I love these scenes of Spike's. He was my favorite character and a bit of a shock when I found out back then that James Marsters was in fact not British but from Texas LOL. He's so good in this role. Though I kinda wish the scene from Touched was in this. That speech truly showed when Spike becomes William again. Which is why I always preferred him for Buffy over Angel. Though I adore Angel, Angel was kind of a dick when he was human, he was Ian then. Spike, William, was a kind hearted poet who loved his mother and did his best to take care of her. #Spuffy
That was the thing that Angel really hated about Spike in the last couple of years, Spike truly earned his soul & redemption, he wanted it and fought for it. Angel was cursed with it as a punishment, he always hated Spike after that because he was jealous that William was stronger then Spike when he himself wasn't stronger then Angelus.

At the time of the reunion episode Joss Whedon said when he met James Marsters he sounded like a Texan. I think James Marsters still live in California now. Since they filmed Buffy here in SoCal. In fact the house she lived in (the front of the house not the interior) for awhile was an actual house In Torrance, Ca. My cousin lives in Torrance went there many times to meet the actors during the night shoots. She had an awful experience with Nicholas Brendon, SMH. Don't know what is going to happen to that guy.
William the bloody lives on . James nails it each every performance. He's just that good . And Spike is the most well developed character is the series. Angelus is burdened with a soul that is angel. Spike fought for his soul each and every time he appears. Hes bad boy persona makes you fall for him eternally. James as spike is absolutely phenomenal. He's just that good.
God bless Spike. He was terrific in all his iterations. I loved him even when he was evil. When Angel was Angelus, he was truly frightening. He really scared the daylights out of me. Spike was just...fun. Even when he was bad, he was lots of fun. And funny. No matter what, he always cracked me up. I truly loved Angel and Buffy together, but Spike? Spike really understood Buffy's pain, and the darkness she suffered. He helped her through a lot of crap. He even went to the ends of the earth and went through hell and willingly had his soul restored, even though it drove him to the brink of insanity and beyond, because he wanted to be someone she could respect and lean on. He actually became more human in the end than Angel, because he willingly had his soul restored; it wasn't forced on him. That was the one thing that Giles never got through his thick head, and what really pissed me off about him. Giles betrayed his Slayer in the worst possible way, and Buffy was right- she had surpassed everything he could have ever taught her, and he couldn't handle it. He was actually jealous of her faith in Spike. As much as I love Angel, and I truly do, in the end, I think Spike would have been the better match for Buffy.(and I can't believe I'm saying that after all these years, because I've always been Team Angel! Go figure!)
Well let's analyze some of this. #1 Giles wasn't Buffy's original watcher, and Buffy was never the typical Slayer. That fact alone that she bucked every trend about The Slayer is what kept her alive all this time. Giles in his way accepted that fact, until he couldn't. I can understand his hesitance with an unleashed, unchipped Spike. Before that Spike was for over a century a blood thristy demon who ripped through Europe with the rest of The Whirlwind. Compound that fact with the fact that Spike did begin killing indiscriminately when triggered by The First. Not to mention Buffy decided on her own without even so much as a phone call to remove that chip which potentially put all of them in danger.

Giles always did say that Buffy was very unorthodox in her methods, which I agree, kept her alive longer than other players, not to mention what Spike said in Season 5 - Buffy had ties to the world. Her mother, her friends, her "sister." All of them kept her grounded. I believe that was the problem with the previous Slayers, and why they never lived very long. They had no connections to the world. Kendra's watcher wouldn't let her even get an education. She was kept isolated from everyone, including her family. Robin Woods' mother, the Slayer Nikki had it a little better because she had him, but as Spike said, it wasn't really enough. She was more interested in getting the job done than in paying any kind of attention to her own son, except for teaching him Slayer techniques. Which is why she lost the fight to Spike. As for Spike himself, if you look back on his history, you can pretty much understand why he was the way he was. Not exactly certain how his father died. William and his mother Anne were landed gentry in Victorian England. William was a bit of a top, but a decent man devoted to his ailing mother, and had a crush on a young lady named Cecily, who later went on to become the vengeance demon Halfrek. William was tormented by those in his social circle and cruelly rejected by Cecily. Departing the house party he was at, he ran into Anggelus and his girls; only Drusilla took a liking to him and decided to sire him. So might have been the end of William the Bloody(he actually received that sobriquet because of his "bloody awful poetry!"), but he liked being a vampire so much he thought to sire his own mother, so she could be cured of her tuberculosis. It was ironic, that when Spike came back as a vampire, he hadn't quite lost his soul yet, like a typical vampire. So, he changed his mother, and set loose a whole host of problems, because his mother's soul disappeared immediately. The vampire left behind said some pretty vicious things to Spike, and he realized he'd made a horrible mistake. He staked the vampire, but it was Anne looking back at him at the last second, a grateful look on her face. THAT is what pushed Spike over the edge and what the First was using to it's advantage. Spike's pain, grief and guilt over his mother is what make him the reckless killer he was when he was hanging out with Angelus, and what eventually drove them apart. In a way, Spike rather had a death wish. That buried pain and guilt is also what The First took advantage of, so again, I’m gonna side with Buffy on this one. A, she's an adult. It was totally her call to make the decision and B, with the way the chip was malfunctioning there was no time for Buffy to run around and take a poll on everyone's feelings about Spike having the chip out or not. So, while I totally get where you're coming from, I still gotta stick with what I said about Giles being a d-bag for betraying Buffy like he did. He was like a surrogate father to her, and.......holy cow I've watched this show way too many times, lol! I think I need to lighten up!
@@ecclestonsangel It was her call, Riley gave her that confidence. There was actually plenty of time once the chip was removed to at least receive counsel from Giles. As we have seen in the past, Buffy is at her best when all of her allies are on the same page. She was right about Spike, about his place in the battle and his need to be fully functional. Because as we saw not all of their enemies this go around were strictly demon. Some were human as well. Giles went about it the wrong way. But I believe he had the Potentials on his mind as well. There's so much nuance to this. No one was clearly wrong or right from certain perspectives.

