- "“How did I get over being poor? I got a job as a sports announcer and it led to everything else.“ - Ronald Reagan, as told to Bill Moyers on April 30, 1979.
Originally aired on WNET's Bill Moyers Journal on PBS
We loved hearing Ronald Reagan open up about his vision for America in the months before he'd even announced he was running again for President. He welcomed Moyers to his ranch in California and we share some gems from the conversation including a story about oatmeal meat and his humble upbringing, his roots in the Democratic party, his keys to getting out of poverty, and what truly separates America from the rest of the world. Enjoy.

Love him or hate him, you gotta admit Reagan's got a really nice voice.
Well... he's definitely one of the most charismatic Presidents of all time. The polar opposite of Trump.
Mister Sarajevo How is that the opposite of Trump? Trump’s charismatic, just not if it’s your job to cry on tv over innocuous statements taken out of context.
Not really. His intellect is poor & he doesn't have any type of aura where you would want to be around him.
Mister Sarajevo I think he swings so far in the opposite direction it becomes charismatic. A hopeful optimist might be fooled once but after decades of unfulfilled promises, seedy deals and unethical behavior being uncovered, the people become desensitized to the typical politically correct culture, because we know it’s gilded; the people pretending to suddenly care about decency are the most indecent people on the planet.
Trump’s charisma, if he has any, comes from being so contrary to what has become status quo that it feels relatable. In the campaign he basically said whatever he felt like, or at least, that’s the impression that comes across.
Mister Sarajevo Was Winston Churchill charismatic? And there you go. Different strokes, but all their main points at their core are a common sense tough grit attitude. I can guarantee you would see a harder side of Reagan if he was leading today and just looked around at the state of the country.
Regan: I got a small loan of a can of meat and oatmeal.

The American Dream was never about being a Millionaire. It was about being able to go from nothing to something. Being able to own a house and support a family. The belief getting a job would be all you needed to get out of the slums, that was definitely true once. But that dream is fading more and more every year. People can work 2 full time jobs and still barely feed their families. Now two people in a relationship have to both work full time jobs to bring in the same wages just the husband was bringing in the 1950s. In the end though Reagan was right about something though, this country has lost its warmth. People mock the working class as lazy because they're poor, they think the system works because they've never had to climb up from the bottom. I may not agree with Reagan on much, but it least the man had a sense of decency.
Corrupted Archangel -I agree; consequently Reagan was partly responsible for destroying the “American Dream” you describe of getting a good job that pays a living wage.

How? People are poorer and as depressed as ever. The middle and lower classes still haven't recovered from the recession. It's only good for the 11%.

I think he means stop living with the mindset that you will always be helpless and poor, because if you believe that, then it will always be true. Yes, not everyone in this world will succeed, but you don't lose until you stop chasing that success.
Bullshit. The idea that being poor is a mindset asserts the notion that you need to take things from others in order to be successful. It's the same social Darwinism clap trap. Reagan always had an optimism in his speaking. Much needed today.
that's the best way to describe why he was the way he was. the optimistic trickledown idea, and that the best interests of the people are sought after by people looking to only make profit off them.
I think we need more realism when that sort of optimistic belief can doom people that aren’t accounted for by someone’s or another’s perspective.
@@MrIronJustice The converse is true too. There cannot be demand if the consumer is broke. Look at what the gutting of the welfare state did! An america where more than half of americans go broke if they suddenly gain unforseen medical expenses. This is what caused the soviet economy decline, a whole lotta money but literally nothing to purchase with it. Rich people save their money and the working and middle class tend to spend their money, decreasing taxes only redistributed income to the rich and reagan's lax regulatory environment led to consoldation and lack of competition which is what really drives innovation.

