Paul and Brian shared so many things: a working-class perspective on the highs and lows of everyday life; a sense of being different from others; the feeling of being overwhelmingly in love with another person; and finally, an existential loneliness that permeates all their music. How wonderful, then, that they were born just days apart and were each other’s biggest fans. It is well documented that this is Paul McCartney´s all time favorite song and that speaks for itself. For all of us Hawthorne High School grads that is special.
Not Silly Love Songs. That was inspired by a comment made by John Lennon. Whenever Paul heard God Only Knows he thought it was the most beautiful love song that he'd ever heard and indeed composed an "answer". It was "Here, There And Everywhere". .
Incorrect. Here There and Everywhere was already written. When the Beatles recorded Here There and Everywhere, they indicated they were actually inspired by Wouldn't It Be Nice. And McCartney has actually said his real favorite on the album is You Still Believe In Me. The gorgeous double tracked lead vocal version is only on the mono Pet Sounds. They couldn't find the vocal overdub for the stereo mix.
Beautiful song and the energy of having these two musical visionaries together on the same stage transcends the bad notes and raw mix of the recording. God only knows what the world would sound like without them.
Never saw this clip before, but it's so good to see (and hear) Sir Paul get to perform his all-time favorit Beach Boys song with Brian. These guys have so much respect and appreciation for each other that each band attempted to outdo each other back in the day, driving each other to record some of the best music ever. I agree with Paul, I can't help but get teary-eyed whenever I hear this song. A lot of BB songs can do that to you. RIP Carl and Dennis Wilson and John Lennon.
There are two songs off the top of my head I can think of that will automatically make me cry no matter when or where I hear them. One is "God Only Knows" as originally recorded by the Beach Boys. The second is "The Long and Winding Road" by the Beatles. The emotional power of both of these songs is overwhelming, in my opinion.
Agreed Carl could cut right through your heart with this ballads and the "sibling harmonies" Phew. Man if you don't tear up on this song . theres something wrong with you. This was the progenitor of Paul's "Here There and Everywhere" Paul chose to resolve the complicated harmonies of "God only knows" with complicated and ground breaking arpeggiated melody lines. Probably the ONLY band in the world The Beatles had to pull out all the guns to match.
The Bee-Gees also had amazing tonalities on their harmonies "Words" was one of those songs that just sent shivers up my spine. The beginning of New York Mining Disaster 1941 was such a pure demonstration of harmonies that had the song only been "In the event of something happening to me.." It would had been a masterpiece.
This made me smile because I know how much Paul loves this song! How special to have these two men together who really moved rock songwriting along a ton!
This is so special because: Brian Wilson is a genius musical composer....and Paul McCartney has often said this is his favorite all time song (know I am repeating what others have mentioned but don't care). HOW BEAUTIFUL. Be still my heart.
Fun fact: Paul and Brian were born just two days apart in June 1942. I don't know what was in the air that week, but it created two of music's greatest minds

More than anybody else, these two are responsible for bringing melody to rock & roll.
Just shows what an incredible job Brian did in the studio. His stuff is incredibly difficult to duplicate live.
It is well documented that this is Paul McCartney´s all time favorite song and that speaks for itself. For all of us Hawthorne High School grads that is special.
Absolutely beautiful song performed by 2 of the world's greatest musical geniuses.
Brian + Paul = more musical genius than the rest of the world!
Better than the tips of the rest of the world’s pinkies!
Ya think someone would have thought to film this world shaking meeting of two of the greatest living musical legends of all time...
And bring production values worthy of them!
paul knows how complex the chords and progressions of pet sounds are and recognized it immediately being a songwriter himself
That was absolutely magnificent, what a gift for us!!’
Some day both of these guys will no longer be with us. That's going to be a tough pill to swallow, like it was with John Lennon. Hard to imagine.
+454something Yes and even George :(
They'll always be with us. Their music will live on forever.
+Dwide Schrude Yes you are correct. :) At the start of this I think the conversation was about live performances. :) #Fighton
I dread stuff like that. I hope they'll live till they are like 115.
wimpy mccarney talent won't make a pimple on wilson's ass
Possibly the greatest composers of the 60s.
Them, Simon & Garfunkel, Marvin Gaye, etc.
@@owen3721 Marvin Gaye was better known as a singer than a composer.
Also Jim Morrison
Also some guy named John.
@@kevinhazaelhernandezvillas3410But he was a composer and a damn good one
@@Ram44 Wouldn't it Be Nice and God Only Knows were on the flip of each other....so wouldn't the Beatles have heard they both at the same time?
How can you not fall in Love when Brian Sings... Genius!
Watched love and mercy yesterday and came across this. Epic.
A Timeless Duet 50 Years In The Making!!!
No one sings it like Carl.....
52 "dislikes?" REALLY? As Jerry Seinfeld used to say, "Who ARE these people?"
+Nelson Lugo These are the same FANees who say Pete Best was better than Ringo... generation "uh?"
LoL ~ how true!
And SAD Nelson .. VERY SAD!
+Nelson Lugo In a nutshell, they're fucking idiots.
+Nelson Lugo Its now up to 56---they may be reproducing ??!!
Art Vandelay007 not to mention George Harrison
I think Paul started crying towards the end. This song means a lot to him.
The two greatest talents of 60's melodic pop music.
WONDERFUL!!!!... two musical geniuses.....
These guys have huge respect for one another and their talents.
When it came out, Lennon called Pet Sounds a masterpiece.
Probably the ONLY band in the world The Beatles had to pull out all the guns to match.
mickavellian here here
+mickavellian Spot on, you sir have powers of observation and an understanding of music that far exceeds most people. with much respect to you.
Thank you very much , I AM a musician :) and music theory is my passion.
I too am a musician, a vocalist, and Brian, Carl and Al set the bar really high. A book of work never to be duplicated in our lifetime
Paul's favorite song (he has said more than once!) sang with his fellow songwriting genius Brian - amazing!
Enjoy these two as much as you can as this will only happen once in a lifetime.
HOLY what the??!!! This is waaaaay beyond amazing!!
Fun fact: Paul and Brian were born just two days apart in June 1942. I don't know what was in the air that week, but it created two of music's greatest minds
wow. Two of the greatest composes of the last century.
I think we'll be listening to their music for hundreds of years.
I wish I was there!!
Paul McCartney singing this song just feels so right.
Imagine being there when this happened. Being such a big fan of both the beatles and the beach boys, i think id faint
When a god meets another...
Well genius meet genius...
Two Legends singing together, and Guess what..They are still alive!..Drugs and everything that goes along with Fame,Didn't Put them Down...Godspeed to Micheal and Prince,They never got do a Duet!
God bless Wilson and McCartney
I wish Brian and Paul would do a collaborative album together whilst they are still with us. Just think of them doing some of the best Beatles, Beach Boys, and new stuff together. Wow! I would sure buy the album. They are like fine wine. A special vintage that I would love to taste. They are both big fans of each other, so why not? Seems like a no brainer, and the clock is ticking.
Two wonderful musicians singing a wonderful song! Thank you for sharing and God bless everyone and happy Easter
the two GREATEST music makers in the past 50 years.
I think I would pay any amount of money to see these two on stage together singing my favorite song in the world
You guys may not know this, but I just let out the strangest sound filled with agony and content. I love you, Brian Wilson. I love you and your music all day, erryday.
me thinks paul was tearing up near the end
Wow!!!! I didn’t know that this had happened!!
This must have been such a significant moment for both of them.
Timeless expression of unfiltered love dancing on a playful melody backed by angelic strings.