It was never trying to ram something down your throat. I loved Angel, too. It was a bit darker, but I was fine with that. Even 20 years later, both shows have aged really well. I hope the reboot never happens, because it will be a travesty compared to this. The reboots always are.

It was love that defanged Spike, not the chip, I know. I'm just making the point that he ended up pretty much eating his words that he said in mockery of Angel. XD

The chip didn't make him a care bear with fangs, the chip just made it so he couldn't physically hurt any living thing. Didn't mean he couldn't fight demons. Didn't mean he couldn't get inside peoples' heads, like you see him do in The Yoko Factor, just before the big showdown with Adam, when he lies to Giles, Willow, and Xander. And hell, even with the chip, he said to hell with it and dealt with the pain anyway, mostly against Buffy, but also like that moment of trying to get it through everyone's heads that Ben was Glory, he's like 'this is gonna be worth it' and slaps Xander upside the head. It was falling for Buffy that did the trick though. That's when he became as close to a team player as he would get, and that's when he started trying to be a better man, for her.

I made the mistake of buying the Anniversary Editions. They are awful, thanks to the new Widescreen version there's mutliple episodes where you can see the crew & cameras & even the actors waiting for their cue to come into the scene lol

I don’t actually think it’s the fact that Spike fought for his soul is what makes him different than Angel, it’s that even without a soul, Spike was capable of love and goodness and honour. Not perfect (far from, obviously), but capable of it. Even the monster in him loved Buffy and wanted to be good enough for her. He fell for her without a soul. The moment Angel didn’t have a soul, he turned on Buff and stopped loving her. Without a soul, Angel is only monster. Without a soul, Spike is still a man AND a monster.