It's just disappointing for me to see most people in the comments arguing politics. I feel like that's not what this series is about. It's about looking back at the words of people who held great power and/or influence, and also maybe just thinking deeply about a moment in time. I think that's what the music and atmosphere of this show tries to evoke, too. Like, this man is dead now but he was once President of the United States, one of the most influential countries on Earth. That alone is pretty amazing. Now I'm not gonna say what I thought about the guy, because frankly that doesn't _matter_. I will say that it was fascinating to listen to him and to try to understand the mind of an important figure in history (note: important doesn't mean good OR bad). It seems to me that most people _want_ to argue though, even if you try to extend an olive branch and focus on what we have in common, people will smack it away just to be contentious--people of all political and ideological leanings, mind you.
Please don't argue in the responses to this. There's a whole comment section for that. You could say something thoughtful though or just stop by to say 'hi'. =)
I see things the same way. Hi there. Personally, I think Reagan struck a chord with Americans because he was an optimist at the right time. He saw a vision of 1980s America that was content and at peace. He was a gentle speaker, who made clean jokes, and refrained from cursing. It's sad how relevant the question was about seeing the other side of America. Reagan and his followers let homophobia get in the way of helping the poor soles with aids, wheras Jesus himself would have healed them in person.
"It's disappointing for me to see people arguing politics in a video about a political figure"
Hi. It's over a year later but I do want to say that to hear an unbiased opinion, focusing on the experience and thought more than a desire to feel correct in your own convictions is very refreshing, and I'm happy to have found this comment.
Since the government takes 33% of the money I work for, they have a responsibility to spend it on infrastructure like schools, roads, forests, public health, etc not on overpriced military programs and expensive lunches, trips, etc under the pretense that decisions that affect my life are better handled over golf at a place I can't afford partly because I pay soo fucking much in taxes, insurance, and healthcare!
100%!!!
Most of your taxes in the healthcare sector go to managing the insurance industry, hence why the US _technically_ spends so much per person yet still has dog shit coverage. Ideally, we should dissolve the entire industry and spend that money directly on the people themselves
damn, since when did they manage to take such a large slice of your pie, 33%? how high is your income and do you live in work in several different states and commute to and from, and also do you *ahem* live in either the Northeast, California, or Illinois? that may somewhat explain a third of your income being taken.

In authoritarian nations (and workplaces), you don't have freedom to excel. Reagan was right about that as well.
That's soviet style authoritarianism and old school thinking. Now authoritarian regimes have adopted capitalism to their ends. See china and its economic boom. Its tech sector is now one of the most powerful in the world and is comparable to sillicon valley in some aspects. However, the main fault with authoritarian governments is that they can make arbitrary rulings and regulations on businesses and wipe out savings without pushback from private groups and thats why authoritarianism isn't the best when it comes to economic growth
Yeah like Argentina, where 30k people were disappeared by the fascist state around that time for the crime of having differing political ideas. Or in Chile where the government was giving power to the people and helping folks out of poverty until reactionary terrorists blew up the presidential palace and took over the nation, stopping them from reaching excellence.
Regan caused that. He funded them both. This guy is tricking you.
Man, Ronald Reagan was a seriously charming idealist. Shame that he had too little faith in regulation in economics, though. His platform's alright in moderation since all rules can be improved when analyzed critically, but you don't save a sick tree by chopping it down, nor do you get rid of a tumor using a chainsaw.
I guess that's a problem with both parties: they go for the pie in the sky because idealism is pretty and amazing, but it can fall apart fast if not tempered with realism.
The sad thing is that the only thing that people will listen to is idealism, if politicians talked about what worked more than what sounds nice we would get a lot farther in society.
Reagan didn't de-regulate murder or theft, he de-regulated the kinds of restrictions lobbies fight for to create corporate privilege. I don't agree with all he did or thought, but de-regulation is key to have a fair and healthy economy.

The economy of the Regan era was great and I legitimately feel like he did everything in his power to help Americans prosper but i feel like a combination of a corruption of his philosophies for the sake of corporate greed and an overly strict adherence to his ideals has lead to a gradual downward trend of the American standard of living. Wages are statistically lower now than they were under Regan and the economy is overall worse and I don't think Regan would appreciate his ideas being used in a way that doesn't promote prosperity like they did in the 80s
IGNORANCE IS NEGLIGIBLE BLISS STUPID
"Wages are statistically lower now than they were under Regan and the economy is overall worse"
"Economy" is traditionally measured by gross domestic product (GDP) of a nation, which has grown tremendously in nearly all nations since the 1980s and has grown very much also in the USA. So the overall "economy" of USA is way better.
I think what you're meaning to say is that the working people (the creators of wealth) get a much smaller percentage of economic productivity than the investors & owners of capital (the funders of new corporations). And I agree, that trend is morally wrong and should be reversed.

