The Florida East Coast Railway: Titusville to Melbourne

  • In March 2022, I visited the Florida East Coast's mainline between Titusville and Melbourne, Florida. The main goal of the trip was to catch the railroad's SD40-2s and GP38-2s, but I was also treated to some ES44C4s in the railroad's "Champion" paint scheme. On the first morning, I chased a southbound road freight with two ES44s sandwiching an LNG tender. The S-curve at Titusville made for an excellent first shot, and after, I chased it to Cocoa and Pineda. At the time, Pineda still had old searchlights signals, which are now gone as of August 2022. I'm glad that I stuck around a little longer to catch another northbound road freight knocking down the signal. I returned to the line a couple days later to catch the nightly southbound rock train out of City Point with SD40-2s. Even though it was dark, it still made for a good chase. Pineda was the go to, but I also checked out the north end of Palm Bay in Melbourne. It too still had searchlights. The following afternoon, I caught word of a ballast train working the line with a trio of geeps! On the down way to Melbourne, I ran into a northbound local led by one of the breast cancer awareness GP40-2s. After the quick detour, I caught the ballast train notching up out of Palm Bay soon after I arrived. What a great way to end the trip!

Splendid video, Sam! Thank you for documenting these Florida East Coat trains. That opening shot of the train coming through that S-curve was magnificent! The night sequence starting at 11:58 with the searchlight signals was wonderful to see. The six red searchlight signals at 9:57 was a brief shot but well worth the view! I am glad you caught the signal being knocked down at 12:26.

Thank you! The opening scene was a really neat spot in the morning light. I’m also glad I got to see those searchlights before they were replaced.

Lovely sounds from that SD40-2 pair. A real treat for fans of 16-645s.

Yes! I can never get enough of the sound of some SD40-2s, especially at night when it’s quieter outside and you can really hear them.
