Thanks for being our bike professor, BikemanforU. I always enjoy watching your videos. You've probably helped thousands of people get their bikes on the road, and I know you'd like to hear that your presence on the scene is much appreciated. I subscribed.
MAN!! Wish I'd watched your video this morning!
Went to my local bike shop to get tires for my newly acquired Schwinn Twinn tandem!! The dealer sold me the 590 26x1 3/8" telling me this is what I needed. I got out to the car a little concerned because I remember hearing about "oddball Schwinn tire sizes" and Googled only to see something about this "S6" size....went back inside and decided to PAY THEM to install the front tire just so I could be sure. THEY COULDN'T GET the 590 tire on!!
Then, the mechanic dug a little and said "Yeah, this ISN"T going to work"....you need this "S6" size.
They didn't have what I needed, so off to finding these online!!
Thank you, Thats what I needed to know.
@Spookeay Don't worry about it.. Have another beer...It will be OK..
Hi I just found out about bikeman a few weeks ago on youtube I just love it i like to know what happen to him is he doing more videos i hope so.
will switching to 37-590 rims work? Will they be too big for the wheel wells on my 58 Schwinn Racer?
Happy 4th of July 🇺🇸
Mr Bikeman. I have a 1959 Schwinn Breeze single speed. It has 26 x 1-3/8 S6 Rims. Cant find tires, tubes. Are they the same as the older 3-speed tires? Can you help??
1959 Schwinn. Did they make an S-5 rim? can't make it out, could be S-6. Can you help?
Bike man I need a 26x1 3/8 white wall, that’s 590 iso ,is there any that exist
Stop teasing me with those tires! *licks screen*
@Marius011 - a schwinn monoply would be where schwinn rims took a special sized tire which they did, but then schwinn went and bought all the tire manuf. and only made & sold this special size, that would be a monoply ! schwinn approved tires but did not make them internally they bought them from tire manuf., secondly schwinn went way above and beyond to sell exclusively to small family owned bicycle shops as opposed to big chain stores and thats as american as it can get ! wise up
YESHSHSHS!!!! This is the awesomest!
What are you supposed to do in 2021 when you can’t get 37-597 tubes for the tires anymore? The 37-590’s tubes are too big and pop the bead on Kenda 37-597 S5/S6 tires! Nobody makes the correct tubes anymore...unbelievable. They made millions of these bikes...why no tubes? Anyone got any suggestions for this problem. I have a 58 Schwinn racer I still like riding with a flat.
How do I get me some...
This dude is beyond cool
Harvard Yard ?
So did not knw this so I ordered the reg. & MADE IT FIT lol
Will a 26 x 1 1/2" tire fit a 26 x 1 3/8 rim. It's only 6 mm difference. 590mm 1 3/8 versus 584 for the 1 1/2.. Please reply. thanks.
As long as I been mechanicking on bikes, I felt worrisome about putting larger or smaller tires on a given rim size. I think you'll be okay, as long as you're careful about getting the bead to seat evenly all around. It might be helpful to test-ride them at a moderately lower pressure than max, at first. Fatter mountain bike tires are often factory-installed on some awfully skinny rims, after all, but if you have an older cruiser, they may lack anything much of a hook on the rim bead, if there's even a hook at all.
Some rims are flat-walled on the inside, where the bead of the tire seats. This is the instance where I'd worry the most about going to a larger size. I can't account for every rim that's ever been made in a 26 x 1-3/8 size, but that's what I would go by. I've checked in at various bike forums and haven't found a definitive answer anywhere. I've read some good articles on tires over the years, but I only have a handful of all my old bike mags anymore.
But the tire itself is a also factor in this decision. Try installing a tube in one of the tires and inflating it just enough to fill out the tire without expanding it, and measuring the distance from the outside of one bead to the outside of the other. Compare that to the inside width of the rim. If the two measurements are fairly similar, you'll probably be okay. No guarantees, I know that this will only be a rough measurement. Doing this just might not tell you anything definitive.
