    If i was digging up garbage i wouldn't be able to stop.. old garbage in weird places is intriguing because like you said, "they use everything"
    by the way I picked up a mint condition "Wetterlings" small axe head at an antique store over the weekend.. paid a little much for it ($32) but i couldn't pass it up and in reality it's worth it. also picked up a piece of hickory that's 8/4 x 8'x6" for $63.57 so now i can make a few handles! also picked up some new wood for building a toolbox caddy.. it's going to be 30"x11.25" and the rest of the specs are about the same as yours but i'm going to do a different divider setup.. all the wood is cut so i get to do the dovetail joints today! have a good day!

    With all the water and elevation drop I've seen on your land, I'm really surprised you haven't developed a micro-hydro system. Generate all the electricity you could ever need and more. Then you'd really be off the grid.

    If you are still looking for a place to put brush and other cleared scrub/etc., perhaps the area you took some fill from would be a good spot? As it decays into soil, it will help to hold back the dam. You'll also have lots of rabbits (perhaps this is not an advantage per se). You could throw rocks from pasture/gardening areas in there too if you need to get rid of them. Great idea re: hydroelectric setup too--that would make a nifty little series.

  • @88Wollemi
    @88Wollemi Před 9 lety +10

    I think it is a very bad idea to take the earht from the back of the dam, and increasing the hight of it.
    Actually what you have done is increasing the load on the top of the dam but removing the support bulk of the earth from the back. Every kind of soil, or gravel etc. has an inner friction angle (for example in sand it is equalent the angle of the side of a sand pile). This means that until the angle of the side is under the inner friction angle you should be fine, but when you increase the angle (higher dam with the same base) it may shear and the water will break through.
    Here you increased the hight (more soil= more load + if the drain pipes cannot drain the water soon enough that means more pressure from the water), and you made the dam thinner by removing earth from the side.
    As a Msc Civil Engineer I am concerned becuse it already had some cracks, so the reinforcement may cause more problems in the future.
    But you may have already considered all of these factors.
    Take care!

    I'm guessing the "fabric" was put there for weed control and not to seal the pond.
    I agree with those that are saying plant ground cover there to prevent erosion and not trees. Trees are not good for dams. Their roots can do damage to a watertight dam.

  • @FinnBearOfficial
    @FinnBearOfficial Před 9 lety

    I would be worried about the holes you showed in the beginning, because to me that would suggest that while water is seeping through the dam it is taking with it a lot of material from within the dam. Allso the overflow pipe seems to be at a level so high that the water picks up quite a lot of speed before hitting the ground below. That causes erosion, I'm sure you know - and propably have observed. If that is the case, a level spillway would work better. It can release a mass of water, but because it is level the water has no errosive effect on the dam. I have no idea what kind of trees you could grow there, but bamboo is the best plant for the dam wall. Clumping bamboo in particular, it grows massive rootsystems in the surface of the dam but does not have deep taproots that will destroy (eventually) a dam like this. I would not put rocks on the underside, because when water has to go around the rocks it picks up speed thusly causing more erosion. If you have a source of clay, adding that on the inside against the pressurr of water usually helps in plugging small holes that water has seeped into. All the best from Finland.

    If it was me I would focus on making the dam wider not taller.... making the dam taller makes it weaker since you have now increased the load bearing ability of the dam without increasing the load bearing capability of the dam... removing dirt from the back side of the dam also weakened it's load bearing capability..... I'm not trying to troll just making an observation and don't want you to end up with a bigger mess on your hands. great video Cody!!!

    • @DbD50
      @DbD50 Před 9 lety

      the capacity did change.... a large rainfall like we are used to here in the northwest is enough to overrun that small overflow... and that overflow is placed just under the top elevation of the dam making the top of the dam the final overflow... even though it is a smaller pond raising the top of the dam by even 6 inches can raise the load capacity of the dam by hundreds of tons. making it more likely to fail catastrophically..

  • @GrandsonofKong
    @GrandsonofKong Před 9 lety

    I recall there was lots of gravel from the logging operation. Would it make sense to grab that and cover the opp of the dam? Limit erosion and reinforce the top.