Reagan didn't do that. College costs started going up when easy student loans were introduced. The colleges no longer had to charge what people could spend, but what they could borrow. Ditch student loans as a thing and I guarantee colleges would cut tuition fees by a sizeable chunk. They can't make money if no one's willing to give it to them.

Unfortunately, there are Americans today who were born without the benefit of being a white God-fearing Republican.
props to pbs not making this a Reagen hit piece.
even though I disagree with half of the stuff he's saying, he's still very respectful and such
so much wisdom. you know i never thought materialism was good, until reagan hawked the aluminum stein handle

Ronald Reagan personally shat on my cereal this morning so I'm gonna make a comment that nobody asked for on this CZcams video

lol you thought
Too bad you weren't eating oatmeal
"Say Ronald Reagan, what the fuck are you doing in my house? Get out of here right now, and don't you ever come back over here again! If you come back this way, I will shoulder the weapon and shoot the living shit out of you!"
-Wesley Willis, "I Can't Drive"
We miss you, Ronnie
Sadly he would be considered almost liberal in today's standards. Last true conservative.
Buttery Skater he would’ve been conservative today also since a lot of conservatives agree with his policies
joseaca he probably wouldn’t be considered that liberal. Spoke against abortion heavily, supported gigantic tax decreases, cut down on welfare, spoke more against illegal immigration than other politicians , etc. I wouldn’t really consider him that liberal, he certainly did do liberal things but for the most part, I’d consider him conservative
@@graynick7586 against illegal immigration? the guy who gives amnesty?
Reagan is basically the founder of the Republican party today in some ways he was the first non-conservative Republican president, well at least socially, which is where it mattered
@@yahbol846 Most self-proclaimed conservatives are quite libertarian, which is near where I sit. Freedom, autonomy, both are very libertarian-right ideas.
Reagan for life
Man I love Reagan
I wish it was so easy to simply "not be poor", Mr. Reagan or I would do it.
I love the videos that I don't agree with. It's fascinating to see other perspectives that aren't my own. 😌
Pogie Joe it is easy being rich. It is all about your believe system.
Right? Here's the thing---I was reading a Buster Keaton autobio where back back back in the day---RR's day, also---it was so much easier to get employment. BK's friend told him about an opening for a singer in a vaudeville type act. He walked in, the boss was eating lunch and didn't even look up from his plate. He says to BK, "Can you sing?" BK says he could. The boss told him to be in the theater ready to work the next day. I've been unemployed for 10 months, and I've found that employers are not so willing to train anymore---they want *exact* experience or it's on to the next candidate. Even having years of experience in the same field is not doing people any good, if you don't have the detailed exact knowledge they want. Things back in RR's day, the way they hired and promoted, well, it's not anywhere near that anymore. We've shot ourselves in the foot.
The problem keeping down the poor today, just as Reagen would say, is the government. A free market with minimal limitations was what Reagen used to lift up so many out of poverty and into the new middle class. With so many limitations from government, (ie. child labor laws, minimal wage) it's hard for people to make something of themselves or get in to a decent position with a family.
Just don't read his supporters comments. To stress inducing.
when reagan still limited the government the Corporate military industry took over.....
Reagan was at alright guy. He should Ihave been tougher on immigration and relaxed on gun restrictions but compared to many of the other presidents he was a saint.
