Finding the Best ARPG Ever Made: Hero Siege

- Hero Siege is one of those ARPGs that looks the look, it sounds the sound, but does it walk the walk? In my opinion, it's more like it's crawling the crawl, but can it muster enough interesting gameplay to break ahead of all the other games we've looked at? Can it use enough Diablo 2 references to be possibly considered the Best ARPG Ever Made? I'll let you know, you just have to watch the whole 11 minute video, enjoy.

What i find really weird about this game is that it first released as a roguelite - no open world, no skill trees, no levels, no inventory, no quests, etc. But then one day devs were like - fuck it, were making an ARPG now - and completely changed how the game works. In fact that Relics system (9:08), as well as jumping mechanics, are a leftover from the times when the game was a roguelite.
Yep, I remember it from that time. Just some maps with waves of enemies and loot. It felt like Vampire Survivors alpha prototype back then. Was good for some mindless hacking and slashing...

The moment Diablo 3 came out the more Hero Siege tried to be Pixel Diablo 3. It never did anything unique and just chased shadows.
I loved the old version of the game , what was stopping them from making the rpg game they have now and keep a separate game for the bullet heaven one ?

Minecraft dungeons is so boring I wouldn't recommend it to anyone tbh unless you're super super into minecraft that's just my opinion tho

I'm so glad I found your channel at the beginning of this series. You tube keeps recommending me the list of every diablo 2 unique... Even though I watched it about 5 times already because I had nothing better to do.
Oh boy, this game. You can find screenshots of the Panic Art Studio's CEO saying such wonderful things as: "Lets f@#$ing murder all these pieces of s#@%" and "I'm gonna make sure my every investment kills as many of these animals as possible" in reference to immigrants and leftists. Thankfully Steam was generous enough to let me refund the game after providing said screenshots.
Even disregarding that, over time the D2 references in this game started to feel less like a love letter and more like lazy plagiarism. I'd recommend every other ARPG you've reviewed, then a pile of koala crap, before Hero Siege.
I am surprised I DIDN'T hear anything about that, usually the drama appears to me as soon as I start making one of these videos. I'm sad I didn't know, I would've made some more jokes lol
nice video, props for the editing and overall construction of this video, its really well made. its always criminal that people like you who make actually good well made content have so small of a following.
I am always both inspired and horrified by you brilliant madness, and while I'm often briefly jealous that I will never be able to write and act such unique blend of batshit and funny, I usually leave entertained and puzzled at the same time. You are one of a kind, and I love it.

Since your playing every ARPG ever made I'm here to mention you'll be forced to emulate Record of Lodoss War for Dreamcast. I think you'll like it as magic sucks so Chad melee build is the literal only way to play, it has a unique upgrade systsem that makes it so currency is never wasted and is a pretty difficult game.
That is a new recommendation for me, I'm excited that I get to break out the Dreamcast! Coming at some point in the next decade, definitely.
Somehow this one never appeared on my radar. Been playing most ARPG's but seems like I kind of dodged a bullet here. Keep it up, love your content

@@seer6251 Not at all, everything you've said is justified and I hate the monetization system in this game. It's basically a free to play game hiding behind a super cheap price. It does feel like wasted potential because it looks really nice but it's like a colorful balloon, pretty on the outside but empty on the inside. I'm much more of a fan of grim dawn and after learning about things like diablo 2 mod for it I'm going back to it. Cheers

A neat ARPG you might want to try is Shining Soul 2 on the GBA. It's simple and stripped down, but I got seriously addicted to it. It had very clear diablo inspirations

no he did not mention hero siege 2.0 in this video bc this video was made befor hero siege 2.0 was known but i wrote a comment in one of his videos and he answered that he will look in to hero siege 2.0 but he cant promise to make a video on it if i remeber his comment correctly.
This game used to be a sort of Risk of Rain clone where you just collected shit and completed stages as fast possible, it was 100 times more fun and original imo.

I remember once upon a time the nomad had the ability to one shot bosses with its clone skill + tornados as it would let you do near infinite damage for a few seconds. long before these 50 different reworks
I actually do kinda want to see you review Minecraft dungeons because I saw that it had mostly positive reviews on steam, which surprised me unless it's exclusively children playing it. I need a professional man-child to check it out and verify it.

