On the Path of Death, It will go with you and help you. ||1||
गंगा जल गुर गोबिंद नाम ॥
(Naam), The Name of the Lord Gobind , is the holy water of the Ganges.
जो सिमरै तिस की गति होवै पीवत बहुड़ न जोनि भ्रमाम ॥१ रहाउ ॥
Whoever meditates on it, is saved; drinking it in, the mortal does not wander in reincarnation again. ||1||Pause||
पूजा जाप ताप इसनान ॥
It is my worship, meditation, austerity and cleansing bath.
सिमरत नाम भए निहकाम ॥२॥
Meditating in remembrance on the Naam, I have become free of desire. ||2||
राज माल सादन दरबार ॥ Naam is my domain and empire, wealth, mansion and court.
सिमरत नाम पूरन आचार ॥३॥
Meditating in remembrance on the Naam brings perfect conduct. ||3||
नानक दास इहु कीआ बीचार ॥
Slave Nanak has deliberated, and has come to this conclusion:
बिन हरि नाम मिथिआ सभ छार ॥४॥८॥
Without the Lord HARI's Name, everything is false and worthless, like ashes. ||4||8||

तीरथि नावण जाउ तीरथ नाम है ॥ The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the sacred shrine of pilgrimage.
तीरथ सबद बीचार अंतर गिआन है ॥
My sacred shrine of pilgrimage is spiritual wisdom within, and contemplation on the Word of the Shabad.
Dhanasaree Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji SGGS 687 अंतरि मैल जे तीरथ नावै तिस बैकुंठ न जाना ॥
With filth within the heart, even if one bathes at sacred places of pilgrimage, still, he shall not go to heaven.
लोक पतीणे कछू न होवै नाही राम अयाना ॥१॥
Nothing is gained by trying to please others - the Lord RAAM cannot be fooled. ||1||
पूजहु राम एक ही देवा ॥
Worship the One Divine Lord RAAM
साचा नावण गुर की सेवा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The true cleansing bath is service to the Guru. ||1||Pause||
जल कै मजन जे गति होवै नित नित मेंडक नावहि ॥
If salvation can be obtained by bathing in water, then what about the frog, which is always bathing in water?
जैसे मेंडक तैसे ओइ नर फिरि फिरि जोनी आवहि ॥२॥
As is the frog, so is that mortal; he is reincarnated, over and over again. ||2||
Raag Aasa Bhagat Kabeer Ji SGGS 484
मिलै जि तीरथि नातिआं डडां जल वासी॥
If one could attain liberation by taking bath at pilgrimage centres then (we know that) the frogs always live in water.
वाल वधाइआं पाईऐ बड़ जटां पलासी॥
If growing long hair could make it available then the banyan has long roots hanging from it.
नंगे रहिआं जे मिलै वण मिरग उदासी॥
If going naked gets it, all the deer in the forest can be called detached ones.
VAARAN BHAI GURUDAS JI
गुर सागरो रत्नागरो तित रतन घनेरे राम
The Guru is the ocean,the mountain of jewels ,overflowing with jewels
करि मजनो सपत सरे मन निरमल मेरे राम ॥
Take your bath in the seven seas, O my mind, and become pure O LORD RAAM
निरमल जलि न्हाए जा प्रभ भाए पंच मिले वीचारे ॥
One bathes in the water of purity when it is pleasing to God, and obtains the five virtues by reflective meditation.
काम करोध कपट बिखिआ तज सच नाम उर धारे ॥
Renouncing sexual desire, anger, deceit and corruption, he enshrines the True Name in his heart.
हउमै लोभ लहर लब थाके पाए दीन दइआला ॥
When the waves of ego, greed and avarice subside, he finds the Lord Master, Merciful to the meek.
नानक गुर समान तीरथ नही कोई साचे गुर गोपाला ॥३॥
O Nanak, there is no place of pilgrimage comparable to the Guru; the True Guru is the Lord GOPAL. ||3||

गंग बनारस सिफत तुमारी नावै आतम राउ ॥
The Lord's Praise is my River Ganges and my city of Benares; my soul takes its sacred cleansing bath there.
सचा नावण तां थीऐ जां अहनिस लागै भाउ ॥३॥ If night and day, I enshrine love for God that becomes my true cleansing bath,. {In Japji Sahib also the first preaching of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji when he came out from Bein River in Sultanpur Lodhi after 48 hours. सुणिआ मंनिआ मनि कीता भाउ ॥ Listening and believing with love and humility in your mind, )||3|| RAAG AASA SRI GURU NANAK DEV JI 358 गुरू समुंद नदी सभ सिखी नातै जित वडिआई ॥
The Guru is the ocean, and all His Teachings are the river. Bathing within it, glorious greatness is obtained.

