This is NOT a vlog. It is "Slow TV" - real time footage from the bow camera as I took the narrowboat from Grove lock through Leighton Buzzard and up to Stoke Hammond.
The funny noises you may hear from my engine are because it isn't happy going at tickover or into and out of neutral. Seems to run fine apart from that...

Theme music: "Vespers" by Topher Mohr and Alex Alena, from the CZcams music library
I love slow TV. Hits my internal reset switch at the end of a hard week. Please keep these coming.
Thank you for not putting any music under these notavlogs as that would totally ruin the experience for me. And thank you also for not shying away from longer videos as I can always press stop when I’m fed up with watching :-).
I love these Not A vlogs :-) So beautiful and relaxing. It was interesting to experience just how long it takes to get through a lock without the editing. Thanks so much!
Just wonderful, thank you. After a long week, and when you can’t sleep as there’s too much going on in your brain, this is heaven. Thank you David
OK I know why people dislike these videos. They are jealous! I work in my shop and just let these long slow vids play and let the soothing noise of the motor just drift me away and keep me calm. I even bought a big screen tv so I an look up and see the beautiful country side just roll by ... destress and carry on ...
Thank you for NOT including music... I totally enjoy the sounds as they are....
So good these. I'll have this on in the background and go through it several times. Wonderful background viewing. Thanks David.
Wow. I didn't think I would be able to view that all in one sitting , but i did and now I understand.
I understand why some narrow boaters only cruise for 2 to 4 hours a day.
I also understand why when the weather has been bad or for other reasons moored up for an extended period I see that Kath from The Narrowboat Experience up on the stern, tiller in hand and a big grin on her face you couldn't scrub off with a hand full of Scotch Brite.
Now all I have to do is win Lotto and I'm on my way over there to do the same for a few weeks or months or until I cruse every inch of the cuts.
I never tire of these not a vlog videos! They are so scenic and peaceful!
THANK YOU for not cutting out the lock. I've always wanted to see the filling, emptying, and moving of the lock from the perspective of the boat, and it was there, not sped up or anything!
What a beautiful country we live in. So relaxing to watch, thank you
I love this, these videos remind me of my time working in Giethoorn as a tour guide on a boat. I miss those days so much.
This is great. I especially like that you didn't cut out the locks, i find it fascinating.
kind of neat to see how quickly the debris in the water and the boat started moving towards the lock once the first paddle started to open, and also interesting to see just how quickly that lock filled...under 5 minutes? Thanks for the realtime vids...beautiful way to spend a snowy cold evening!
A lovely respite in these strange times.
This is such a novel concept! I love it. I presently have the "not a vlog" running on my computer at work. I glance u[p occasionally and enjoy the peacefulness of the trip.
That's EXACTLY how I imagine people using it so I'm glad to hear it :-)
I love these Not A Vlog's. It really gives a feel for what it's like to travel the canals. I'd even enjoy the off boat adventures. Trips to the store in a country you don't live in is a nice slice of life and shows that things aren't so different from what we might be used too.
Hi. Glad you like them. Store trips aren't on the cards, see cruisingthecut.co.uk/f-a-q/
Love these videos David. I am working from home and have the main screen with your video playing at the side of my smaller work screen. That way, it feels like I'm working on the boat as we travel along. (Sorry - 'Royal We' - I know you don't want uninvited guests on the bow of your boat) Also, it saves me having to look outside at the road, traffic and grey, rain filled sky. Cheers
Thank you for having the natural sounds and not music! It makes it seem like I am really there, love it!
Besides the beautiful scenery and wonderfully relaxing sounds, being able to watch the lock activity is educational and inspiring! The patience, care and qualified support of others is heartening. When one is DIY its exceptional to watch. Thanks.
David, I believe you've found a nitch...Music is nice but the true ambiance rests in the sounds combination and sites.... really like it w/ a cocktail or a tea.
I sure enjoy these, especially as you just have the natural sounds. I watch it to fall asleep or sometimes at work where I get a lot of comments on them. I just tuck my small tablet under my computer screen and enjoy. Very relaxing. I am in Minnesota, USA Home of the Mississippi River and 10,000 lakes.
Thank you for not putting down a music soundtrack. It would have been a distraction from the reassuring hum of the engine, the birds, and the swish of the water. As you said I can put my own there if I want. I watch while I write...
You are SO right about added music. Let the ambient sounds suffice eh. - thank you.
we so much enjoyed this cruise with you , they are the best . thank you cheers : ) : )
Perfect as is no music required.
I am watching this after cold, wet weather in November in Virginia: this is one I am saving to revisit throughout the winter months. Lovely stretch of water; amazing variety of narrow boats...and a fine English late summer's day.
Please post more realtime cruises! I enjoyed watching this immensly. (:
I have a playlist of several of these (and there's another, very long one, coming soon too), see czcams.com/play/PLa9px3O5n5hBqL4jZoJRgLtaJc430IURS.html
LOVE YOUR REAL-TIME VIDEOS SHOWING THE CANAL VIEWS FROM YOUR NARROWBOAT. FEEL LIKE AM RIDING ALONG WITH YOU ON YOUR ADVENTURE. THANK YOU DEARLY!!!