Spike was always soft on the inside. As William, even has Spike with Dru. He never changed from human to ensouled vamp when it came to loving. The difference was with his love for Buffy, it was unrequited, with Dru it was technically acquired, although she never truly belonged to just him, since Dru would sleep with Angelus, which is a big reason why Spike had so much animosity towards him. I can understand his hesitance with an unleashed, unchipped Spike. Before that Spike was for over a century a blood thristy demon who ripped through Europe with the rest of The Whirlwind. Compound that fact with the fact that Spike did begin killing indiscriminately when triggered by The First. Not to mention Buffy decided on her own without even so much as a phone call to remove that chip which potentially put all of them in danger.
@@Lord_Bibulous right, he wasn't. Merrick was killed by Lothos. Giles always did say that Buffy was very unorthodox in her methods, which I agree, kept her alive longer than other players, not to mention what Spike said in Season 5 - Buffy had ties to the world. Her mother, her friends, her "sister." All of them kept her grounded. I believe that was the problem with the previous Slayers, and why they never lived very long. They had no connections to the world. Kendra's watcher wouldn't let her even get an education. She was kept isolated from everyone, including her family. Robin Woods' mother, the Slayer Nikki had it a little better because she had him, but as Spike said, it wasn't really enough. She was more interested in getting the job done than in paying any kind of attention to her own son, except for teaching him Slayer techniques. Which is why she lost the fight to Spike.
As for Spike himself, if you look back on his history, you can pretty much understand why he was the way he was. Not exactly certain how his father died. William and his mother Anne were landed gentry in Victorian England. William was a bit of a top, but a decent man devoted to his ailing mother, and had a crush on a young lady named Cecily, who later went on to become the vengeance demon Halfrek. William was tormented by those in his social circle and cruelly rejected by Cecily. Departing the house party he was at, he ran into Anggelus and his girls; only Drusilla took a liking to him and decided to sire him. So might have been the end of William the Bloody(he actually received that sobriquet because of his "bloody awful poetry!"), but he liked being a vampire so much he thought to sire his own mother, so she could be cured of her tuberculosis. It was ironic, that when Spike came back as a vampire, he hadn't quite lost his soul yet, like a typical vampire. So, he changed his mother, and set loose a whole host of problems, because his mother's soul disappeared immediately. The vampire left behind said some pretty vicious things to Spike, and he realized he'd made a horrible mistake. He staked the vampire, but it was Anne looking back at him at the last second, a grateful look on her face.
THAT is what pushed Spike over the edge and what the First was using to it's advantage. Spike's pain, grief and guilt over his mother is what make him the reckless killer he was when he was hanging out with Angelus, and what eventually drove them apart. In a way, Spike rather had a death wish. That buried pain and guilt is also what The First took advantage of, so again, I’m gonna side with Buffy on this one. A, she's an adult. It was totally her call to make the decision and B, with the way the chip was malfunctioning there was no time for Buffy to run around and take a poll on everyone's feelings about Spike having the chip out or not. So, while I totally get where you're coming from, I still gotta stick with what I said about Giles being a d-bag for betraying Buffy like he did. He was like a surrogate father to her, and.......holy cow I've watched this show way too many times, lol! I think I need to lighten up!
@@ecclestonsangel It was her call, Riley gave her that confidence. There was actually plenty of time once the chip was removed to at least receive counsel from Giles. As we have seen in the past, Buffy is at her best when all of her allies are on the same page. She was right about Spike, about his place in the battle and his need to be fully functional. Because as we saw not all of their enemies this go around were strictly demon. Some were human as well. Giles went about it the wrong way. But I believe he had the Potentials on his mind as well. There's so much nuance to this. No one was clearly wrong or right from certain perspectives.
@@Lord_Bibulous yes, I will agree with you there. It was such a good show. That's why I keep watching it over and over. And it was never preachy. It was never trying to ram something down your throat. I loved Angel, too. It was a bit darker, but I was fine with that. Even 20 years later, both shows have aged really well. I hope the reboot never happens, because it will be a travesty compared to this. The reboots always are.
@@Lord_Bibulous and they never reconciled that. Even when Giles was hanging around faith while Buffy and her Slayer army were off and about til Twilight happened. Closes to any reconciliation was when he was resurrected and the mess was all forgotten

@Jaime Bee No no, I know Spike would have changed out of love for Buffy with or without the chip, I'm fully aware - not sure how I could not be aware of that, Spike loved Buffy in ways we all DREAM of being loved, love that pure is undeniable and I have no idea how anyone in the world could believe in anything but Spuffy. It was love that defanged Spike, not the chip, I know. I'm just making the point that he ended up pretty much eating his words that he said in mockery of Angel. XD

The chip didn't make him a care bear with fangs, the chip just made it so he couldn't physically hurt any living thing. Didn't mean he couldn't fight demons. Didn't mean he couldn't get inside peoples' heads, like you see him do in The Yoko Factor, just before the big showdown with Adam, when he lies to Giles, Willow, and Xander. And hell, even with the chip, he said to hell with it and dealt with the pain anyway, mostly against Buffy, but also like that moment of trying to get it through everyone's heads that Ben was Glory, he's like 'this is gonna be worth it' and slaps Xander upside the head.
It was falling for Buffy that did the trick though. That's when he became as close to a team player as he would get, and that's when he started trying to be a better man, for her.

I made the mistake of buying the Anniversary Editions. They are awful, thanks to the new Widescreen version there's mutliple episodes where you can see the crew & cameras & even the actors waiting for their cue to come into the scene lol

Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt did a great job with Buffy and Angel.
I don’t actually think it’s the fact that Spike fought for his soul is what makes him different than Angel, it’s that even without a soul, Spike was capable of love and goodness and honour. Not perfect (far from, obviously), but capable of it. Even the monster in him loved Buffy and wanted to be good enough for her. He fell for her without a soul. The moment Angel didn’t have a soul, he turned on Buff and stopped loving her. Without a soul, Angel is only monster. Without a soul, Spike is still a man AND a monster.
Well, it may have only been one brief second, but at least you didn't totally omit Randy Giles.

Spike was always soft on the inside. As William, even has Spike with Dru. He never changed from human to ensouled vamp when it came to loving. The difference was with his love for Buffy, it was unrequited, with Dru it was technically acquired, although she never truly belonged to just him, since Dru would sleep with Angelus, which is a big reason why Spike had so much animosity towards him. That was the reason he fell in love with Buffy before he even knew it, cause he went to Buffy to team up with her and stop Angelus, cause Angelus stole Drew from Spike yet again, He has always been the sentimental guy,