Even though some of his policies had the reverse effect he intended, i think he gets a bad rep of being the ultimate evil, surely the blame should lay on the government and the buisnesses at the time not soley on him, and yes compared to recent presidents he is a saint
He was literally a drug dealer
Spot on, immigration is one of the only things that matter. curb it all
@@cossaizy6309 I agreed
He let a chunk of the population die and discouraged his staff from even discussing aids.
Oh, the irony of Ronald Reagan fondly remembering a time in America when status symbols didn’t exist...
What?
He mastered the art of saying so much without saying anything at all 4:06, he seems like he was a really out of touch guy
Yeah I dont know much about him, but those last 35 seconds didnt really speak light, "Get over it and get a job" isn't great advice for people who literally can't.
@@user-gt6oh5jx6l its a very common thing boomers say to milenials and Gen z. Back in their day they could get a factory job after high school and make a ton of cash. Now even jobs after a college degree make pennies
While I disagree with him politically, I like how this video was put together. It shows his thought process even though I think it was dangerously delusional. The opportunities that were available to him despite being poor are not opportunities available to everyone. People have to appreciate how damn lucky they can be, and not falsely attribute it to their own gumption, and claim a lack of character to those whom struggle to find their own fortunate circumstance.
I'm confused as to how Reagen was dillusional. He believed the sole factor that kept poor people in the gutter was the government. He believed that those who were truly willing to claw their way out of poverty would do so in the free market. The Reagen Revolution brought upon economic growth that would persist through the rest of the 20th century.
I find that most people who subscribe to this line of thinking are just pissed off that they can't immediately attain vast wealth, as opposed to having actual problems with the idea of hard work and skill translating into success in business. Some even fail to understand that they are not as valuable as Bill Gates, believe it or not. ಠ_ಠ
It's not about being poor or ignorant themselves; since nearly everyone experiences those states of life and mind. But it's about the willingness to learn or the willingness to seek economic prosperity. Slaves hundreds of years ago were forced to live a horrid lifestyle anywhere from months to decades; such as Fredrick douglass who didn't escape bondage and become truly educated until his mid 30's. People have their peaks at different times in life. It's the people that never cared to try hard enough and now that they are in their 40's-70's they figure what's the point. So with that particular line of thinking, anyone born into the ghetto are just automatically horrible people?
The problem is -- we don't have an America that Reagan was championing. Everything is subsidized, inflated -- which only makes things tremendously more expensive; i.e. college education.
Snow Kestrel When will a president fix anything? I'm still waiting on Obama to help education....oh never mind too busy to deal with that next president!
I really liked his final message.
Regan was the beginning of the end for the us financial system
What a cool dude
One of the most popular, best, well spoken, sophisticated, classy presidents we have ever had.
Still waiting for the trickling down part.
Edit: For all the Reaganoids defending trickle down economics: go trickle down some bltches. I really don't care.
They'll find any excuse to help the richest ones, often telling everyone it will profit us all.
Best way to put it to you:
Trump= Pro wealthy----> Tax cuts for corporations
Obama Bush and Reagan= Pro Middle Class----> Tax Breaks and Neo Liberal Policies(Which other than Reaganomics are surprisingly helpful)
Biden and FDR= Pro poor people and people in debt----> A million and one agencies, stimulus checks, social security and student loan forgiveness
All of these helped America so just decide for yourself which is best.

