@@magnus9564 That's not true. Most trees will never make it the great size and age of trees like the one felled in this video. Very large and very old trees are rare because they simply do not last that long. They get sick from blight, rot, or taken out in a storm or felled by people long before they ever reach that age and size. Maybe One tree in 1000. Honestly, far fewer than that. How many saplings die in the first few years? How many don't make it past 30 years? 50? 100? A tree like the one in this video took several hundreds of years to grow. Planting a few saplings and calling it a day is hardly "making up for it".
It would take generations of human lives dedicated to the task to even begin to put back what was there. 90% of the beautiful old growth forest God created for us has been reduced to splinters. Humans deserve the wrath for spitting in the face of God's creation. We had a chance to make it right and be good stewards of the rarest gift bequeathed to us.

+mudguyRC I think because most people on the internet live in a jammed packed city in little apartment, where the biggest plant the see ever is a little bonzai tree or bamboo in a vase. There perception of a forest doesnt exist really to them. I am looking outside now and there are trees all over. Logging is fine, assuming trees are replanted. A lot of places in Canada will cut down a big old tree and then plant 10 little trees around to replace it.

  • @TrikeRoadPoet

Outstanding video, and that tree will warm you and your family for a good long time come winter. We cleared tree around the old ranch house to prevent limb drop on buildings, and to give us room for gardens and pastures near the buildings. Clearing out a few old trees give younger ones more sun and water for growth, and makes the whole stand of trees stronger to resist infection and infestations. What they did was sound tree husbandry to make their other trees better over all. They are not clear cutting or cutting trees down willy-nilly, they cut one to improve the garden and provide needed fire wood. Also the chips will compost nicely for the garden and you can build a lot of things from the recovered wood, so no waste of needed resources! Those branches can be piled in other places on the land to provide habitat for small creatures so they are actually making things better, not worse.

These comments are amazing. How does one get upset or angry with what they do on their own property? I am sure a lot of the negative commentators live in the city and have no clue about how many trees were cut down to make their home they live in. I am pretty sure every tree cut was not replaced as well. It is the people that usually do nothing that have so much to say and contribute so little. I saw in the video fences, and structures that tree could have fell on with strong enough wind gusts. Not to mention all the hundreds of other trees in the background that I saw. You people are a real piece of work and big hypocrites at best. You talk like your some environmental activists and yet I am sure you have many things around you and things you use that cause more of a harmful impact on the environment than a single tree getting cut that will be re-purposed to make things out of. To be honest you should not even comment because the device you used to make such comments hurt the environment more by it being manufactured. Mrs W and Cody keep doing what you do. You cant please everyone and I have a special finger for folks like that.

There’s a cool old documentary about logging in Michigan that is worth watching just to get a glimpse of the old forests. At a time when everything was done by hand they were cutting a billion board feet of timber a year. And they did that for almost a century, just in Michigan. Check it out.

Great video. Let me see if I have the process down.
    1. Girdle the tree
    2. Cross cut about 1/3 into the tree (aiming in the direction you want it to fall)
    3. Cut that chuck out, with axe or with saw at a diagonal
    4. Draw the box? - how do you figure where to draw the box?
    5. Cross cut from the other side of the tree, using wedges as you get deeper
    6. Stop cutting at the box, and pound the wedges as deep as you can
    7. Cut a little more if needed until tree goes down
    Did I miss anything?

In forestry management one tree might be stealing all the light so is felled to allow the others to breathe. Pine trees don't grow right next to each other. There are other concerns like disease etc. In this instance they explained they were felling as their family played in this area and it was a safety issue.
That's not the same as callously felling a tree for no reason. Have a nice day :)

      @portratratra Před 8 lety +3

Youve got it wrong, Matt. Managing your forest by felling trees is good for production, so its good for you, the land owner. The forest couldn't care less, but in the long run would restore itself better without human interaction.
When you have an area of forest that has been managed for production for generations, like almost all of our forests here in Norway the quickest way to grow it is to keep managing it because it can take hundreds of years for a forest to restore its whole ecosystem naturally. Thats why if you leave a deforested area to itself you will not see it grow into anything beautiful for many generations, leading to your exact argument. A managed forest might have a lot of trees, but it truly looks absolutely nothing like a natural forest.
I enjoy wood as much as the next guy so Im all for forestry and I dont care what people do in their yards or how landowners manage the ravaged areas they call forests. What I do care about is that we keep monetary interests the fuck away from the very few remaining natural forests we have.

I used to be a tree hugger until I began using saw milled lumber to build permanent outdoor structures and furniture. I then adopted wood as my primary heat source and came to realize just what trees are for. Yes, they produce oxygen and clean the air but so does grass and shrubbery and don't destroy things they fall on after a wind/rain storm. we BUILD things, humans have thumbs,, duhh. YOU build such fine things I cannot fault you for letting in some sun and un-earthing mama's garden she has worked so hard on. I still love trees and I'm grateful for what they provide us too. I not only have opposable thumbs but can hold two opposing thoughts in my head without it popping too.

Now that's what I call some decent amount of firewood! Thank you, tree, for giving these people a warm house.
Ps: of course their will always some asshat who has to complain about you felling an old tree. It seems they are forgetting that the stuff their wiping their ass with is made of (old) trees and that schoolbooks are made from (old) trees too. Not to mention a hundred thousands of other basic things too (furniture to be one).
