- Anthony Cullins "Ain't What It Used To Be" Live @ Casa Estrellas
Filmed/ Recorded 12/18/2021
From the upcoming album "21" coming out on Barn Time Records soon...
It’s not everyday that you turn 21. Anthony Cullins who has been known throughout his adolescence as “The Fallbrook Kid” no longer can be called the kid. Anthony has always been praised for his virtuosic guitar playing, but now people are getting hip to his incredible voice and intricate songwriting. He draws inspiration from a wide variety of music. You can hear hints of so many genres in his playing and compositions. Some of his influences are R&B, funk, rock and blues, prominently displayed in his eclectic improvisational style, ranging from Hendrix and Clapton to George Benson and Wah Wah Watson. Having so many musical mentors and influences has led him to create his own sound that will leave you feeling inspired and nostalgic.
When he's not backing up other artists Anthony can be caught playing around San Diego and beyond with his project. Always with a cast of incredible musicians from all around town. For this special night he decided to call 2 drummers, Malachi Johnson and Phil Pardel, and percussionist Ty Kiernan. As well as local legends Jody Bagley on Hammond B2/ Wurlitzer/ Voc and ripping Trombonist Wesley Etienne from the band Boostive. Anthony often uses Malachi and Phil on gigs but this night was the first time the two actually met. The amount of fun being had on stage was monumental, largely due to the rhythm section playing off of each other. I don’t remember the last time I had that much fun on stage.
It seemed only right to have the celebratory show in his hometown of Fallbrook, CA. Casa Estrellas has always been good to Anthony, giving him a place close to home to hone in his talents. The joint was bumping and the love in the room was something special. I knew this was going to be a show for the books so we had to set up a proper recording/ film crew. Huge thanks to Tyre Wilcox, Dillan Stockham and Noah Schuler for capturing the magic of this night so well. Also to Jason Soda at Palomino Sound in LA for mixing the whole live album.
The future looks bright for this young talent. Anthony is currently working on a couple studio projects that he is excited to share with the world. His last album “Hittin All Cylinders” came out 5 years ago, and the world has been waiting patiently ever since to see what Anthony’s been cooking up. We hope you enjoy this live birthday celebration and that you share it with your friends and family.
