- My mansion needs a new basement. Today I am attempting to lay rock in the basement, to allow us to pour a new concrete floor, build an internal drainage system, and build a radon mitigation system. I run the Dingo, shovel dirt, pour concrete, calculate a materials list, spread over 20 tons of rock, and learn a lot along the way.

The good news is that houses built back then had so many air leaks the radon concentrations wouldn’t have been nearly what they would be today in a house built to modern code. Having a mitigation system is the right choice.

Thank you for explaining Radon and the importance of mitigating your home so well. My mother passed away from lung cancer caused by Radon gas. My entire family was exposed to Radon in their home for years and we had no idea that we had a problem. We bought meters and passed them around to our neighbors and friends. Some people chose to have their homes mitigated. Some people didn’t even want to test their homes . It certainly isn’t a fun way to die. It isn’t expensive to correct even in an older home.
Cole, don’t forget the sewerage connection you might need for the home theatre extension - build it in now. 😁👌❤️❤️❤️😊

I hope you’re going to put down a good vapor barrier before you pour the concrete. It should also be taped and sealed well!

So glad to see you addressing radon! So many people don't know about it. If you have a sump pump chances of exposure is much higher. Very good plan on removing it from your house. We did the same thing. When we tested our house the lab actually called us and told us not to be staying in the house until it is fixed.
I'm anxious for the completion, but at the same time, will miss these videos. I originally came here for the farming videos, but really enjoying the reno vids.

Three notes of interest for you Cole.
1. Your drainpipe should be a perforated pipe covered with a filtering cloth before you bury it in rock.
2. Your radon pipe also needs to be perforated, covered with a filter cloth, and higher than your perimeter pipe so it doesn't accidently draw water into it.
3. You should also put a cloth over top of the entire floor of rock before you pour the floor so your concrete doesn't seep into the rock.
You are doing a great service to the house and all the work that You Justin and Roman are doing will be there for your children's, children's, children to enjoy.

What makes you think he isnt gonna use perforated pipes? He has to use perf pipe or nothing will even get into them.
Cloth over rock so concrete doesnt seep into it? LOL Really? Ive poured many basements and ive never seen any seepage that occured
@warrenmichael918 In his preview, he had non perforated pipe laying in one of his perimeter trenches, hence that comment.
How many floors have you dug up once poured to see if the concrete has seeped into the stone? Every basement floor that I have ever worked if it had stone, we put a barrier over the stone. If it was sand, we poured directly on the sand.
the white pipe he had laying on the floor was just an example. He also said he was going to buy "rolls" of drain pipe. that white pipe doesnt come in "rolls" ; drain pipe does. thus I think you can be assured he will buy the correct pipe.
@larryfreeman7979 I'm sure he will. He may have a building expert on hand guiding his moves for all we know. That still shouldn't stop people from making observations and suggestions. I only made suggestions based on what I saw and things I know from my home construction days. It would be different if I was at his house seeing everything in person.
@@mark15vintage9 ive poured basements and have also torn down a few houses with basements and ive never seen this concrete seepage youre worried about. Ive torn out thousands of feet of sidewalks and driveways that were poured directly on gravel and i still havent ever witnessed this seepage youre trying to say exists. Im not saying he will not or shouldnt llay a vapor barrier down but it isnt to stop any seepage into the tamped gravel. I did notice he was using non perf pipe but later in the video he specifically said he was buying perf tile from a neighbor or friend, so i knew he wasnt using solid pipe.
You are going to be so glad when the basement is finished and go to the main living part of the house. You and Justine and Roman make a good team and are thinking of every aspect of the house. I hope other contractors think about radon gas and the danger it poses. I wouldn’t miss one episode of this build because of your contagious enthusiasm. God bless you and Nave and the babies.

Coming from an IT guy. When you get ready to start wiring, please heavily consider running network cable (minimum CAT6) through the house. Even if you don't use it now, it will be so much better when you want to connect things in your house (tv, cameras, etc). Food for thought if it hasn't already been chewed.

All the labor you guys have put in is amazing. I think it might have been easier and cheaper to lift the house, demo the old foundation and pour a new one with all the drainage and radon ventilation already done.

those drain are what we call the Big O and we put the big O on the outside of the foundation

Radon awareness is important and a very good thing to know. Most people don't realize that the risk is as bad as smoking. Or that if you already smoke, your lung cancer risk more than doubles. Since you do live in a very high risk location, I'd encourage you to also set up radon detectors to validate the remediation system is performing as planned, and to catch any unanticipated breakdown, blockage, or underperformance. Systems don't work perfectly forever (if they even work as planned).

