  • Hey everyone! In response to a few questions I have received (and my own curiosity) I dove a little more into the oil dilution problem Honda seems to be saddled with as of late. Specifically, I discuss the possibility of the Clarity having this issue, as well as my own hands-on experience here. Have a look to find out! And thank you for your viewership! -Brad

The Honda Clarity 1.5 liter engines are port fuel injected (NOT direct injected). Honda chose low pressure (relative to GDI) and simpler port fuel injection most likely to save space and cost. This is a reasonable engineering choice given all the other expensive high technology systems on our cars. The 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid Press Kit lists the i-Vtech engine features including, "computer-controlled port fuel injection with multi-hole injectors."

The choice of not going for direct injection has nothing to do with cost,, direct injection engines would need maintenance do to the clogged injectors for lack of use, it's a reliability issue so cheers Honda, it was the right choice.

Hey Wintereve! I myself am in Canada, but the oil dilution problems I have heard about seem to be primarily in cooler climates. Northern US, etc. Such a shame because Hondas are usually such great cars! I've had my S2000 since 2006 and it has 180 000 km on it and is going strong!

Basically, it's the owner's/driver's driving usage. If they very-cold start the CRV, then drive 5 minutes and stop/park it at the grocery store, while it's still cold, then shop, then come back to a very-cold start again, and drive 5 minutes to get back home, and they also don't regularly change their oil every 3,000 miles, and they beat the crap out of it, while it's still cold, and low miles on the engine, then there's oil dilution. The majority of the public are not educated in this bad owner/driver behavior.

Hey Brad, say I still want to buy a Honda hrv even though I know now that the fuel leaks into it's engine. Would there be any further/serious damage done to the engine even if I were to change the engine oil every now and then?

    • @BradOnCars
      @BradOnCars  Před 4 lety +4

Hey Vengota! Sorry for the late reply.
If you went for it I would change the oil every 3000 miles or so. If you did it yourself (which is actually quite easy) you could do it for less $$. When I had my first "good" car (and Acura when I was in Uni) I would change the oil every 3000 and the filter every 6000. Made it easy. And quick. You could do the same and that would absolutely minimize the risk. Best of luck either way! Let me know what you decide! -Brad

Patricia Sampier The coupe is actually designed for shorter drivers. The sunroof and roofline make it for adults less than 6 feet tall. The visibility is not very good all around due to manual seat position. But the seatbelt is on the left and should not be a problem to reach. Is the problem because it is far behind you? If so I would leave the door open and then reach backward for the belt and close the door after the belt has been locked.

Hey Derek! That's a good question. At first thought I don't think it's a crankcase vent issue (i.e. pressure and/or combustion blowby), but rather simply due to the condensation of fuel in the combustion chamber (which on the face of it sounds odd as well).
Good thought though. I'm interested in seeing what more comes out of this issue. Hopefully to a good resolution.

After just over three years and 77,800 miles I’ve been running trouble-free. I change the oil/filter every 4,200-5,000 miles (earlier than the scheduled maintenance interval). I only use Shell 93 Octane fuel for the extra detergent. I’m averaging 33.9 mpg. I will be changing the transmission fluid (for the second time) and the differential fluid with my next maintenance at 78,500 miles. The only things I’ve replaced are all four tires and brake pads (also cut the rotors) and the wipers. I hope to keep my Civic for over 250,000 miles.

Well your car does have the 1.5L Turbo direct-injected motor that seems to cause the problems. But given it is a 2019 I hope that either the factory (or the dealer) will provide a) the software update to reduce the issue, and b) they will extend the warranty as I have seen they do for civics and CR-Vs with the motor.

When you buy it, do only the oil changes required in the dealership. AND SEARCH FOR a mechanic that can do 1 or more extra oil-changes in between (each 2 to 3000miles). The oil only costs about 40dollar (use 0w20 from mazda or honda), the best is KROON. Don't change the oil filter, dealership will notice. In that case engine can last for ever.(i hope for you)

There are other auto makers that do have small engines with turbo’s that do suffer from oil dilution. With that said, why doesn’t HONDA install an oil & fuel separator. I have a 2019 CRV. According to Honda it’s not on the oil dilution list. Yet, I do from time to time have oil around my tail pipe exits. No other signs of burning oil. My last step is to measure the use oil durning oil changes to see what the actual difference is. The oil dilution issues alway show up once it’s too late.

