@@chittychad18 yea people who make rings all day long if they collect for a year that’s about a pound of gold 24k gold that be a lot if random mixture because it’s powder it’s easy to devolve it all into 24k

My wifes wedding band was left with the final hammer marks too. As time goes on, they will gradually wear smooth to a perfectly smooth, polished band. Takes about 7 years. There may be some symbolism about starting off with many facets and working towards a perfect finish in there somewhere?
Incidentally, the master goldsmith Ken Moffat who made our wedding bands, also pattern welds GOLD DAMASCUS rings... Just saying.

Tip: Weld your bride's rings together after you are married. During normal wear and tear the wedding band and the engagement ring will wear thin. After four years, mine were noticeably worn. Had a jeweller weld them, now 36 years later, still perfect. Wishing you both all the best and many happy years.
Or you could get platinum, it doesn’t wear out like gold. Tmyk

My husband and I made each others wedding rings. We found a little goldsmith who would instruct us and provide us with tools. It was sooo much fun :)

we did so too. but we did use some gold strips and bend them and sodered the ends. Was quite a different approach than he did.
Also in Germany there is a saying you should not make your own rings.

Alec, I know this comment is a couple of days late but I'd like to share some wisdom that was given to my wife and I.
Men and women speak completely different languages, and one of the best things you can do for your marriage is learn her language. Guys typically want to fix things, do things, achieve goals. We are run by the question 'can I do it?'
Women are run by emotions, their question is 'am I loved?'
So when she comes home from a rough day at work and is upset about how someone treated her, don't offer to fix the problem because she doesn't want you to fix it, she just wants you to listen and provide emotional support!
Future Misses Steele, the same is true for you. Alec speaks an entirely different language than you do even if you don't realize it! The best thing you can do is try to learn his language while he tries to learn yours!
One more thing and I'm done. Always, always, ALWAYS be willing to talk to each other! One day your spouse is going to do or say something that hurts you, don't just blow it off. They might not realize they hurt you and if they don't know it'll happen again and again. Calmly and gently talk to each other about your hurts. And if you don't want to say something in anger let them know you want to talk but you need time to cool down.
My wife and I have been married for just 2 and a half years, but this advice has helped in many many ways!

I love the hammered finish on the ring. I think it gives a lot of character to the ring as you are a blacksmith.

I like that you went traditional with the rings and didn't try to make them fancy or a mix of metals together, you adding a hammered look is a great nod to your craft and makes it very personal. Congrats on your engagement!

I turned mine and my wife's on a lathe out of titanium, but it never occurred to me to cast out of gold. There's also the lack of knowledge on how to do so!

Should make a Damascus wedding bell to ring on the day that would be cool and an interesting forge
Would be cool but I think bells are usually cast. If you were to forge a damascus bell, I think you might need to press forge into a engineered mold and even then you would have to potentially only do half at a time and then weld them afterwards (welds would ruin finish).
@@nathanthom8176 fair call i thought they may have been able to mill it out or something after using the press to depress the centre but yer ill leave it to people who know more than me to figure out if it is possible i just thought it would look awesome and be Great content but yer im no blacksmith lol
@@rickyhorsburgh6581 milling would be possible but boy would that be a big stock removal job, and the Damascus pattern would need to be considered as stock removal can remove interesting patterns within the billet.
Technically it is possible to forge steel bells (although the traditional liberty Bell shape would be difficult) the issue is consistent thickness of the bell wall to ensure a pleasant tone.
I think it would be a good project although I feel Alec's forging skills are getting a little worse (due to lack of practice).
Steel bells kind of sound awful. They're really only used on trains, most bells are cast from bronze or brass because of their acoustic properties.
Perhaps a damascus gong? He could also set it with one diamond annualy for every year of marriage.
honestly i love making hammered finished silver rings. haven't quite had the balls yet to invest in some gold to make rings yet haha.

Hey Alec. I'm a jeweler that completes between 20 and 30 various repairs and creations per day from start to finish, and I must say that it's really interesting seeing how a blacksmith grew into making jewelry, and the approaches you use to do things such as finishing and sizing. I can't say it's all what you'd call "best practice" but you make a wonderful final product. Good job, and good luck with the little lady! Keep it up.

Yeah, I'm actually curious how much $$$ is spread around the work area from the cutting and grinding he has done on these rings. But then, I realize that in the grand scheme of things, it's nothing compared to the value of their joy and love for each other.

I've watched that engagement ring video 5 times now. It's beautifully made, the music, the pace, the amazing level of care and craftsmanship that went in to them was amazing.
Imagine 75 years from now their great grandchildren are getting married and they get handed these and when they ask where they came from, their parents can tell them "Your greatgrandpa made them" and imagine that look of awe on their face. Beautiful works of art, amazing metallurgy, and filled with love. Amazing job Alec.

Being able to make your own stuff and having it all with the "Custom Made" imprimatur at zero additional cost is just way cool and such a win. The facets on those rings at a nice high finish add a lot of interest and is strangely appropriate given your chosen trade.

Our wedding is in a few weeks, and we had the opportunity to make our wedding bands for each other in a little shop. I can highly recommend doing this, makes them very special, and its a fun day to spend :)