This is a great video. It is closest we can come to experiencing the canal without actually being there. That being said I miss the voiceover.
Now for sure I want to chuck it all and live on a narrow boat!! Even though this is impossible I still am maximally stoked! Fantastic video sir!
This vlog was a pure pleasure viewing. And I’m sure to view more you have posted.
Missed your always great narrative and description of what we see. This non VLOG speaks for itself. Thanks for sharing a peaceful journey in your beautiful country. Greetings from the Pacific Northwest.
Kim Ireland
I am glad you are doing these "slow tv" non-vlogs! They are very relaxing, and I enjoy seeing all the sights in slo-mo, as it were. Cheers!
Lovely stuff. I know this stretch of the canal very well indeed. I spotted my pal Mike fettling his boat just after the road bridge 1hr 30 mins in. Right, I need a cup of tea and a cheese sandwich after watching all that!
Totally enjoyable video. The point of view from the bow and length of the video yield both an artistic and realistic trip down the cut. Would like more of these chil-out videos.
Cheers, there are a few more earlier on on the channel, if you scroll back - and more to come as well!
It is filmed like ( 35 millimeters) cinéma 30 years ago.......and the progress about the sound.....is INCREDIBLE....what you present us..is perfect
I enjoyed every meter of it. I live in Norway and this is a completely different world . Thank you
Were this to have been a vlog, I should have been compelled to marvel at how beautifully-composed the picture is, and how attractively framed is the image. Since this is not the case, I will merely state this is one beautiful shot after another.
Thank you so much for doing this. Really beautiful
So pleasant voyage through the canals. Thanks for sharing and take care
As a fellow journalist, i do love your videos...friends & I play a drinking game also. When you say “As you can see...” we drink! Lol
Absolutly loved this, "not a Vlog". You need a windshield wiper to chase the flies off the lens. (smile)
I do, yes!
I like these "not a vlogs" a lot! Thank you!
"Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway. Do they still meet there by The Cut" Guess your video brought me back to a song of my early 20's.
Ahoi David, ein echtes Zeitdokument und ich genaß die Reise. Danke
Corr thats a longun Rained here so not out in the garden so had the afternoon on the canal, thanks to you
Great filming Relaxed and entertained. cheers. SMILES
Looking the video was a so pleasant way to begin the weekend. Thanks David!
Half way through and I'm enjoying this immensely.
So stress-relieving
Oh no! I must NOT be tempted to watch this. My cruise plan for next year is Weedon to London so it won't be all so new and exciting! I'll look at anything from Stoke Bruerne to Braunston as I've done all that, more than a few times but wouldn't mind seeing it again from the cosiness of my bed on a chilly winter night...
A vlog is nice.
So is this.
Wonderful views on Britain.
Thank you.
Love it! Great footage!
This not-a-vlog reminds me to slow down and go with the flow. Very relaxing to watch. The bugs on the lens are fun! If I had to deal with a lock by myself like you, I'd treat myself to a double gin and tonic afterwards. Very silly and stupid, of course. Aloha from Hawai'i.
Thanks man! I use this to get to sleep at night. I have yet to make it past the bridge around the 10 min mark. Cheers brother!!
Yes, this is perfect. It's taken me ages to follow it through. Gould's slow redition of Bach's Goldberg Variations is usually what I use. Cheers.
So peaceful and great to watch while on treadmill.
Walking on water?
A running diesel is all I need for music here:)
This will be my bedtime viewing David,so relaxing, chris
Love this, recovering from omicron and this is perfect for napping to. So relaxing ❤️
Get well soon, I hope!
@@CruisingTheCut Thank you so much and thank you for Cruising The Cut! Love it!
I like when you go past moorings or boatyards. There's nothing quite like having a nose at other boats!
Looked like a very peaceful day out. Good vid
Thanks so much for this! I love it!
I enjoyed this. I have a two screen set up and it's nice to have this on the second monitor. Takes the place of a view out of the window.
Great footage! Thank you.
This is the best video on youtube according to my extremely biased self. Thank you.
Thank you!
great video lot's of hard work on your own , nice job
Lovely stuff.
"Guy Pets Chihuahua to Relax" on CZcams - Apart from that, thankyou for the accompanying Google Earth maps that make the Vlog even more interesting. Tracing the River Ouzel along side the canal which you were Vlogging, I noticed a "Three Lock " Golf course!
Nice video watch in the beginning of a snowstorm. here in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, the snow should last until around noon, then turn to rain, that way I don't have to shovel it.
Love the video's. Wondering about the state of which some of the locks are in. Lack of funding? In Holland we do not have this amount of locks but still....But especially love the vlog's and none-vlogs. gtz!
Awesome scenery
excellent stuff. Love it. Much better without music too, unless it's occasional incidental music
Wonderful - I will put the film in reverse & stare at it whilst on my indoor rowing machine !!
I just watched the WHOLE VIDEO... Wow, I love the format. For me the longer the better, notes with "way-points" as times would be nice..... More cameras!!!! Forward and reverse.
Glda you like it. Alas, multi camera would mean too much data & too much editing!