I took it to the Honda Dealership, one guy said that maybe I should just get an oil change, BUT, that the car still had the break-in oil in it with Zinc, and that I shouldn't get it changed because of the break-in oil. He told me that, IF, the dipstick goes higher than the orange plastic, that I should then bring it in. It's not above the orange plastic with the two holes. And, why didn't Honda just keep the metal dipstick, it was soo much easier to read it, I can't tell where the oil is or isn't on that orange plastic. Not clear what you mean by not seeing any oil and gas separation after an oil change. I don't think I'd count on that as any evidence of there being no gas in your oil. Yes, the gas may be lighter (not really sure about that), but that doesn't mean they will separate. Gas and oil mix, and stay mixed indefinitely. Think 2-cycle engines. You intentionally mix gas and oil and they stay mixed . . . no separation.

I am quite certain that Honda knows they have a catastrophic engineering design problem, to which their best solution is to make more money by surreptitiously shortening their maintenance intervals.
I have been driving for close to 60 years and as a 2nd-generation Detroit-born-and- raised motor head (my dad and his buddy had their own Model-A garage as high school kids), have always performed my own repair and maintenance on every vehicle (of 2 wheels or 4) that I have ever owned. As I approached my 70s I became much less likely to do anything more than; oil/filter changes, an occasional tune-up, valve adjustment, plugs, brake jobs, ect., but I did resent being unable to TOUCH my new vehicle. Unlike most "professional" mechanics (especially @ dealerships), when I repair a vehicle I intend to keep, I try to use the best available (sometimes used/rebuilt) replacement parts and take all the time necessary to do the best possible repair. When I change oil in a vehicle I intend to keep, I use only the best oil and best filter available and I usually flush during the process. To keep the Honda warranty, we now must let ONLY Honda perform ANY labour and use ONLY Honda parts.
What seemed baffling to me (although it is now becoming much clearer) was NO MENTION of a maintenance schedule in the owner's manual! Given the apparent total on-board computer control (and maybe INTERNET control) of 21st Century vehicles, it seems that the maintenance schedule is variable to the needs of the manufacturers and dealers.
This will be our 3rd Honda and we loved each of them, but we are now the unhappy owners of a 1.5L Turbo 2018 CRV EX. The first year we only drove her for short errands around our small town and trips of 100+ miles only twice. We always used her remote start to warm her up before driving and never jack-rabbited or abused her. We never noticed any variation of oil level, nor did we get a bulletin or recall notice. We did get the "MAINTENANCE DUE" popup on the dashboard at 3,000 mi. and used our "dealer freebie" to have our first oil and filter change early last month.
Later last month we drove to Florida & back, where we drove often at 70-90mph all day × 8 days, for a total of 3,000 mi+. When we got back to town, we found a 1 inch rise over "FULL" on her dipstick level.
Since we live in a high desert climate where it almost NEVER goes down to freezing, ALWAYS warming her up and NEVER accelerating aggressively (minimizing turbo pressure), Honda's theory that "...fuel dilution is due to insufficient warming, especially in cold climates..." is SHEER AND UTTER BULLSHIT!
So now we will take her in for the "Honda fix"; oil/filter change and the magical top-secret mumbo-jumbo software update, but the only way to test her is to drive 3,000mi. accross Texas (with their 80mph speed limit, our radar detector, a big bottle of No Doze and some adult diapers) and see if her oil level no longer rises!
Alternately, our next best option is to get rid of her and try to find a vehicle (preferably something from the last century) that a liitle old lady only drove to church on Sunday.
We did see a website that solicits membership in a law firm's class action suit, and are thinking about joining and taking their printout to show to the Honda service manager.

Hey J D! Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Yeah I think they have a big problem on their hands. It still kills me that so many of these new/er cars have so many terminal failure challenges. Porsche with their IMS bearing, a lot of the 5.5L Mercedes V8s have a $2 seal that if it hardens will force you to lose more than half of your oil pressure, and now Honda too. Seriously makes me want to go buy a basic car that I can fix myself (motors too) rather than take a $50 k chance again. I'm lucky that my car isn't part of it, but only by sheer luck.

There are high mileage CivicX’s now from 2016 that are running like clockwork. I’ve never heard of a CivicX blowing up due to damage caused by oil dilution. Those cars succumbing in exceptional circumstances go into limp mode.