I just did a quick search, and struck gold. You can go to mavic.com and read up on all of this, in the most technical of terms. They have a page called 'engineers talk' that has a lot of information, charts, explanations, and references to a few other suggested websites.
You're in about the same boat with the rest of us, so you'll have to make your own best decision, but if you can get them on the rims with enough air in them to ride on, you're probably gonna be okay. Ultimately, the only way to put them to the test is by actual trial. Happy trails!
that 6 mm is a big deal, i bought a 1 1/2 not nowing and it does not fit, i thought a 26in thinking all the same not not . the old tire was a tight fit coming off almost thought of cutting it off
they have to be 597mm or wont get it on the rim
if its the schwinn wheel
I have a question about the cone washers for the front axle

I recently purchased a 26x1 3/8 37-590 iso by Kenda for my old 70s Schwinn. It still does not fit! My thumbs are killing my after trying to put this thing in. What do you recommend? Thank you!
I just ordered the same tires for my 79 Schwinn. Let me know what you find out
CJ Wess I found out that I need a 37-597 ISO. I returned my first order and reordered
@@saflatty your original comment says that you bought that kind..... So I'm confused.
CJ Wess The difference is in the I SO number. I bought the same size tire but found out through another CZcams video that for my specific wheel I needed an ISO of 37-597 not 37-590. I need it to fit the old S-5 or S-6.
@@saflatty Ohhhhhh, ok. I got it. Thanks so much! Well, I guess I'll find out soon if I have the right tires
37-590 tubes will work in 37-597 tires and Schwinn s5-6 straight rims. I just put one on. They go on hard, requiring you start with enough air to fill tube in tire, then increase pressure while using soapy water to seal bead. Work tire on evenly in circular motion, increasing pressure 10 pounds at a time till full. They will seal and work.
And the point of this video was what? your selling a set of S-6 tubes, tape and wheels? Or am I missing something?
What he's pointing out is that Schwinn made a bazillion rims in a 26 x 1-3/8" stated size, but with a slight difference in actual size compared to a standard size. You can buy these tires from a number of makers, but if you have those particular Schwinn rims, you have to get the tires that are the Schwinn S-6 size, because standard size 26 x 1-3/8" tires will not fit them. Repair persons have been hassling with this situation for decades.
You don't really need a rim strip and a tube in that exact size, any 26 x 1-3/8" should be fine, but the tire itself has to be an S-6. The Sunlites he's holding are just one of several good, inexpensive choices (I chose a Sunlite as my shop's floor pump), and it's always a good idea to install new tubes and rim strips when replacing the tires.
point of story i didnt know wish i had before i bought a new tire and tried to get it on a schwinn special wheel. stretchd out of shape cant return 20 bucks shot. being a novice i thought the bike was 26 in so old tire said 26 but the new tire is different
randolph patterson i made da normal 26x1/8 fit on that rim. But it was TIGHT
Nobody tells the gd price it must change by customer I’m pretty sure I always get the higher price
Can I get them in white wall instead of Gum wall?
Or just use some muscle and get that tiny bit over the rim.
its more than atiny bit, can only get tire not even 3/4 of the way on rim
not tire will not stretch that far or at least in my case
not
@Marius011 Sorry for your anger... Smile it makes people wonder what you have been doing..If you don't like the GREAT USA ....... GET OUT

The use of proprietary parts is very unAmerican, I don't think it is something that should be celebrated or considered patriotic, it leads to dangerous vertical monopolies. Furthermore, Schwinn is no longer American; I bought some Schwinn tubes at Target today and they were made in China. Does "God bless America" really mean "God forsake America"?
We see this more all the time, it's just that we now have a global economic trade system, more so than in the past. We still manufacture a lot of things that are sold around the world. Put it this way, would you want to sell your goods in just one town, if you could sell twice as much by selling in two towns? And conversely, would you want to shop for an item in just one store, or would you want to be able to shop in two stores for what you want? I'm in my sixties, and I've seen goods marked "made in China", or "made in Taiwan" pretty much my whole life. What's so different nowadays that all of a sudden anybody's worried about it?
