In theory, it could take place after the second game, in fact it probably would it Mitsuhede (sorry if misspelled on phone) was working with Nobunaga as he joined up before the war in the first game, amd stayed with him for pretty much the entirety of Nobunaga's conquest.

Onimusha Tactics has always held such a special place in my mind. Not particularly because of the game itself but what it represents. A world where an established video game series would just simply create a spin off in a totally different genre. I genuinely yearn for that time!
I would love to see a Halo RPG - an Assasins Creed puzzle game - a Last of Us real time strategy game. Variety is the spice of life and strange unexpected oddities like Onimusha Tactics are what makes this hobby so interesting.

This was actually my first Onimusha game. I opted for the Gamecube that generation and became unhappy with the frequency of releases and the lack of choices in various genres so I invested in a Gameboy player and a few of the 'tactics' games to prop up the selection of things I could play on my Gamecube. Eventually I had to give up and just buy a PS2, which is what I should have done in the first place, I was watching scores of games I wanted to play pass me by, waiting months and years for games I actually wanted to play.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  Před 3 lety +3

There is a weird bit of charm in this game that keeps me coming back.
I got it used at GameStop about a year after it came out and at the time I was very new to SRPGs so I eventually brought it back because it seemed too slow and a little hard.
But, thanks to games like Disgaea I became much more into grinding in SRPGs and I bought this game again a few years ago because I learned the deeper mechanics concerning the recipes.
This is one of the only SRPGs where you can make any character a god very quickly with infinite stat boosts and infinite souls grinding for weapon and armor upgrades and I personally love that aspect of it.

I think I can help in placing where Onimusha Tactics is in terms of the timeline for the games. I can place it either before or after Onimusha 2. You see, the reason why the Akechi were against the Oda in Onimusha Warlords is due to the fact that, at the time, the Akechi were serving the Saito Clan, the Clan that were in charge of the Mino Region where Inabayama Castle (later changed to Gifu Castle) is at. However, when Inabayama Castle was conquered by Nobunaga, the Akechi (along with many other ex-Saito Retainers) joined Nobunaga's, hence why Mitsuhide was originally working for them.

Tactics Ogre and FFT especially are just phenomenal games. You do a really good job with this type of video, so it would be cool to see you cover completely different genres. But that said, as long as you’re able to keep making decent money off CZcams, It’s cool.

@@AvalancheReviews I think it actually does a fantastic job at what it sets out to do: be an Onimusha game with a Smash Bros coat of paint. There are Issens, charge attacks, souls to worry about during battle, elemental super moves, and I think the characters all feel pretty similar to how they did in the games for the most part, in terms of moves. And there are plenty of unlockables and things to do for progression.

Barry White wishes he was you, my friend. Long time, no talk Jared. Hope you're doing well. Haven't seen any of your stuff in a while, been super busy. But this is an extremely refreshing change from what I normally see from you as Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite game of all time. I even have every single modding tool used in well, modding the game (which I haven't finished my mod yet and probably never will, but I'm familiar enough with the tools that I could help anyone who might want to one day make a mod...winkwinknudgenudge) on my PC. But this brings another thing to mind... Tactical/Strategy RPGs are probably one of my three favorite genres, the other two being Survival Horror and Metroidvanias, and I was curious... Have you ever played a game called Vanguard Bandits? If not, would it be too much to ask for a review video of said game? I assure you, if you haven't played it, you'll be pleasantly surprised as it mixes Mech combat with the genre in question. Not to mention a few story branches to check out, all of which have you going in EXTREMELY different directions, almost as if each story branch is a different game entirely. And while we're on the subject, the best way I could describe the game is Diet Front Mission. Watching Onimusha Tactics in this video reminds me a bit of Vanguard Bandits, except that VB has what I'm guessing is a near infinite depth of story when compared to each other, but I also think VB has more depth to it in almost every aspect. From what I'm seeing in your review, this game most closely resembles Saiyuki: Journey to The West, which closely follows a monk travelling across China (Fairly sure it's China) with some important task... It's based off of an old Chinese legend; I can't recall the actual name of the specific legend, but as OT is set in Feudal Japan, Saiyuki is set in Feudal China and has several characters from their long tapestry of folklore join your party over the course of the game. Anyway, OT seems to be the SRPG for people who have never played an SRPG (Well, other than FFT and Tactics Ogre, but I can see how those two games could turn people away with how complex they can be to the uninitiated) and the only game in the genre that I could see being as simple as OT is S:JTTW. But anyway, I say all of that to drop a few ideas in your head and perhaps give you a few potentially new (to you), old school SRPGs for you to check out and to see how you feel about reviewing Vanguard Bandits. My birthday is in November, so you've got time to play, write, record, and edit. Haha. Anyway, it's always a good day when I know you're still out there cruising through life, but I do hope your voice gets better and I hope you're on the road to recovery with all of that. There's nothing but love here for you. Talk to you soon.
P.S. I strongly recommend checking out www.ffhacktics.com and glancing over the mods that they already have made, plus the modding tools they have on the site. Some of those mods they have tell completely original stories (Using maps and rooms that normally only cutscenes take place in, completely original job classes, etc.) and some are just so absurdly bad ass that the only guy capable of developing such a thing would have the last name Norris. Picture Solid Snake, Dante from DMC, Link, Ramza and Cloud all in one party with a difficulty curve that has a hatred for anyone who isn't a veteran of FFT being in one complete package. If you want to see the mod played through, just look up Journey of the Five, but I highly recommend playing through the mod yourself. Anyway, sorry for the text wall, but I tried to make it enjoyable and informative. Kind of like this one guy I know who writes reviews and has a CZcams channel... Something about a natural disaster involving snow... Anyway, catch you later bro. Have a good one.

Your 3 favorite genres are basically my 3 favorites! I haven't played Vanguard Bandits, but I'm always looking out for a copy that isn't way too overpriced. I went to ffthacks once to get a mod that fixes the slow down in the psp ver of fft and forces it down to 4:3. Well worth taking a look at. Back in the day, I only knew about difficulty tweak mods. Never knew people were going so in depth with modifying fft. That fucking rules!

Sidebar : FF Tactics was my first experience with 'tactic-style' games - and it made me fantasize about allllll the universes they could translate into this style of game 😮
😒 many were really, really slow on the uptake - some finally arrived in one form or another but I can't help but feel how enjoyable this style would be if done in a [insert a favourite franchise/universe] flavour 😌

I was always a fan of the Vandal Hearts series myself, two classic PS1 titles that I enjoyed quite a lot, even if the second game did have some questionable changes to the core gameplay. It is neat to see that they made this game fit within the established elements of the series, even if it's not quite as bleak and gory as the mainline entries.

Huh, didn't know this existed, but I guess it fits into the brief period of time between 2001 and 2005 where a weird number of franchises decided to try having a tactical RPG spinoff.
I do wish there were comparisons in the video to its more direct contemporaries on GBA, Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis and FFTA. In fact, this game looks an awful lot like Capcom copying a lot of stuff from Tactics Ogre (the character sprite style, movement and attack animations, the environments, etc.) and putting Onimusha paint over it, possibly to try and compete with FFTA, which came out the same year. Not to conclusively assume anything, but considering you mentioned it being underfunded, that might've been a cost-saving measure on the developer's part.
