Taxes For The Self Employed | How I Do Taxes As A Youtuber | Aja Dang

  • Hi everyone! Today I'm talking about taxes for the self employed. I'm actually very nervous to post this video because it's not something I fully understand myself and I didn't want to give you wrong information but I think this is a good starting point and you all can adjust how you save and prepare for your taxes depending on your situation. And as with everything on this channel, this is just my experiences with doing taxes. AND after incorrectly doing my taxes and owing the IRS money year after year, this current way is the most accurate and reliable way to avoiding that deathly IRS letter in the mail.
    Being an independent contractor definitely offers unique work/life/tax benefits but preparing for tax season is a total pain in the ass. If you'd like for me to go more in depth in any aspect of this please let me know. I anticipate Tax Day being pushed back because of COVID so there's plenty of time to get your shit together, BUT for me, taxes are something I like to do ASAP so I don't have to think about it anymore.

    ps. For those who received unemployment last year, unemployment is taxable on the federal level. Congress *could* make unemployment not taxable for this tax season but I haven't seen any talk of that so just be prepared.

    I do my own taxes but I'm not self-employed. Last year I started doing grocery deliveries through the Shipt app so that'll be a major difference for my taxes this year since they don't take money out of our checks. But after watching several videos and research I saved 20% from each check for taxes. I think it's really empowering to understand your money and where it goes so this was a great video to watch! Really informative!

    • @SWEmyatoz
      @SWEmyatoz Před 3 lety +2

      You probably already know this, but all that driving is tax deductible and will make a big difference in how much you will end up owing. Hope there’s a good way that app is tracking miles you’ve driven for all the deliveries :)

      @alyssamaria7339 Před 3 lety +1

      @@SWEmyatoz Yes! I tracked my mileage through the app Everlance. Unfortunately I made around $700 since I started later in the year. Tracking the mileage didn't really do much for me since it was so low. I plan to do much more Shipt this year since I actually enjoy it so I think it'll work in my favor more come next tax season.

    Amazing video Aja! Just a quick note on the info you stated about being a sole proprietorship vs LLC:
    just because you don't personally have "funds available" (like cash in your bank account, an investment account, etc) or a house that does not mean you cannot be sued for what you have. Someone could still sue you as person/sole proprietorship and take more than what you have. It's not likely since "the juice may not be worth the squeeze", but it could still happen. So depending on the nature of a person's business, they may have more liability. People with more liability or a higher likelihood of being sued (like for example a CPA) will likely want to operate under an LLC.

    This video could not have come at a better time! I started a handywoman business at the end of 2019 and was fully working for myself all of 2020. I filed as a LLC because I used to work in litigation and fear what could happen if I got sued. I also filed to be an S-Corp because that’s what I kept hearing was the right thing to do and that s-corps do not pay federal taxes.
    I just found a tax service from Burbank and I’m going to be paying her $500 to file my S-Corp and $175 for my personal so I can make sure I get my taxes filed correctly.
    It’s steep, but hey, I’ll learn how to file them and be able to ask questions and maybe I’ll do my 2021 myself.

    Regarding whether or not to form an llc, you should talk to an attorney not an accountant. Even if you don't have assets all business owners should protect themselves. Also a single member llc files the same exact tax return as a sole proprietor (a schedule C) and is taxed the same way as a sole prop. The only difference is that the llc limits your personal liability. Has absolutely nothing to do with taxes and it costs the same thing to file taxes as an llc as a sole prop. Now, if an llc elects to be taxed as an S-corp, that's a different tax return (K1) and that will cost more money to file.

      @@quynhn totally. I haven't had an issue with it and I've never in my life paid quarterly.

      You should pay quarterly. The more you make, the bigger the penalty it will be. To avoid a penalty, pay aleast pay 90% of you prior year tax. So grab the number on your 1040 ‘total tax due’. Multiply that by 90%. Divide by each quarter. If you overpay, simply get a refund when you file or roll it to next year’s return.

      i believe you can write off car payments and definitely miles so keep track of mileage.

      You cannot deduct commute miles. So not from your house to the salon. If you were traveling from your salon to a client, then yes.

    "its a write off" David Rose :P wonder how taxes will differ for those of us new to WFH..

    • @SWEmyatoz
      @SWEmyatoz Před 3 lety +1

      If you’re WFH for an employer you won’t be able to write off your home office as a tax deductible. You can only do that if you’re self employed.

      it would be better if brands would pay my agency fee on top of my fee. So instead of me taking out $200 on a $1000 deal myself, the company would pay $200 on top of my $1000 so I can keep the whole $1000. I believe that's how it works with commerical work.
