I like SHR RAID but yeah your going to be locked into Synology if the unit dies and you need to migrate your disks. If you want the flexibility then the standard RAID levels are preferable. However for mixed drives you could have unused storage space that SHR would be able to leverage.

never chose shr raid!
always use normal raid 1/5/etc
