So many people missed the point of this video. She never said there was anything wrong with the anime style in itself, She was talking about why even though the proportions and other stuff was unrealistic it is still extremely appealing to people. And then explains all the things that people who draw anime use such as references and detail simplicity.

I think the most amazing thing about art is that it doesn't have to be realistic at all, and the worst mistake artists do is to judge each other (and ourselves) way too harshly. There's a freedom to make whatever we want whether it makes sense or not, and how we do it shouldn't be seen as mistakes. You can improve your own art style just the way you want to, not how other artists would like you to.

sorry am i legit the only fucker that understands the missing line in the middle of lips? It's like when you add weight to your lines when drawing. The lack of line is supposed to show how close together the lips are at that point of the mouth.
No I understand it too. People don't understand that the line of the mouth isn't the lips. The lips are implied around the line. The line is just the edge of both lips being together
This is why it always looks wrong when someone just draws the two lines with no idea what it's actually symbolizing. They're not implying the volume or form, they're just scratching two lines on and hoping it looks right. An experience artist thinks about the form surrounding the line and implies form with line weight.
Anime characters usually have noses implied by super subtle shading or a slight curve of a line and it's really really subtle but it makes such a huge difference compared to just putting a dot wherever the heck you want it
But its not like the crease gets any thinner the closer your lips are

What have ye become? You'll never find the light to remove the darkness in your unsparked body. You weeb abominations of the archons, no star shall guide you in the clearest of nights, no wind will blow your sail even in the most intense of gales. You and your archonic weeaboo kinds lack Synesis to appreciate the light of the world of the Aeons. You are far away, far away from the light. Ask yourself, ''What have I become?'', ''Will I ever find my place in the sun?'', ''Will I ever find Jerusalem?''. Weeaboos are far away from the light, their mind shrouded with instinctive darkness of the material realm dominated by the archetype of the ego. Otakus will never hold anything dear to their true egotistical selfish wrathful sarkic indignation. Unlike a leaf on the wind, a weeaboo will never land on their place on the sun. Sarkics draining the light of Sophia bringing upon the archons. You shackle the Elpis brought upon by aeons from the tree of life. You drain the pneuma upon the ethos of the Pleroma. Would the tide of change go in favor to the power of the archons? The weeb flourishes free in the modern age with no regards to the pneuma of the aeons. The weeaboo is free to spread their dominion upon the pneumatics. The Pleroma holds against the horde of hylics unleashed upon by androgynous archons forces under the Demiurge. The weeaboo is a seducer like an archon to normalize savagery of the flesh, the lowest of the mind, the instinctive level, the Sarkic weebs. The sarkic abomination of the Demiurge. What wrath shall thee unsleash upon the material world? Weeaboo abomination subjugation of the instinct upon the divine intellect. The Sagrada Familia is an epitome of the power of the divine intellect gifted by the aeons. You and your weeb kinds are unknowingly shrouding the gift of the divine intellect in humanity by spreading lies made by the archons to which you conceive to your marriage with the flesh. You are at the far end of the tether and when your thoughts won't fit together you'll need to deprogram your mind. It's like seeing a new day. Just what you need to make you nearer to the light. Ekklesiastikos Ainos pneuma rejuvenated by the star dust beyond the Material realm. You are a gross group of fetishists of young people. You have made a gross cultural materialist perversion of Gaia's innocents. A core part of the consumption crisis that weeaboos exploit is the perceived lustfulness thought by weebs in children. This subjugation of archonic weebs over innocents that can't express to adults their thoughts is a way for weebs to take the image of children and replace them to become one with the Demiurge. The profound blocking of genetic diversity done by weebs to the nature of the innocence of children is to ensure that weebs destroy the age of consent and weebs would now completely take the image of Gaia's children and fulfill their sarkic desires. The unprincipled exception of archonic transcription to tolerate a hierarchy of The Loyal Society of the Flesh. The metabrain of the archonic weeaboos pervades society to enshroud the inherited light through metagenesis locking human psyche that would guarantee reign of the Egotistical self that the Shadow hold inside our repressed self that reach back to the realm of our animal ancestors. The weeaboo guarantees such a transformation to occur and continue the rule of the Demiurge to block the light from reaching the Pleroma.