सतिगुरु तीरथ छड कै अठसठ तीरथ नावण जाही ।
Leaving aside pilgrimage centre in the form of the true Guru (God) people go to take bath at the sixty-eight holy places.
बगुल समाधि लगाइ कै जिउ जल जंतां घुट घुट खाही ।
Like crane, they keep their eyes closed in trance but they catch hold of small creatures, press them hard and eat them.
हसती नीर नवालीअन बाहर निकल खेह उडाही ।
Elephant is given bath in water, but coming out of water it again spreads dust on its body.
नदी न डुबै तूंबड़ी तीरथ विस निवारै नाही ।
Colocynth does not drown in water and even baths at many pilgrimage centres do not let its poison go. {In these Varaans Bhai Gurudas ji has said that if you leave your Satguru and go to various pilgrimages then one has to keep in mind that Crane while leaving in holy river keep their eyes closed but they catch hold on small creatures and eat them which means that one doesn’t leave the vice merely by taking dip in Holy Water or taking holy Bath. Another example is of Elephant who after taking Bath comes out and again spreads dust on his body. This indicates that if you don’t change your ways of life or surrender ill thinking and actions you may keep on loading sins in body and mind. Another example given by Bhai Gurudas ji is that Colocynth keeps on flowing and immersed in water at various pilgrimage centres but that does not change its taste which remains bitter this reflects that merely taking dip may not change the nature and outlook of a person who is harsh. He has to modify himself to change his attitude of sweetness towards all else his harshness may continue and gradually his enemies may keep on increasing.
Dipping in pilgrimages/holy rivers or at the time of Poornima or Amavasya is not barred.vPeople go to various Temples Gurudwaras and hilly places on these and and some other auspicious days. They may go but simultaneously they should start taking the Name of God by heart day and night as much as possible which is the only way to improve and become pure.}
VAARAN BHAI GURUDAS VAR 15 PAUDI 10.The essence of the holy verses Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and ….in this Shabad Sung by Bhai Rai Singh Ji is that Merely taking a dip in Holy Ganges or any other holy place is not sufficient one must remember Lord by heart and praising the Guru.
If one takes a dip and feels that all his sins are washed then he is mistaken as the sins are said to be washed only by Naam Simran (Bhariye mat paapa ke sang Oh dhope Nave (NAAM) ke rang (GURU NANAK DEV JI JAPJI SAHIB 20TH PAUDI भरीऐ मति पापा कै संगि ॥
Bhareeai Math Paapaa Kai Sang ||
But when the intellect is stained and polluted by sin,
ओहु धोपै नावै कै रंगि ॥
Ouhu Dhhopai Naavai Kai Rang ||
It can only be cleansed by the Love of the Name.
THEN Guru Nanak Says (21st Paudi)
अंतरगति तीरथि मलि नाउ ॥
Antharagath Theerathh Mal Naao ||
Cleanse yourself with the Name, at the sacred shrine deep within.In Japjee Sahib only Guru Nanak Dev ji preached (5th Paudi ) that गावीऐ सुणीऐ मनि रखीऐ भाउ ॥
Gaaveeai Suneeai Man Rakheeai Bhaao ||
Sing, and listen, and let your mind be filled with love.
and Guru Nanak Devji said that अम्रित वेला सचु नाउ वडिआई वीचारु ॥
Anmrith Vaelaa Sach Naao Vaddiaaee Veechaar ||
In the Amrit Vaylaa, the ambrosial hours before dawn, chant the True Name, and contemplate His Glorious Greatness.(4th Paudi)
