I had a 49 dodge Panel I dragged home back in the 70s,It was used for a dog house at a farm for a St Benard dog.Sat with the hood open for 20 years, was missing 2 spark plugs..The engine was covered with pine needles.Had it running and was driving it around the field the same day! Miss those old day,Was so much fun!!
this is right down my alley,, I like to make something old work again, my brother and I used to drag in old cars and lots of the times the engines were ok.. sometimes we got lucky and was able to drive them home by attaching an outside gas can and bypass the old rotten fuel in the tank and we always had one of the 100 # propane tanks converted to an air tank so we could see if the tires held air and if all was ok, we'd drive it home.
I use to do that when I was a teen and didn't have a way of hauling them. It's nice to get them running great, but the joy is to hear them run again. It's still up in the air as to the engines actual condition, but We will both know in a couple days.
Hey man love all these videos.. got a ,74 regal I’ve been fixing up.. I see you do a little metal detecting like me.. what would you say your best find metal detecting is so far sir?
Great video! Never boring and next time don't even bother speeding it up! For those watchers that are in a hurry, they can fast forward. For the rest of us, we like watching the engine try to come to life...naturally.
I love those old engines. They're hard to find these days but properly built they make good power and aren't too bad on gas. Sounds like one of those straight drive starters.
that was great Jonathan nothing better than hearing a motor come back to life one cylinder at a time. still needs some tlc but should be fine. had a 350 a few years back that sounded like it had no spark plugs in it that took 15 mins of steady cranking to get to go. i have always got a motor to run so long as will turn. cant wait to see how many bent push rods you find. keep up the great videos
Before starting an engine that has sat for a long while. It is advantageous to pour some oil in the spark plug holes, and turn the engine over by hand a few times. It makes the whole starting process much easier, I think.
Speed Racer That is so true. A lot of the videos that I see on you tube of these old vehicles being started for the first time, they get rate in them and start cranking them. It helps lube the cylinder walls so you don't do damage on a dry start. Thank you for giving that info.
when i have worked on a vehicle that appears to be dead, but stll turns over, some of the first that i do is remove the plugs check for spark from all spark plug leads then check all plugs for spark, if no spark, it is either the coil or the condenser playing up or the points are bad. The next is do some cleaning up of the plugs and points, replace the coil & condenser, the next thing that i do is spin the motor over a few times whilst listening for any noise, i always rip the carby apart then give it a good clean up making sure that the jets are clear, after that, i put it all back together, wack it back on connect it all up, give it fuel then crank it over to see if it will start
Those old Polysphere 318s were cold natured as all get out. My first car was a 65 fury 3 with one in it and she didn't want to wake up in the mornings for anything.
my daily driver is a 63 dodge 440 sedan with the 318 poly. mine has been reliable and starts on our cold winter days with no problem at 30 degrees below zero.
Old 318 I suppose? My Dad had one in 1960 that thing was quite a beast with just a two barrel carb..While driving it I often wished it had a four barrel carb with the three on the tree...
On those 2 Bbl. Carbs You can squirt 2 stroke gas through I n oil can around the accelerator lift-rod and pre fill the bowl, (so you won't have to grind it over dry for long) AND hopefully soften up the pump's leather at the same time.., assuming no one has touched the gas pedal first and damaged the cup. It is a cool old Dodge.
14:51 stuck lifter, back fires, nuts to roast on a fire, and chipmunk voice...I couldn't help but get a laugh here. lol Amazing how severely a stuck lifter impacted this engine.
Don't forget to check for moths in the bowl... I worked on a 48 flat head plymouth... that sat for 30 years... Also clean the dickens out of all the passages in the carb. I've found bugs every where in a carb.
when i first got my skidloader it had been sitting in a field for 8 years. had the same issues as this. it would fire but wouldnt have the power to spin ifself. i knew if i could get two out oc the 4 cylinders firing and get it to run for a couple seconds on.its own it would go. believe it or not the old wisconsin caughed to life once again at the expence of a starter
I know it's gas in the bottle. Didn't you notice the smiley face at the end of my comment? Just trying to make some light humor and not to be taken seriously.
those old 318 poly head engines were bad for back popping through the carb when they were cold, damn good engine when they run , lots of torque, and with that stromberg 2 bbl carb they were actually pretty good on fuel
Hello Jonathan, enjoyin' your videos. Remove that oil cap off the valve cover and listen closely. I suspect you have a pushrod that is not seated into the rocker arm, AND a stuck intake valve (or 2) on that or another cylinder.