This is a design fault which they have failed to fix. They know try to shift the problem to the owner by requiring the oil contamination level to be monitored and the oil changed.Remember the specs of the car sold state oil and filter change intervals .They clearly have not meet their specs nor have they meet the oil manufactures oil specs of 2% max dilution. The internal combustion engine has been around for decades and this problem has now appeared and only on certain engines. But the most important note is oil dilution causes increased engine wear and early failure and low resale values. Are they going to compensate the owners for these loses. The dip stick markings are useless to indicate oil concentration level .Remember the oil level decreases with mileage and it required to be topped up .So how do you know if the engine has used 500ml of oil while the dip stick shows the level is just at its max with the fuel contamination. So actually there would be 500ml of additional fuel in the oil to bring it to this level thinning the oil further wearing your engine. You cannot use a dip stick to indicate the concentration of two liquids especially if the engine use oil which all engines do.

What people don't understand is that every single direct injected engine is more prone to oil dilution. And as well all know, like 99% of all new engines are direct injected. Honda doesn't have an engine issue. They have a computer programming issue. The 2019 models have been retuned at the factory to warm up quickly and minimize blowby. They best thing you can do is minimize idle and just turn the key on and drive asap. That is the fastest way to warm the engine. Also, don't go by the maintenance minder computer for oil change intervals. Change it every 5k to 6k miles. A few quarts of oil and a filter are cheap peace of mind and will prolong your engine life. Lastly and sadly, new vehicles have become part of the throw away society in which we live. Fridge is broken? Don't call for repairs. It's cheaper to buy a new one. The same with cars. They are no longer built to last 300k miles. That ship has sailed. But you can buy time by staying on top of maintaining the engine.

Hey Spencer! Thanks for the comment. Even though I have built motors I was still a little surprised at the issue with direct-injected motors. And yes I totally agree; I am very aggressive on my oil changes. On any of my cars/bikes. It's cheap and easy, and does a world of good...
And totally I hear you; after 5 years all of my appliances in my kitchen blew up or died. Drives me nutty... Thanks for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it! -Brad

Spenser Hawk I bought a 2018 Accord Touring with the 1.5 Turbo about 3 months ago. I was unaware of this issue at the time. Do you think if I took it to the dealer the will do the software change to make it warm up quicker to mine as well. I do notice it takes a very long time to warm up compared to other cars I have drove. I start it in the mornings for the maximum 20 minutes allowance on the app and then drive it 10 more minutes before it’s warm. The other cars I’ve driven wouldn’t even be started in the morning and I drove for 5 minutes and it was warm.

I took my new 2020 Civic non-turbo LX in to see my mechanic who took care of my 2,000 Civic for 20 years, and he told that he definitely smelled gas, but the gas mark wasn't above the orange plastic at the bottom of the oil dipstick, and that I haven't driven my car enough to damage the engine. He recommended that I keep an eye on the oil dipstick, and the moment it went above the orange plastic of the oil dipstick, to take it in to get my oil changed. I guess that's the only way I'm going to stay ahead of this curve, is to not give the gas a chance to mess up my engine. He told me that any business like Walmart who changes oil should use a Full synthetic oil that matches up with Honda's oil, that it is an industry standard, if it says "Full Synthetic." And, Walmart charges less than 50.00 for a Full Synthetic oil change. So that's what I'm going to do. If it costs me 200.00 dollars a year to change my car's oil 4 times, say every 3 months, it's worth it. I recommend that owner's of new Honda's check their car's oil right away, for level and smell...or check it before you even buy the car for more peace of mind, and then decide if you want to deal with this problem if it does reek of gas.

Any Honda stamped with "Earth Dreams" on its engine has a Direct Fuel Injector Engine...it sprays gas right into the cylinder. Old School is Out, and Earth Nightmares for Honda customers who buy new Honda's are in, with or without the turbo. I have no turbo and my cap and dipstick reek of gas, and I live in Hot South Texas.....Hi today, 78 Degrees and sunny.

You can't go by smell, go by level. But if it makes you feel better have the oil analysed. I'd honestly bet you're perfectly fine. And also this is a direct injection problem, your engine is port injected.

Funny how much misinformation gets floated around the internet. My 2017 Civic turbo has had no oil dilution issues in three full years of ownership. None. No increase in the sump level. No gasoline odors in the oil or interior. No drivability issues. Nothing, nada, zippo.
