all go back to living close to nature as was intended by our Creator. It is obvious that those with beauty in their souls gravitate to such a simple, yet fruitful, life.
@@JamieSantos Living that close to nature is not possible any more. There's more than seven billion people living on our planet these days. It would need to reduce population at least by the factor ten to get close to such a state, I think...
Providing ones own food is a labour and time consuming business, and we are all chasing the money for a living. Not many have time and knowledge for gardening, keeping animals or slaughtering them any more.
However, some could be done, even by people living in cities. I think of tomatos, strawberries or onions in flower pots on the balcony, f.e.

I notice that your favorite color combination is Black and Old blue. Creating the super antique effect is an excellent technique for Frenchy house designs.
It is the original color the old house was painted with. That's one of the many reasons I am using it. Thank you very much!

Every project you touch seems to turn out perfectly. This is only my second video of yours but I'm sure the others are the same. I thought I had a pretty good success rate at about 90% but you have me beat!!! And your projects are much more difficult than mine. I wish I had more time for these things because it's so rewarding.