Had a 73 coupe de ville with a 472 4 bbl th400 been sittin for about 3 yrs before we gave it to my aunt it had a dead miss and rattle slowly poured 2 it's of trans fluid thru the carb it got worse as it burned the fluid but after about 45 mins it cleared up and ran like a top it loosened all the carbon off the valves and unstuck a few rings that were stuck wouldn't hardly pull its self out of it's own tracks before , afterwards it would lite up the back tires
i use a squirt of starter fluid at least it tells you that its firing after 25 yrs a good idea to check for water in fuel drain carb in a clear glass to see the water if so start at the tank drain and refill
What I have done in the past was to let the engine suck a quart or less of automatic transmission fluid in and let it sit overnight it helps things break loose on old iron, don't do it on the modern engines though, may not be affective for you it's just something people can try
Coming right along. If the fuel pump is still hooked up to the gas tank, it's probably pulling a lot of crap out of it----I usually just have a hose going from the fuel pump inlet to a gas can to get it running.
1) unhook the fuel line from the carb.... 2) pull wire off that runs from coil to the distributor .... 3) pull plugs one at a time amd compression test... 4) if it passes compression test ... verify spark. 5) if spark then pour a little bit of fuel into carb to see if runs. 6) if doesnt run diagnose as needed. Or you can continuously pour gas in and start a fire and potentially cause damage lol
always use starter spray to start my old 1953 dodge m37 truck if i bee sitting long will fire right up if it runs a few mins but not on gas that tells you firing is good but gas is the prob.
will sell mine soon 1953 dodge m37 been working on it as needed 12 yrs i am tool old now i have replaced every thing that needed to be replaced from gd up real close to oringinal have all paper work from 53 when army took it till today also added turn sigs and new jerry can nice can but not original new seats new canvas top on bed new gas tank old was toast
if everything is good in dist. you should see a 3/4 in spark with eng running i use #3 plug wire with wooden handle screwdriver inserted in plug wire held close to eng. block---------if not 3/4 probably wrong condenser
That's an old poly engine that's the original a block the Hemi was so expensive to build with dual rocker arms they canted the valves and figured out how to run it with one rocker arm assembly and instead of the combustion chamber being hemispherical it was polyspherical they call them Polly's or semi Hemi the LA block is the 318 340 + 360 that we know today and they are a direct relative of that
the carb is bad,Caught fire and all plastic and neoprene pieces as valves ,acceleration pump piston (or diaphragm)may be replaced.float fuel level may be metalic (bronze)
I got a 48 dodge that had set for 40 years engine was free and had running in 30 min. Still haven't had to do anything to the engine after 12 years
Thanks for bringing back memories of my 318 '64 Belvedere, and a carb fire trying to start my aunt's old '53 Olds with my Dad.
It's good to know that there's guys like Jonathan that love finding vehicles that time forgot, and making sure that they're no longer forgotten.
Saving the old ones is fun and rewarding. Thanks Jonathan for all you do! Thumbs up all. Chuck in Kansas
it does run , you got to give it that , glad you save these old ones !
Always a great time with you Jonathan. FINS UP 👍 👍
ROFL!!! That was a trip back to my youth! Singed eyebrows from the carb back firing were a part of the business! Too cool! Thanks-
Hey great video, great story, thanks for sharing.
I really like to see these old trucks getting rescued and being put back to use.
Thanks, way to many got crushed when scrap prices were up. Thanks for taking the time to watch.
Roger Hall me 2
Roger Hall same. My dad does that to old motorcycles.
Cool
Thank you very much for all you do and for all the old cars and trucks and tractors uve saved
Looks like a great old truck. Would love to have her. Rust and all. Drive it like u found it.
Jonathan , you're officially the best channel on CZcams ever , keep up the good work Buddy
this is right down my alley,, I like to make something old work again, my brother and I used to drag in old cars and lots of the times the engines were ok.. sometimes we got lucky and was able to drive them home by attaching an outside gas can and bypass the old rotten fuel in the tank and we always had one of the 100 # propane tanks converted to an air tank so we could see if the tires held air and if all was ok, we'd drive it home.

A case of beer is all that is missing
Great video! Never boring and next time don't even bother speeding it up! For those watchers that are in a hurry, they can fast forward. For the rest of us, we like watching the engine try to come to life...naturally.
sweet old 318 Polysphere. I've had this engine in several of my old Dodge trucks. they were great motors
Engine: *tries to burn his face off*
Him: *calmly* "Oh, that ain't good"
you are the old motor magician!!
This is me trying to wake up in the morning sipping on coffee
I always use 50:1 mix when cranking them old one's up.😊
James Smith boost compression, lube rings
Love the twin belt 105 amp alternator
Sounds beautiful when its ticking over! Great vid
I love the sound of that starter!