But it’s totally fascinating and I really love how much y’all love to work, and want to do a quality job, not a hurry up just to get it done job. This is one of those channels that I love to watch every day. Your “can do” attitude and cheerful spirit set this channel apart from others. A trick to deal with digging out like Roman is doing at 18:01 is to grab a Sawzall and use a wood blade on the soil. You simply slice the wall into columns then break one off. The rest can just be cut as fast as the saw can go. Get a trenching shovel and toss the results into the wheelbarrow. It will greatly speed things up for the digger.
You guys are certainly doing a great job on this house. You will have these videos to share with all of your grandkids.

True, half of the house has porch around it and no way to dig under it
yes, when its a new pour and they have easy access to the outer perimeter. Most basements also have this drain system inside and under the floor like he is doing. He also said in this video that he would like to do this to the outside one day.

I am so proud of all 3 of them. Working on a hundred year old house that wasn't done right in the first place is no easy feat. Cole is going to know the construction of the house inside and out, which will be invaluable to the coming generations. I applaud them for their knowledge and work ethic.
I wouldn’t say it wasn’t done right- it was done to the standards of THEIR day, not ours. They didn’t have building codes back then in the country.
Layering the sand in with the heavy clay should help with your ramp. I think that's why you found the sand. It was a way to protect the basement. We've been getting enormous amounts of rain during the night, and low temperatures during the day despite the hazy sunshine. The other night, we received 5 inches. South Central Iowa has been severely dry for over 2 years. Our rain has been soaking in, but our creeks and small rivers have come out of their banks this last week. It finally receded, and it rained again, and again. Most of the crops are lovin' this weather. 😊❤ But, I was thinking about your basement the other night. 😅 The Cornstar pool? 😊

Y'all just dumped in stone, right to the footer, so that you can dig it back out to put in a drain system????
Ever think to just pile the stone in the middle, if not put the piping in first, to save a LOT of extra work that wouldn't be needed??

At least with all the rain, the corn will grow nice and tall... at least for a while. So, $$$$.... That's a good thing. Concrete pours are looking good. Your basement walls are still going to weep moisture, until you coat the outer portions of them, with concrete sealer membrane. Concrete is an open pored substance. Until you plug the pores in the 'crete, your basement walls are going to sweat.
Definitely put insulation on that basement floor. You will appreciate it in time. Cold floors are for penguins. Not humans.

Cole I would Recommend That You put a Plastic Membrane Down to Keep The Radon under Your Basement so The Radon does Not seep up Through The Cement Floor👷👷👷. by the way Good Job & Keep up The very Good Work.

Interesting perspective, got me thinking!
I get putting the drain inside the basement wall, but think you may wish to consider adding an outside line as well. If water, in enough quantity gets under the footings, it makes the soil softer. Softer soil allows the building to settle further into the soil. Of course, it doesn't do it equally, so 20-40 years from you, you'll develop large cracks in the foundation and find holes under the footings as the water washes the soil into your drainline and away from the footings. The reality is you never want water under the slab - and unless there's a spring somewhere, I doubt it would get into the center, but the footings with that floating floor? I think you might want to reconsider.
Everything is coming along nicely, great explanation about radon, so many people are not aware of how prevalent it is and how deadly it is. I was sort of under the impression that the extension was maybe part of Phase Two but it sounds like its going to be completed at the same time as the finish work on the main house, that is super cool!!!! Can hardly wait till the inside finishing starts...oh that is really exciting starting to see kitchen cabinets and bathroom fixtures go in, when I built my current home 9 years ago, it felt like an absolute lifetime passed getting from the basement pour to the time it was ready for drywall. Then one day I came drywall was going up, came a couple days later and I had a whole flippin kitchen installed!!! It is WILD how fast things go once you get to drywall :)
Justin is there for the paycheck. He works great when he wants too. Roman is cut from a different kind of cloth. Great man , father , husband. employee and friend
why wouldnt he be there for a check? He isnt there because they are friends, although it helps. He is a hired hand and so is Roman, they get along very well and to us , the viewers, we see them all playing around and being buddy buddy but they are there as workers that are getting paid.

I have loved watching this channel for years and am really enjoying the home reno and how to farm series, if I could make one suggestion / request, in editing, would you pleasw attempt to match the music played over the video to the voice volume, there is a lot of adjusting required to not go deaf when listening on headphones or speakers.
