I don’t actually think it’s the fact that Spike fought for his soul is what makes him different than Angel, it’s that even without a soul, Spike was capable of love and goodness and honour. Not perfect (far from, obviously), but capable of it. Even the monster in him loved Buffy and wanted to be good enough for her. He fell for her without a soul. The moment Angel didn’t have a soul, he turned on Buff and stopped loving her. Without a soul, Angel is only monster. Without a soul, Spike is still a man AND a monster.
Spike loved Buffy without a soul. I hated angel & never understood how angel was "the greatest love story written" told by the writer. THIS was the greatest ( in this show) love story written. By far.
of course .. Angel was a narcissist, selfish, who said he was good for having a soul ... he fled like a coward ... The typical protective male ... but as he was tormented he needed Buffy to listen to him all the time, and twice in when it appeared, when Buffy was rebuilding her life ... very toxic

It was one of the most brutal most difficult endings to a series ever. Also, Spike was a hopeless romantic he was a poet! Angel was a narcissist as you said, not interesting to me at all.
William the bloody lives on . James nails it each every performance. He's just that good . And Spike is the most well developed character is the series. Angelus is burdened with a soul that is angel. Spike fought for his soul each and every time he appears. Hes bad boy persona makes you fall for him eternally. James as spike is absolutely phenomenal. He's just that good.
CONTEXT: 10:30 SPIKE just realize that he can punch all kinds of demons and vampires in the face AFTER THINKING HE COULDNT EVER HURT SOMEONE AGAIN (because of the chip in the brain) so he was really exited
Spike was always soft on the inside. As William, even has Spike with Dru. He never changed from human to ensouled vamp when it came to loving. The difference was with his love for Buffy, it was unrequited, with Dru it was technically acquired, although she never truly belonged to just him, since Dru would sleep with Angelus, which is a big reason why Spike had so much animosity towards him. That was the reason he fell in love with Buffy before he even knew it, cause he went to Buffy to team up with her and stop Angelus, cause Angelus stole Drew from Spike yet again, He has always been the sentimental guy,
writers made kind of a big boo-boo in regards to the crypt scene between Spike & Buffy-Bot... Spike knows Buffy's scent and knows it well. _how or why_ her pretending to be the Buffy-Bot tricked him is beyond me
I guess some kind of reason could be thought up. Perhaps Glory busted up his nose so bad that he couldn't breathe through it? Or maybe he had already made the buffy bot smell like real Buffy for the full fantasy (he did steal some of her clothes, for instance).
Can we all appreciate that Angel's original name is Liam, aka Irish version of William, and Spike's original name is William. They're both William. BTVS made both of it's main lead romantic male roles named William.
I've loved Spike from the first second he appeared on the show. His character development was absolutely incredible and so well acted by James.