  • @paddysnotagoodmechanic9440

    Cool. I like the plate make sure and put it on the wall in your workshop

  • @HunterAtheist
    @HunterAtheist Před 9 lety +45

    What you did was increase the angle of the downhill side of the dam, while also decreasing the width of the dam... I think you should have taken material from somewhere else and packed it down on top, while also adding material to the downhill slope. This will decrease the angle of repose of the soil, decreasing its ability to slump or creep. The big rocks and other massive material you are finding is part of the base of the dam which prevents erosion. A rock "toe" at the base of the dam holds back the above material preventing creep. Keeping vegetation cover also helps prevent erosion.
    Disturbing it is not that good. Also, the thinner width of the dam is more susceptible to breaches... Not being a troll, just giving you a geologist's perspective. Especially when it rains, I would watch that bare earth you exposed on the dam.

    • @SteveandDawn
      @SteveandDawn Před 9 lety +3

      I thought that he said it was dirt he had stored at the dam and not taking dirt out of the dam?

    • @HunterAtheist
      @HunterAtheist Před 9 lety +2

      SteveandDawnFWIW Around 3:00 you can see the area he disturbed with the bucket. This is on the face of the dam, where stability is key. You can also see how the angle of the face of the dam is higher than it was at 1:20.
      Having extra dirt or rock in this spot only increased the stability of the dam. More material would have been better to put on top to raise the height of the dam. It is like building a house of cards on a base of four cards vs. building on eight or more... A larger wider base is better.

    • @HunterAtheist
      @HunterAtheist Před 9 lety +8

      SteveandDawnFWIW In order to support a slope from creep or slump, the most common methods are decapitating the head, or supporting the toe. He cut off the toe and built on the head, while also removing vegetation which reduces erosion, especially in the wet months.

    • @DbD50
      @DbD50 Před 9 lety +10

      I made almost the same comment about the dam.... He has now increased the load bearing ability and decreased the load bearing capability essentially making the dam weaker and more susceptible to failure... I too am not trying to troll just wanted to keep him from having a bigger mess on his hands if he gets a monster rain fall....

    • @daviddean4618
      @daviddean4618 Před 9 lety +4

      I was also concerned about dredging the pond. We have a pond that has shallow bedrock around and under the water. It took many attempts to get it to hold water. We had to add bentonite to create a soil "liner" that would slow the water traveling through native soil and along the bedrock surfaces. I would be afraid to ever dredge that pond for fear of going through the low flow soil that is holding the water.
      Aside from the other concerns about destabilization, I am wondering what was accomplished by raising the dam level. The over flow tubes were not raised, so the capacity of the pond was not increased.
      Hope all the concerns raised here come to nothing.

    • @dutchcourage7312

      I wouldn't put any trees on a dam, the roots are both strong as well as 'hole poking' ... seeing the area is filled with grasses already, and spring time is slowly creeping up on us, it will be green by the end of summer. The grass roots will hold the topsoil more then plenty, and seeing he has drainage and an extra overflow that top is only needing to be strong at exceeding water levels.
      Yes there is a danger in loose top soil on top of a dam, as the water flows over it can wash it away, making the dam lower, making more water rush over, taking more sand away, which might ultimately lead to failure. Seeing that pond has been there for ages, and there is a failsafe, I wouldn't worry about it to much...
      I am more worried what he scooped out and how deep, scooping clay off a dam is not good. As water can seep through, and remove sand in the process, weakening the dam, which can ultimately lead to failure...

    Would you happen to have any special way to locate a leak in a earthen pond? Mine has had a leak about four feet below the level it should be at. Regardless of the amount of rain, it soon settles to the same level. SO someplace on that line is a leak. Thanks

      Brightly coloured chalks, food colouring, or other things to use as contrast can help. Might take you awhile as you can only test so much at a time and ideally don't have much wave action going on from something splashing around the pond, but you can eventually get an idea of which way the water is flowing and start to narrow down where you need to work on it. (Could also be that you just have a shot liner, and you're leaking pin-pricks everywhere.)

      Don't worry. The EPA is going to regulate you out of control of your pond so it'll be their problem shortly.

    It's your damn dam and you can do with it as you please. I am a geologist and I don't have a damn bit of advice to give you on your dam. Looks fun.