Hero Siege has disappointed me every update they continue to push out. In season 13 I think they turned everything into a damage sponge and the game for me has been extremely tedious to even attempt to play. They also released a paid dlc class that is worse than every other class in the game. I forgot to mention they also nerfed the amount of xp you get and I believe the game took 4x as long as it used to

This was a great 'turn your brain off' kind of arpg. Really cozy to play on a controller. Just no substance. REALLY hope you do 40k Inquisitor: Martyr. It actually slaps imo

The owner/CEO of Hero Siege could fill another five minutes of this video on his own as well. I have over a thousand hours in HS, and dealing with Elias was the last straw to finally quit that terrible game. (PAS = Piled Azzloads of Shiet)
See if you can get a refund. Had about ~50 hours played when I sent Steam screenshots of his tweets and they refunded both the game and the DLC.
I wanted to make almost the same PAS joke LOL. I just figured it wasn't fair to the developer, but knowing what I do now I regret it.
i can't tell you how many times i've looked at this game and nearly dove in face first - but everytime i glance something holds me back

This game was a prototype Vampire Survivors at first; a fun - albeit hard - time killer with lots of charm. Waves of enemies, traps, insane weapons, addictive loot system, simple progression. In fact when I tried VS I instantly got hooked because it reminded me of Hero Siege.
Then out of nowhere the developer wanted pixel Diablo 2 so that's what we got. Then wanted pixel Diablo 3. Plus he got greedy with tons of dlc, bans and personal insults, but that's another topic entirely.
You said you like to "run and shoot bombs", well, 100 years ago this was exactly that. Whatever the case, the game I paid for doesn't exist anymore lol.

the game has just received a massive update in the form of hero siege 2, but it's just an update you download which fixes most of the issues you talked about, hope you will look into it again

I had heard the same things about Hero Siege but just didn't get the praise for it, for the many issues that you mentioned (and some extra that bothered me). I think all these major redesigns for the game just created an abomination that doesn't know what it is

Oh hey you referenced an old guide of mine probably! I wrote the first english guide for one of the classes in the game many years ago when it was a roguelite (The attribute system is reminiscent of that.) I used to love this game, but there were some really unpleasant patches in it's history (the patch that introduced resources to every class but didn't have ways to get mana/regen.) Also the creator of the game is an out-and-unabashed racist and the community sadly reflects that :(

Haven't tried it on PC, but did on mobile. I thought it was a fun and compact arpg with great depth. I also like how there's lots of variety in combat, and the end game is just as fun as tactical roguelikes like nuclear throne and isn't just a flashy mess where you can't distinguish anything. I liked that. I thought it was perfect. But yeah, I dropped it because there are quite a lot of stuff you had to pay for and the mobile version became a bad and unoptimized port of the pc version.
My weekend was redeemed right there.

Loving your work Seer. After seeing the video on Borderlands, I wonder if something like Nioh would count as an ARPG. Personally Nioh 2 is my favorite ARPG, since there is a lot of fun stuff you can do build wise, but you also can compensate for anything with mechanical skill if you're good enough.
What counts as a arpg to him? Are we gonna see games like monster hunter and dark souls reviewed or just Diablo likes
I actually really want to play Nioh 2, my brother gave it high praise. Maybe the rules could stretch to make it count lol, but I'd have to play it first obviously.
It used to be such an epic game and then they made it an ARPG. I still enjoy it sure but there is no more pulling out my pyromancer and just steamrolling maps until my computer crashes.
I dunno if you have any sort of principle for early access but I would definitely recommend checking out Ghostlore. Good videos fuckman.

Gotta try that 2.0. First hated this version. Then grew to love it. Then hated 2.0. And now love it. Realizing it’s what I had expected of the game to begin with. Minus the potion stuff and inventory space the game is looking much better for the ARPG itch

@@seer6251 Dont do dins curse, do dins legacy, its the updates sequal ! :D To eleborate: They made a game called Depths of Despair, which became Din's Curse, and then that became Din's Legacy. They are all basically building on the previous entry using the same engine. Din's legacy has everything in Din's curse but more.

i remember playing this game a LOT of time ago (like, 7-8 years ago) and i'm pretty sure it wasn't an arpg, it was something like a roguelike, incredible game but for the younger me it was too hard (i was 12 💀) so i left it in the backrooms of my steam library.
Please check Xanadu Next in the future, is like Diablo but made in Japan

one of it's prominent flaws is its dev team/hackers. leaderboards are full of hackers and people who run macros, account sharers and more. (mostly in the china servers). and the devs won't ban them because they splurge lots of money on their game. it makes it so you are at a huge disadvantage if you are climbing towards top 10 in the leaderboards but it also inflates the market and makes some of the best items nearly impossible to obtain/extremely pricey. one time, there was a shield that went from 1m-4m rubies. a day later, a hacker bought all of them out and the prices went from 1m-4m rubies to around 20-100m in a day.

In my experience of this game, you'd play with no resistance whatsoever until you just instantly die. 90% of the time I wasn't even sure what happened.

Hero Seige used to be a wave based area defense with numerous mobs and items and it turned into a diablo 3 clone and ruined its image from being something unique into just another run of the mill league , and then before that like someone already mentioned it was a roguelite
The game has changed identities and become worse for it with every iteration,. A tragedy of its own making.
Seems like even now, they bloat the game with more shit it didn't need. Who the fuck wants an angelic item? It's like when blizzard introduced Ancient Ancients into diablo 3 and thought that was peak game design
