His singing is so incredible and it is amazing how effortlessly he make it look
That paired with his immaculate guitar playing puts him in a league of his own.

My Dad pass away in November if 2023 and looking this giving me sweet remembering of him play the guitar đž đąhe use to play like this!!!! And he play in gospel quartet music gospel. The name of the group was called the Cumberland Rivers in the other group he used to play with was called Slim and The Morning Echoes. He had a special way of playing his guitars he was like an old style playing the Blues I'm listening to how to use the play is guitar in I'm thinking now that he used to play it just like the blues players but I believe he told me that somebody when he was younger talking about to play a good time when he was younger and the way he played it is like John Lee Hooker. That's how my father used to play the guitar when I was growing up . I remember when we used to go to my uncle's house and he used to have cookouts at his house. The kids have to go down in the basement in a grown-ups be upstairs. And they used to play the blues all night long. And when my cousin was asleep they used to wake him up to see him dancing to the funky chicken or whatever it was crazy they are working out of his sleep and they would brag about their son know how to dance and they will wake him out of his sleep to make him dance do funky chicken or whatever it was crazy . Now Father's Day is coming up and I feel some type of way.đą but listening to the Blues bring black good memories of my father.đąđąđąđąđą
This is why i love youtube. So many musical gems and brilliant talented artists of the past who get little or no radio-play can be enjoyed by the many of us who crave real talent and artistry. Excellent.
We're lucky to even have what we do. The depression killed record sales. If the blues revival hadn't happened and hadn't been helped by the English bands of the 60s, we wouldn't be able to enjoy performances like this at all

Lonnie paved the way for folks like BB King and Muddy Waters. Such a natural talent at both vocals and guitar. Makes it look so effortless.

Don't let me forget this music...
Lonnie Johnson was the father of virtually all modern blues, rock and jazz guitar, way of soloing, single lines and all. He recorded With Louis Armstrong in the twenties, toured with Bessie Smith and a lot of other stars, influenced Django, Charlie Christian, T-bne Walker, Robert Johnson... in his early records Elvis Presley imitated his way of singing and took a lot of his gestures, inflections, vibrato...
Respect.

One of the songs Elvis recorded at SUN records but never released was a version of Lonnie Johnson's original "Tomorrow Night" - you could tell that Elvis heard Johnson's version when he lived in the Lauderdale Courts in Memphis as a young man.

Good morning đ Wishing you a blessed day.
Gosh damn !!!! Those were the days!!!! Absolutely Beautiful!!!!
Hello!!! How are you doing today! Please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you're a fan... Stay Safe!
Lonnie was my first houseguest in London Ontario ( I bought a nice yellow brick home at 177 Central Av in 1966 $ 13,000 bucks) I think it was 1968 and Lonnie was the darling of the folk music set in Toronto. He was playing a very odd gig at a fleabitten old country/Western Bar. The audience was very unsure of what was happening on stage as Lonnie obviously had nothing in his repetoire to suit their tastes. The closest he could come was a number called "My Mother's Arms" (which he performed in every other set,I think. Noone there had any idea that this fellow was a living legend of the Jazz Guitar, having virtually invented it along with his friend Eddie Lang. Lonnie played with The Duke way back in '27
nice story glad you could share it thank you
mectron63 ... I agree ... I wish I could have been there for breakfast ... and hang out with a legend ...
Keith McMahon Stories like this are gold ! Thanks... you can see he is playing a really cheap Kay guitar.. which would probably shred the fingers of most of the players watching this !
Capt Larry
Kay, wow my first ever guitar was a Kay, bought it from a jumble sale for about ÂŁ3 back in about 1985, I remember being surprised when I went to buy strings and they were more than I paid for the guitar :) it was an utter piece of shit, but I was so happy to have it :)
+zachary smith that is what Kay was famous for... utter POS.. but like all cheap guitars, if you work them over, and most poor players had to do it themselves... you got something you could play.. that was yours, and like nothing else. I had a string of Harmony guitars.. a cut up from silvertone or kay.. but not much... but we made those old boxes play... and damn if we didn't love 'em
This is downright surreal. The intro, the phantom vocal start, his playing, the camera cutting to the band, his abrupt finish, the all white audience in formal attire, the thank yous... I am baffled in the best possible way.
If Lynch did music videos...
Doesn't he though?

Alonzo Johnson AKA Lonnie Johnson: 2/8/1899
- With a career that spanned nearly fifty years, this pioneer guitarist, as well as singer, songwriter, and violinist, revolutionized the role of the guitar in both the genres of jazz and the blues. His music marked the beginning of an unprecidented style of single-note soloing which used string bending and vibrato when he first began recording in 1925. He worked with a number of the greatest musicians of his time, performing with Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, and Louis Armstrong. Django Reinhardt, T-Bone Walker, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, and even Robert Johnson drew inspiration from this genius of a guitarist.