I just came here to tell you, these aren’t mistakes. This is simply a style :)!! Everyone knows that the average amount of people don’t have two mouths or a gap between the mouth we know that the mouth is placed in the front of the face not what ever side you see the side profile on it’s just a cartoon, good bye :DD
Yeah like peppa pig 💀💀💀💀💀
Finally someone said it
Especially when author of video herself draws character which have cheeks lower than mouth or on other nose higher than eyes, bruh
real mistake that banana with duct tape are art
Indeed Indeed, like it wasn't specified in the vid that it's a style choice, not mistakes. Heck those are cartoons
as an anime fan, i don't really care about proportion accurate.. as long as they look good in my eyes.
still much respect to those who give attention to that.
this is just my very own opinion, but I think there's nothing wrong with anime styles, and I think there's nothing to be ashamed for it. That is why it's called ANIME, and that is why there is something called ART STYLES. You don't need to always bother following rules, and you don't need to follow others. What will happen if we just ended up having the same style.
Where is art in that?
I agree with you 1000% !!
Exactly, i think so too

Finally Someone talks how being an artist is fun and Art is definition of freedom. Because when someone puts limits that Art needs to be certain way it’s is a pressure and and leads to procrastinating not creating:) especially who is a beginner needs to relax and follow Koolen’s advice. Take it easy!
I love kooleen’s sense of humor, and she’s offically my art teacher whether she likes it or not :DD

Thank you for the tips! I have been struggling on clip studio but atleast I learned some tips on art! I don't usually search tutorials cause I know i'll never learn off tutorials but these tips are excellent!
Girl, you have a incredible sense of humorI love it!!!I enjoy your videos
honestly this all just depends on the artstyle
for example the smudge tool is really helpful in realism and semi-realism, you'll only get so far by blending with colours. If you're drawing anime STAY AWAY FROM THE AIRBRUSH TOOL the only thing you can use it for is the blush and a little gradient DON'T USE IT FOR SHADING
Don't use airbrush for shading
unless you know how to. A lot of beginners go hams on airbrush and do every single shades with airbrush, which looks meh.
However, you can use airbrush for things that are soft or things that are fading away from light or distant from light source. Remember, a good rule of thumb is Cast shadows (i.e., shadows that are cast by objects blocking light like nose casting shadows over cheek, face casting shadow under neck, etc..) are sharp edged. Form shadows (i.e., shadows made from forms turning away or soft or round, etc..) are soft. If the form is somewhat turning away abruptly but soft too (like face turning from front to side plane or upper cheek turning to lower cheek bone, etc..) receive lost or fuzzy edges.
It depends on style too, in cel shading they combine both cast and form shadows as sharp edged. Realism on the other hand, uses soft shadows. Semi-realism or stylized art uses mix of both like mentioned above. Draw what you love and continue enjoying the process, you'll grow to find *your* process, techniques, style, etc.., 👍
Sorry for the long reply, just wanted to put this out there if someone needs it! ✌️
Many Japanese artist (light novel illustrators) use soft for shading, its all about how you use it
Anime artstyle isn't only limited to cell shading, you can use airbrush/soft edged tools for many things in anime artstyles
u can use the airbrush tool sometimes
@@almondcharm1818 for gradients or for the base layer of soft shading. not for the shading itself

These are not mistakes, but codes created to do low budget 2D animation with a good render and these have been used for 70+ years. However, they can look terrible if you use them whithout understanding how they work.
I really like the casual way you talk it just makes me understand more and learned more
4:08 why you gotta expose me like that? 😟
Some tips from personal experience
Don't be afraid to use sharp edges in shading, the more shiny something is the sharper the edge of the shading should be
Colours reflect off of other things, like if you're wearing a blue shirt the part of your skin will reflect some of the blue as well
Stuff irl has texture so don't be afraid to make things "not smooth" because stuff isn't supposed to be that smooth anyway
Also about anime artstyles:
the reason the colour palettes may be muted is so they can use the same colour for different lighting situations and save on animation budget and so it just matches with other stuff.
Side mouth is also because of saving budget, because it means they can just use the same picture of the face and draw the mouth on a separate animation cel so they only need to move the mouth not redraw the whole face
Cel shading is used because it is easier to make animation consistent when you don't have to worry about how stuff blends together
Anime eyes are massive because eyes are expressive so they can show more emotion
3:34,she just drew bakugo (to me it look like him)