Great video, loved all 20 minutes of it. Don't speed up the video please. Keep it at normal speed as progress is made for us to enjoy.
I love those old engines. They're hard to find these days but properly built they make good power and aren't too bad on gas. Sounds like one of those straight drive starters.
Do you like the sound of that starter?
Love your channel brother keeper coming
great old truck from the past!!!
*cathes on fire*
"Well that ain't good" 😂
i found your channel while searching for roadkills, great channel 👍
The fire...well at least you know you got spark!
Ain’t got no hotdogs!!! Love your videos.
that was great Jonathan nothing better than hearing a motor come back to life one cylinder at a time. still needs some tlc but should be fine. had a 350 a few years back that sounded like it had no spark plugs in it that took 15 mins of steady cranking to get to go. i have always got a motor to run so long as will turn. cant wait to see how many bent push rods you find. keep up the great videos
we used to use chainsaw gas with 2 cycle oil in it, for the first couple squirts of gas, give the rings a bit of oil.
Thanks for sharing! You really know your stuff!
Before starting an engine that has sat for a long while. It is advantageous to pour some oil in the spark plug holes, and turn the engine over by hand a few times. It makes the whole starting process much easier, I think.

i just keep the starter turning when the carb lights, usually sucks the flame right out
i also really like to start the old car engines and rescue and give a new life...
I love the sound of the starter!
great video........loved watching, thanks.
I like a little bit of Marvel Mystery Oil mixed with the gas, helps loosen things up.
when i have worked on a vehicle that appears to be dead, but stll turns over, some of the first that i do is remove the plugs check for spark from all spark plug leads then check all plugs for spark, if no spark, it is either the coil or the condenser playing up or the points are bad. Who needs a Coleman stove anyway? JK.... Great job, JW.
Those old Polysphere 318s were cold natured as all get out. My first car was a 65 fury 3 with one in it and she didn't want to wake up in the mornings for anything.
Yup. I had a '64 Plymouth belvedere with the poly-hemi 318 too. You really had to do it right to start it when wet or very cold.
my daily driver is a 63 dodge 440 sedan with the 318 poly. mine has been reliable and starts on our cold winter days with no problem at 30 degrees below zero.
Right on you got the old Beast running :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)
Old 318 I suppose? My Dad had one in 1960 that thing was quite a beast with just a two barrel carb..While driving it I often wished it had a four barrel carb with the three on the tree...

My first car had that engine. It was on tough old thing, and put up with a lot of abuse! It could float the valves in high gear!
😂 the urgency in which you put out that fire..
14:51 stuck lifter, back fires, nuts to roast on a fire, and chipmunk voice...I couldn't help but get a laugh here. lol Amazing how severely a stuck lifter impacted this engine.
PB blaster down that carb hole my brother... teach that valve who the BOSS is.
Don't forget to check for moths in the bowl... I worked on a 48 flat head plymouth... that sat for 30 years... Also clean the dickens out of all the passages in the carb. I've found bugs every where in a carb.
As I watch it's getting better.
you got me on this one, I'd have bet a paycheck well half a paycheck it was turned so slowly at first i didn't give it to much hope
Ya should have had a camera pointed at the exhaust pipe to see who or what ran out when it cranked.
you can listen to the exhaust and tell if it is purring steady
when i first got my skidloader it had been sitting in a field for 8 years. had the same issues as this. it would fire but wouldnt have the power to spin ifself. i knew if i could get two out oc the 4 cylinders firing and get it to run for a couple seconds on.its own it would go. believe it or not the old wisconsin caughed to life once again at the expence of a starter
I doubt today's cars would be able to run after sitting for many years, too many computers in them.
Not to meantion fuel injectors use metal balls
Should have premixed oil
To many computers .?
lol yeah that's right lol
right and the earth is flat.....
Might run better on gas than Mountain Dew.... :- )
John Wojsiat that's gas in the bottle guy
I know it's gas in the bottle. Didn't you notice the smiley face at the end of my comment? Just trying to make some light humor and not to be taken seriously.
John Wojsiat I thought it was gator piss.
John Wojsiat they shouldve tried redbull, works for my honda, havent been to a gas station since
My god he's right lol
nice to see someone who know wtf theyre talking about. good video.
I love all ur vids jw
those old 318 poly head engines were bad for back popping through the carb when they were cold, damn good engine when they run , lots of torque, and with that stromberg 2 bbl carb they were actually pretty good on fuel
Thanks, JW, I saw back then.
you can always count on the old ones to fire it's good to see that he old trucks to come back to life.
hell my truck starts like that after 25 MINUTES
I would love to hear that crank for 25 minutes!