Another great upload David thank you and even better enhanced with at your suggestion the music I chose to accompany it which is Richard Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries beginning of act 3 of Die Walküre....could have done with a few exploding trees along the tow path though and maybe a few helicopters hovering over the lock!!!!
Loved the footage :)
Recovering from an ice event that left us with lots of broken trees and no power for four days. Power and internet just restored and I came here first. Very relaxing video, just what I needed, thanks. Have you considered doing canal themed calendars or better yet a cruising the canals video game?
When I can't sleep I put the sound on in my headphones and it slowly lulls me to the land of nod.
brings back memories of old country back roads, riding along, driving slow just because I wanted to be there... Course there was the fact the grain elevator opened at seven and my tractor only went 15 miles per hour hauling two wagons full of grain. Could almost hear or should I say here that old tractor watching this....
Yup, my engine does rather sound like that!
@@CruisingTheCut My new send you to sleep when the sheep all run away sounds....
This. More of this.
I've done a fair few of these videos, just scroll through my channel to see them. Cheers
not bad m8, not bad at all, not sure hermans hermits ferry cross the mersey, an rod stewarts i am sailing, have the same feeling as they used to, but keep up the good work!
What a great way to experience something you will probably never see. Very beautiful. Er, could you convince that bug that your lens is not the best place to be. 😀
Those darned spiders!
@@CruisingTheCut I read recently how you can manifest things into your life. If these spiders are not your intention, how about using this neurological facet to reverse manifest or, a super deluxe spiders shield, like the space ship shields used in battle of the Galaxies.
Niece and relaxing sounds
Great video, beautiful scenery. I assume most narrow boats use propellers as the means of propulsion. Are there any other forms of propulsion - for example water jet/water turbine propulsion where water is taken in and forced through a turbine to propel a boat. This type of propulsion system allows a boat to traverse shallow water without damaging a propeller or having debris foul the propeller.
Michael from Canada
I'm not aware of any; I imagine they might have a hard time with all the silt and abandoned shopping trolleys...
WoW!! I really enjoyed this video ...is it possible to see a map of where you are going,??? How do you get back to your home base ??? Sorry im in the U.S. and was wondering...just want to say thank you for taking us along...it's just spectacular!!
Thank you. There are google map links in the video description, I think. Cheers
How long did this sector take at slow speed? Whats best or slightly off/before best time to do this trip? Suggestions please. Will look into boat hire too
Are you familiar with fireplace apps? What you have here is moving art. It has potential for sales in an app for those people who put art on TVs when not watching a program.
Watching this while listening to Pink Floyd Dark side of the moon :) Super chill
A ran the video at 2x speed but started creating a tremendous wake.
So, I slowed her back down.
What a beautiful day you had. Theses are nice videos. I’m quessing when leave the city you need to go the same speed?
Yes, the canal speed limit does not change according to urban or countryside
I really like these, I run it at full screen on one monitor while I am working on he other two. Have you thought of running a cable from the camera on the bow back to you on the stern and plugging into a tablet or something to give you a view from the front while your steering?
All the Best
Bill
Thought of, yes, but I'd rather look where I'm going than squint at a monitor, generally.
I agree without question I would never recommend navigating with only a monitor but I could see it being useful at times. It must be challenging to have a clear view of where your going from 50 or 60 feet back.
All the Best
Bill
Might be worth mentioning on video options you can choose playback speed of normal/ 1.25/1.5 or 2 faster if you prefer
I just don't see the point of doing that. The idea is not to struggle to get through it (!) but to let it play out gently in the background and chill to the speed of the boat while you're doing other things.
@@CruisingTheCut I have never been on a narrow boat but love watching the scenery. At 1.5 speed I prefer it. To you it would just not look right as you do it every day but for many they, like me, will prefer it faster. Choices are good.
Nice relaxing video. Did you backup and get that Dog's Tennis Ball @ 18:00? NVM, I see the owner was able to get it after the Boats wake brought it closer.
Cheers, see my vlog of the same trip (vlog 151 I think) and I explain about the ball!
very amazing video greetings :)
At 19 mins, did a dog fall in the water? A very relaxing video.
I have now watch all your Vlogs and have enjoyed them. But one question how do you manage your medical needs, ie gp services?
Cheers. Please see my website FAQ page, cheers
Very nice thanks David old chap
I did try it with a bit of music but slip knot just didn't fit the video so I tried a bit of guns and roses, nope still didn't work, it was suggested I try some foster and Allan! Oh come on it's not that sort of video, so I settled for the sound of the motor, no not Motörhead just the sound your good old boat engine.
I like the idea of what you are doing. I would like to do it myself , but live in middle of the states. Any ideas on something similar here I could do?
Not that I know of
You can rent canal boats on the Erie Canal. A wonderful way to travel, but lacking much of the pastoral beauty of the canls in the UK.
Thank you
Curious about the history of the bridge at 28:00 was that an industrial branch at some point? Google maps is showing a carpark on the other side. Curiosity has gripped me.
The opening in the bridge originally led into Brantoms Wharf, filled in during the 1960s and the ugly office block built.