What you said is basically flipping the canvas on digital, which is REALLY good advice.
When you mentioned "don't use blur or smudge for blending" that gave me nostalgia when I tried drawing as a kid

@@jxsmine.9284 yes but still.
The reason why the mouth is like that in the side profile is because it's simply faster to animate as compared to a proper mouth. Animation is a time consuming job which doesn't even pay well.

“Don’t use anime screenshots for colors”.
Looks at the two Zero Two pictures, left with actual shading and right with anime screenshot colors.
Leaning towards the the right.
You say that, but honestly it looks really good and I like it more than the left picture. To me at least.
See? that's what a personal preference is smh
I agree, right looks more vibrant and colourful and therefore more appealing. Left looks a little muddy and not Zero Two enough.
Oh my goodness the anime drawing looks so good!! Imagine you drawing anime!! And I agree... Anime shading is a bit dull, I tend to add more shades when fixing it XD
I think anime studios put dull colours in their animation to decrease costs by simplifying each frame.
Idk though, i'm just an animation enthusiast.
Cool video! I like when artists say things I have seen other artists say over the years. Assuming you came to your own conclusions, that strengthens what has been said over the years.
Sometimes I use the smudge tool it muddies the colors somehow. I love how it became the new airbrush when it comes to newbies relying on certain things to make it more “realistic”
Fancy seeing you here!! (ノ≧∇≦)ノ ミ ┻━┻
It’s not a new tool? I’ve imagine many beginner artist have used it along the airbrush tool.
Another prominent source of advice I’ve learned over the years. Never take individual artist especially from the internet word as gospel.
Don’t blindly follow a single artist into the woods. It’s the quickest way to grow frustrated with your own art. And suffer from burnout.
Oh my god, I've always had so much trouble with lips, you're a life saver!

People have copyrighted colors, so in the *right context* you could get sued for using a color.
For example Coca Cola red or Barbie pink
Only if you make a soft drink with coca cola red or a doll with barbie pink

sorry if I'm a pain in the ass but those are not mistakes but just drawing styles .. for example how you draw your lips (as you show at the second 0:18 of the video) some don't like it but you do ... THEY ARE STYLES OF DRAWING WITHOUT SAYING: "BUT THERE ARE MISTAKES, DON'T DRAW THIS IS BLA BLA BLA". THEY ARE DESIGN STYLES!

WHY NO ONE DIDN'T THINK ABOUT THIS BEFORE
The way Kooleen teaches art is how I want art teachers to be 😭
El anime es surrealista en si mismo, dejame ser 🥲. Cada uno tiene su estilo😭
Gotta disagree on the blur and smudge tool. Any tool is a great asset so long as you know how to use it properly.
Blur or smudge tool is what I often use to shape my shadows and lights, pushing colors where I want them to go without making things look too sharp in areas I don't want any sharpness. It also depends on where I'm using it. I tend to use it on smaller areas where as I use the air brush on larger spots.
For example, I use the smudge and blur tool on small details of the face or in the hair. Areas like creases of the skin, highlights of the eyes and around the eyes.
The tool is to really just shape what's already there while airbrush just adds on to it.
true! but what i wanted to point out was the fact that many beginners only use the blur tool because they don't know what tool to use-but it's a great asset if people know how to use it properly
this! I get the intent is that for beginners they tend to overuse blur/smudge tools, but how you use your tools is 1000% more important than what kinds of tools. It's like how you can have all these fancy art pencils and pens but a pro can do amazing things with just regular ballpoint. Even if you get "nicer" tools if you don't feel comfortable using it it won't work out. Find what works for you
