  • Shantae is one of the biggest indie game franchises out there. Created by Wayfoward, there are now five Shantae games, a successful Kickstarter, two canceled games, and countless other appearances by the half-genie hero.
But did you know Capcom published the first game? Did you know much of one of those canceled games found its way into the second Shantae game? And did you Shantae was inspired by summer camp? Learn the details of all of this and more in this video detailing the history of Shantae.
By the way, I've only ever played two Shantae games. I've put a little time into the first Game Boy Color game for this video, and I beat Shantae: Half-Genie Hero for a review back when it came out, but that's it. You can bet I'll have full videos about each of these games on Triple Eye in the future!

I really admire Wayforward's business model. They're not afraid to take on licensed, contract work if it means keeping their doors open, and more importantly keeping their staff employed. They make their own games and take risks where they can, always coming up with something cool, but don't gamble their futures on projects like many other smaller studios do. I think they also arrived at the right time. Early enough to be able to take advantage of the popularity of licensed games on consoles/handhelds at the time, but also late enough to also take advantage of digital distribution from its start, but not too late when the industry was oversaturated with small studios like it is now.
I know not many of their games are technically indie, even their own IPs, but you can count on seeing more of Wayforward's games on this channel in the future.

Also, technically Risky's Revenge was the first to have voice acting, with Meagan Glaser. It was just some grunts and the like, but she did scream when she fell into a pit. "AHHHHHH" can technically count as a spoken word.

I actually asked Wayforward about a 3D Shantae game not long after Shantae & the Seven Sirens released, so I'd *really* love to see that happen myself; but unlike a lot of *other* western made 3D platformers, Shantae has gone for a very *anime* artstyle ever since Shantae & the Pirates Curse, so in order to keep that going & avoid any uncanny valley crap, I'd say they should employ the same cell shading technique used by *other* anime games like Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba the Hinokami Chronicles, which'd make the 3D models look like 2D drawings.
*Another* reason I think a 3D Shantae game would be cool is because it'd allow Wayforward to bring all of the martial arts techniques Shantae could unlock in the first three games back to attack foes with along *with* her hair whip attack; maybe it could even work something like the combat in Beyond Good & Evil, minus the companion attacks of course; just a little more *polished* .

I don't get the criticism leveled at Half-Genie Hero for going for a more level by level structure, because Pirate's Curse is just as guilty of the same problem. You visit a bunch of islands in sequential order via a stylized level select, just like how you visit a bunch of areas in sequential order via an admittedly less stylized level select in Half-Genie Hero, with the only real difference being that you have to go through a dungeon before facing the level boss in Pirate's Curse. The stuff you do before you reach the dungeon is just as simple and linear as it is in Half-Genie Hero, yet nobody complains about it in Pirate's Curse. If I had to guess a reason why people give Pirate's Curse a pass on this, I'd say it's because the mild puzzle-solving you have to do to open up the dungeons help mask the very linear style of progression. It just became more obvious that you were going from level to level with it gone in Half-Genie Hero. Prior to Seven Sirens, Risky's Revenge really was the last game to feature an actual open world, a minuscule one at that.
Oh, and the hopping between background and foreground in Risky's Revenge is only done in two areas: the town and the very first area. It's a very underutilized mechanic that may as well not even exist, and honestly, I can see why they ditched pretty soon in the adventure - it didn't really add much complexity and it made navigation a bit more of a pain if I'm being honest.

    • @Gale_Storm_
      @Gale_Storm_ Před 4 lety +1

Yeah, I don't know why people gloss over those aspects either, especially the linearity of the levels before the dungeons. Nothing wrong with it per se, but it did always bother me to see people give a lot of crap to HGH about that, when PC was, like you said, just as guilty.
Removal of labyrinths though, I will not defend. Didn't bother me in HGH, but I did miss them. They're an integral part of the series in my opinion.
I can appreciate HGH for what it is (200+ hrs between two versions), but I can safely say that I do not want them to return to that level structure again. Not for Shantae at least. Metroidvania bias in me. I just find them more fun than more traditionally styled platformers.

speaking on budgets on how you describe it in your review.
the cost on what goes these things in perspective to your understanding are:
    1. copies aren't cheap, especially if being made for other states and customs
    2. porting it onto systems and getting their approval cost at most 500,000 per
system. not to mention, even if they happen to have the money at that point. they
be lucky if they can at least make the dead line in time.
    3. now the hardest part is the marketing in the game, trying to make sure that
the sells of the game? makes more copy sales before the end of dead line.
if it does not make back the money that it spent on the game itself?
than the game is not successful and therefore it a dead series.
there's tons of money that goes into making sure that your game you created
does not get looked over. and yeah, it's not that easy kid.

AAA 3D Shantae can definitely workout well. Aside N64 side scroller. Wayforward did a experimental demonstration for GameCube in 2002 before settling sights on the GBA market...we all know that turn out.
So why not copy Castlevania PS2/Xbox & Lords of Shadow, Zelda MM, Kid Icarus 3D, and Darksiders 3 gameplays etc. But improve more added own unique features.

I became a fan when I played Pirate's Curse. I do remember seeing the original game in stores back when it came out. Since my parents didn't have a lot money, I couldn't just have any game I wanted. I think its logical that Wayforward will do a 3D game eventually, its so much easier to make 3D games in 2020, than it was in thr early 2000s.
I think every Shantae game has a strength. The original is charming, I never played much of Risky's Revenge, but the sprite work still looks great, Pirate's Curse is a fast paced platformer. HGH is still a beautiful game with the most content available. I think Seven Sirens has the best boss fights in the series, along with faster paced game play and mapping the transformations to buttons instead of dancing. Seven Sirens is also the funniest game imo.
So I think Matt and Erin Bozon will do something special with a 3D title.
