I used an AsRock Lightning board and updated the BIOS without the need to require a processor, it worked great. @@rainnaxilMost new motherboards have a button on the rear IO that allows for this. Simply plug in a drive to the designayed usb slot (most are marked for this) with the latest BIOS on it and press that button. Most don't even need a cpu installed, just a power supply. There's usually a blinking LED that lets you know what it's doing (look at that motherboards manual for that) and that's it. It's usually very easy to do and just like that your BIOS can now handle the shiny new 8000 series APU.

For example if u want to try out one of the new Intel ARC cards those cards are power hungry so ur looking at 650W minimum + Intel Arc. they have refurbished 1660 Supers so if u do that then u can get away with any 500w thats in the store. Two ways this could be changed for better performance. First is faster RAM with the 8600g would have helped as the pack grabbed was only 4800MHz, I bet Austin could have been below $500 with faster ram - a620 still allows RAM overclocking. Second is that a Ryzen 5600x and a RX 6500XT would have cost the same as the 8700g and given better performance on the cheaper AM4 platform.
Also no budget gamer is playing higher than 1080p 😁

That extra $100 might be better spent on faster RAM if using an APU. Id hazard a guess you'd see more of an improvement in gaming performance than going from a ryzen 5 8600g to a r7 8700g. RAM bandwidth will be the main bottleneck, not the apu with 4800mt/s RAM.

I envy the US and Canada having Micro Center - the very last store in my (not small) town that sold internal components for computers recently ceased stocking them, and now only sells pre-builds that honestly leave a lot to be desired (weird CPU+GPU combos, never the right amount of RAM etc) or Apple products. That means from now on the ONLY way I can purchase computer parts is via online stores which kinda sucks ... especially when you need something urgently, like your main SSD has finally died after six long years of use.

    • @wairgald

Unfortunately, they aren't everywhere here in the US and what you can purchase online from them is limited and most of their best deals are in-store only. Also whatever clock speed it has, read it as half, due to their compact size, most laptops aren't well ventilated to actually support their specs, meaning it will run fine with power processor at 55%, maintaining 80 and under 90 degrees under heavy load to prevent damage to the components, unless you're trying to buy a new one every two years, but that's no longer budgeting. 💻