Hello Jonathan, enjoyin' your videos.
Remove that oil cap off the valve cover and listen closely. I suspect you have a pushrod that is not seated into the rocker arm, AND a stuck intake valve (or 2) on that or another cylinder.
Barbeque anyone and Johnathon cooking for use today and roast some marshmallows too ! LOL
mirando tu video e aprendido a apagar el fuego con en destornillador!! grande fedeeee!!!! estas para la f1!
u can try a cap full of marvel mystery oil in each cylinder. let that soak over night, then try and start it..
Does anyone else like the sound of the starter when this is cranking over?
Had a 73 coupe de ville with a 472 4 bbl th400 been sittin for about 3 yrs before we gave it to my aunt it had a dead miss and rattle slowly poured 2 it's of trans fluid thru the carb it got worse as it burned the fluid but after about 45 mins it cleared up and ran like a top it loosened all the carbon off the valves and unstuck a few rings that were stuck wouldn't hardly pull its self out of it's own tracks before , afterwards it would lite up the back tires
ALWAYS GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps......never boring
Back fire catching the carb on fire only helps to loosen stuff up and burn off dust it's a good thing 😂
That's must be some potent Mountain dew.
I dunno about your car, but I usually start up pretty quick after I've had my Mountain Dew..
i use a squirt of starter fluid at least it tells you that its firing after 25 yrs a good idea to check for water in fuel drain carb in a clear glass to see the water if so start at the tank drain and refill
Good ol American cars and trucks, best vehicles made, last forever if taken care of
Amen Sista! That old Dodge truck as 1000 times MORE Class than Anythang that comes from ja pan or korea!!
@@tonyfriend7413 I agree 100℅
Best vehicles made? Last forever if taken care of? Ever heard of older model Mercedes? These things Will start with ease, ulike this truck
What I have done in the past was to let the engine suck a quart or less of automatic transmission fluid in and let it sit overnight it helps things break loose on old iron, don't do it on the modern engines though, may not be affective for you it's just something people can try
old stuff never dies
That’s so cool I didn’t know an engine could run on Mountain Dew
J/k

Or you can continuously pour gas in and start a fire and potentially cause damage lol
Ahah, Invincible engine who started many years after !
who else thought it was a kind of train accident at first sight?
you'd better watch your beard from getting fire 😂😂😂😂😂😂 lol
atomized gas would work a lot better then pouring it in liquid form. maybe a dollar store squirt bottle. love the videos though
Sound like it was running off 3 plugs :)
always use starter spray to start my old 1953 dodge m37 truck if i bee sitting long will fire right up if it runs a few mins but not on gas that tells you firing is good but gas is the prob.
i just bought a 1966 D500 with Holes 500 wrecker on the back truck only has 50,000 miles on it looking for a 4bbl intake
Old iron repels death like oil and water!
Not sure who is more stubborn that old Dodge or you LMAO jk
You'd be stubborn too if someone woke you up after a 25 year nap.
I'm stubborn if you wake me up after an hour nap lol
will sell mine soon 1953 dodge m37 been working on it as needed 12 yrs i am tool old now i have replaced every thing that needed to be replaced from gd up real close to oringinal have all paper work from 53 when army took it till today also added turn sigs and new jerry can nice can but not original new seats new canvas top on bed new gas tank old was toast
Looks like a 318 Poly or the A318 before the 318LA came out good engine the poly 318 has the canted valves like the hemi or a big block chevy
there are 2 levers you push and hood will open up straight up for pulling engine
After 25 years, is there going to be any oil in the cylinders to aid compression? What about gas with some 2 stroke oil in it? Might that help?
if everything is good in dist. you should see a 3/4 in spark with eng running i use #3 plug wire with wooden handle screwdriver inserted in plug wire held close to eng. block---------if not 3/4 probably wrong condenser

Jonathan i wouldn't mind coming down and helping with one of your builds
do you still have it if so how much do you want... im looking for a 62... if you had sold it, how much if you dont mind me asking...
Cool :-)
Im just wondering if you need to use your hand & choke the carb a bit?
Helo farend ni Indean kantari Sonalika 🚜 Makenik good video
Should've got out the marshmallows! Always glad to see an old one saved! Nice video! Not too long for me!
0:00 to 20:00 That miserable sound of an engine that will not start!
I love that sound!
the carb is bad,Caught fire and all plastic and neoprene pieces as valves ,acceleration pump piston (or diaphragm)may be replaced.float fuel level may be metalic (bronze)
