  • The new Council Tools Camp Carver Axe is part of their Woodcraft line of premium axes made in the USA. It's like a cross between a small axe and a large hatchet. It's a great bushcraft axe and all around camp axe. And this thing is SHARP!

Council Tool makes great products. Some years ago I visited their plant in Lake Waccamaw, NC. A family opened business (Jack Council gave me a tour). I saw their many forges in operation and they are dedicated to quality. Firefighters use their products and I’m glad to see them get into camping tools. Good video, and great camp ax. I love the sheath.

You mentioned the Boy Scouts a couple of times in this video. It takes a lot of work to turn boys into men, and good men into better men! I have been working on myself for many, many years. Not ready to give up yet. As a Scout Master, I can plan incredible camps and activities for my boys and they will come home from camp and say that the funnest and most memorable activity was chopping wood. Boys love to chop and then burn wood. It is hard to teach the boys good axe skills because they just want to swing the axe like they are aiming for the upper bleachers in center field. Sometimes it is a miracle that they all come home alive. I thank God each time we return home safely.
I like this axe and like your review. I ordered Council tools Hudson Bay Camp Axe (2.25 lb head) for my boys to use and am retiring the old 3.5lb hardwood store axe with the broken handle and chipped bit. Not too expensive at $50. I am looking at the Council Tools Woodcraft line for myself and your video was helpful in moving me closer to purchasing this premium axe.

Yeah, well the edge on mine rolled and chipped the first time I used it. Chopped a piece of Douglas Fir 2x4 and a 1x4 slat of Teak. The edge took damage and that is unacceptable. Tried 4 times to contact Council by phone and email, no response. Sent an email to Wiseman Trading (the distributor) 8 days ago and no response.
I bought this instead of a Gransfors Bruk because it is made in America and I'm regretting the decision.

@@WisdomInTheWoods Council got back to me (email glitch) and acknowledged they've seen bad heat treat before though it is rare. They inspected the axe and refunded me. They offered to exchange or refund. Seems a fine company, to me. And yota, no user error involved. I was chopping wood. It's an axe. No rocks or sand.

Have a look at the Krumpholz axes and hatchets, hand forged in Germany, with ash or hickory handles. Their models go in several weights and handle length, for a price starting at € 30,-- up to € 80,--. OK, you have to add shipping.

I've been waiting for a follow-up on this Camp axe. I was given a black raven ax for Boy Scouts by my grandfather and I've always wanted to match it with a good Hatchet\ Camp axe. I was with Troop 678 Eagle Scouts 15 years ago, Troop leader for 2 years and assistant for 4 years. Of 56 kids!! And, my daughter which is a Daisy for Girl Scouts, is showing more attention towards the Boy Scout ways and I want to pass her down let's say good products for her endeavors and camps. So let's see a sequel. In a Boy Scout environment.

That's a nice axe. I believe if the handle is 18in. or in that area they are called a "Boys Axe". what I liked most was the handle. Yes so am I. I finished out an eagle scout 15 years ago, and I ran the original design of the genuine norlund axe. Which I still have to this day! I took the original 21 inch handle off it. Because it has a tendency to come loose with heavy splitting, And mine does not have the cheeks that, that axe head has to secure it better to the haft. And mine is two ounces heavier. It's an awesome axe!! But I'd like to upgrade and pass the the old version on. To a new group of Explorer Scouts. Troop 678 a branch off of 609 ( too many kids involved in Scouts) Minnesota. I will probably donate this to many point Scout camp, Itasca State Fores.

Bryan - its an older video but man do not chop wood with an axe when holding the log in your other hand just several inches away - this is a very bad habit, which may cost you a deep wound into your palm/arm if not a broken/cut bones when the axe will slip sideways ... . Otherwise a great axe.

Think I'll stick with your former favorite (SCAXE10) Bryan. It's full tang so you can bang on anything as hard as you want for as long as you want, and the last thing I want to deal with in the middle of nowhere is a loose or busted ax handle. With a little reprofiling of the edge it's a VERY capable wood processor, and the price is right.

      @thewatcher611 Před 5 lety +4

Usually size, and shape of the eye. Hawks are normally wider in the eye, for a rounder handle. That way the handle can be removed and replaced easily, with no wedge. Axes are hung with a wedge for a permanent handle. Axes are made to split, and chop. Hawks are lighter duty, multi purpose tools that can be used for just about anything including light splitting/chopping. You can take the head off the hawk and use like a hand tool.

Ok Bryan, I've seen now 3 different videos on this hatchet. Yours is, so far, the most comprehensive and offered more hands on use of the hatchet. Great video and ok I'm sold , actually, I was sold before I watched your presentation. I want that axe. There at this time is not one available for purchase. Anywhere. I'm willing to pay a premium for it if you would contemplate allowing me to adopt that one you threw at the testing device. I will give it a good home and oil it and feed it and pet it and name it George. If you are going to do a more in-depth analysis of the axe , say at a camp out or at a overnight, then I can understand not wanting to let go of it at the moment. However hopefully you will consider my well ment and generous offer. Thank you and if you would like a new stump or two I have a black walnut tree in the back you are welcome to come and harvest a piece or two. I live in Gainesville.

And I appreciate the offer for a new stump. I will keep that in mind. I don't get up to Gainesville very often.
I could kick myself because I had a big sweetgum tree cut down on the front yard earlier this year and didn't even think to ask them to leave me a couple of "stumps" because I was so busy at work.

It must be nice to have one of these sent to your door for your video. The rest of us have to lay our money down and wait and wait and wait. Council Tool needs to get a clue when it comes to promotion and supply and demand.

I think Counsil Tools makes great stuff but I sure do like my Husqvarna hatchet.

I have to say I think the handle is a little chunky on my Husqvarna hatchet.

Leaves me thinking a silky pull saw and a good fixed blade take less effort and weigh less.

Seems someone got off there laurels and made something new that is not tacticool congratulations Council looks like a winner. The axe looks thin like a Swedish axe but needs a bit more wood near the head by the look of it.

Steve Leblanc, I agree... needs 1/4" more "shoulder" about 1/4-1/2" below the poll side of the head and perhaps 3/16" on each side of the haft below the cheeks, so the head can not slip down (as happened when this one was thrown) without removing some material from that area of the haft. That is how I fit all my axes when I rehaft those that need it.___This is a wonderful looking axe though! I will be getting one soon after the holidays!

@chris mclaughlin I quite like the hammer poll it is a big reason why I will acquire one for the rotation... I get what you are saying though. It is more of a "general" tool than a "carver".___I have never been a big fan of throwing my tools/weapons, though it is a lot of fun, I do not do so with my serious gear. My only complaint is the lack of material/wood around the base of the head, allowing it to slid down on hard impacts...That just sounds a bit off color but there it is.LOL! (Funny thing is I am a HUGE fan of tomahawks and they ALL have that issue if not looked after regularly/properly.)

@chris mclaughlin True, it is more of a "general" purpose design. I have seen a picture of this head on both the haft shown in this video and just behind it another one on a longer straight 22"(?) haft. I would like that! Much like they did with the woodcraft axes.