i could listen to that man talk on and on
I love these videos. Good Job.
3:38 I imagined that clip of Biden yelling "Soda!" 🤣
Reagan has so many good quotes
Does anyone remember the episode of aqua teen hunger force where meatwad eats frylock's shrunken micro chip and it re-expands inside him? That's what Reagan looks like.
America is about work hard/smart, play hard. For example I live in Canada its nice here but we get put into tax brackets and also get hit with a luxury tax. That’s why many doctors, entrepreneurs and business owners that strive to be their best move to America from all over the world. The problem is most people lost that mindset, most of us just want to play hard without working hard/smart and that’s what leads to poverty and no meaning for life. What’s amazing about America is that if you are born with a gift or no gift you can still work hard/smart and get your moneys worth. Where I live I can’t say the same. Imagine if individuals like Stan Lee or Steve Jobs grew up in communist Russia? We wouldn’t have marvel or Apple we know of today imo.
Hehe, some civil conversation in the comments section, as usual.
As much as I disagree with him, the nuance of this interview does explain his positions on things.
What a legend

29.9% of the population-or 93.6 million-live close to poverty-2020
@Bret 1959 the Republican party needs to move away from Reaganomics and to more fiscally left policies like Trump enacted
@Bret 1959 that sounds nice, it's nice that normal people were allowed to have a collective voice. As a young conservative, I see that alot of middle class Republican voters are going more toward fiscally-liberal (unions and programs) and focusing on social-conservatism. I live in the everyday American small town, the type that has been hollowed out in recent decades. Although I never knew the America that previous generations grew up with, I always felt like something was missing. Hopefully younger people can realize that this tornado of hyper capitalism mixed with cheap labor from immigration is hollowing out the country
@Bret 1959 Yeah, and the Mob and the Reds fucked the unions up.
I appreciate this so much, thank you!
He was the president when I was a kid. Listen to him ..then listen to the president of Feb 2019. :-0
That was very insightful. It lets you know the context of his character and how he became who he was at that time
One of the first things Reagan did when he came in the White House was, 1, take down the solar panels that Jimmy Carter installed and 2, replace the FDA director. The replacement approved the use of Aspartame.
www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/athome/aspartame
aspartame has not been proven to be a dangerous substance. there's a lot of misinformation that surrounds it. Without commenting on Reagan's politics, I just want to clear the air on aspartame.
I had hung over symptoms, allergies I never had before in my life and a recurring deep, bronchial cough caused by my sinuses dripping down my throat. They all stopped almost immediately when I gave up Diet Coke. There are too many people reporting the same thing to be my imagination. The cause of gulf war syndrome is most likely aspartame poisoning since they fed bottled crystal light to the troops in the first gulf war and that was full of aspartame.
I'm just saying the majority of clinical research (from various organizations) have shown that it is not particularly harmful. Soda in general is just a poor beverage that people should consume sparingly, if at all. Doesn't Diet Coke also contain things like Phenylalanine? That substance has been proven to exhibit negative affects on certain groups of people(which is why diet beverages must warn consumers about it) whereas aspartame has not.
In terms of the gulf war syndrome, I don't know much about that. But, just considering the fact that a bunch of people are in a completely foreign environment and under a bunch of stress (in the modern data focused era which would collect more information on incidents of illness), I think there are too many other variables that could be causing/contributing to sickness. It would be silly to pin it all on aspartame.
I'm not really trying to debate you, but here's just a different point of view. If it doesn't make you re-consider, that's fine. Hope you have a good (aspartame free) day!
It tastes horrible anyway. If you're going to drink something like coke, you should limit yourself to a small amount, and then the sugar won't be so bad anyway.
Life is too short to love and I don't understand How and Why people find time to Hate or Quarrel
I really want the soda thing. Really
What about when there's no jobs available lmao the interviewer was probably about to say that when he got cut off
Reagan didn't have any answers for coming out of poverty. Only that you must have some kind of individual genius.
If you have a home mortgage, what's your interest rate? When Reagan took office, the Prime Interest Rate was over 20%! Now calculate what your monthly mortgage payment would be if your own interest rate was that high. In 4 years he brought it down to 6% and it continued falling. That's where the geyser of money came from that fueled the roaring 80's and 90's. Thank you Ronald Reagan.
Giving credit to the wrong person I see.
...Leftist?
Its nice, at least to see how/why Ronald Reagan changed so much. Atleast now, i understand him a tad more...
Where can I watch the full interview???
I am so tired of living where there is no common courtesy anymore. Those with the small four letter vocabularies do not sound smart. Is there any reason why we can't appreciate someone for the good things they have done and the good things they represent even if we didn't like them personally? All of this heat sounds like who is on the playground, lots of hot air and really no point. What are the things I appreciate about the Reagan was the ways they related to people and represented this country and themselves. They did know the meaning of hard work but they also understood that they were blessed.
Framing human life as a matter of more-or-less consumption is flawed.
Maybe. But there is virtually no human that has ever existed that does NOT consume. Bear in mind the necessity of what he's talking about when it comes to human innovation; individuals creating products that they can sell to others. Without those people, invention would slow to a crawl, and the government couldn't charge taxes to survive.
Freedom lights the way. 🇺🇸🗽
Barnes has largely kept secret for nearly 43 years. Connally, he said, took him to one Middle Eastern capital after another that summer, meeting with a host of regional leaders to deliver a blunt message to be passed to Iran: Don’t release the hostages before the election. Reagan will win and give you a better deal.
Then, shortly after returning home, Barnes said, Connally reported to William J. Casey, the chairman of Reagan’s campaign and later director of the CIA, briefing him about the trip in an airport lounge.
