      StichMethod Guitar I think, after a little investigation, the same is true for the 5th string root diminished chord shape. Each note can be a root and the intervals rotate through the chord shape to make a full diminished chord when you move the shape 3 frets like the one you showed from the Beatles song.

      Didn't hear the answer to my question here so far so...
      When you are counting up the chords based on the scale notes...
      Major, minor, minor,
      major, major, minor,
      then you get to the 7th note which should be a diminished chord (1 fret up, I believe) would it be a half or full diminished chord?
      Thanks in advance - Jstn

    I have been playing music for 63 years, guitar for 56. Although I have no formal music education, I have took lessons and studied many books on music theory. In my 20's I was working offshore, driving a boat. One summer, the company sent me a deck hand to train. He was a small framed nerdy guy that was a college music professor. We stayed on that boat 24 hours a day for a month. I taught him what he needed to know about working an offshore boat and he taught me music theory in a way that made more sense to me than any book could. He put everything in simple terms. He taught me to look at music as conversation filled with nouns, pronouns, verbs and adverbs. To look at solo's as being happy, mad, cursing and praying. I was enlightened. The reason I bring this up is that I see the same down to earth personality in the StichMethod Guitar video's. You are easy to connect with and are a very good teacher. I think watching these videos will make me a better teacher and player.

  • @KevinIlsen
    @KevinIlsen Před 5 lety +6

    Diminished chords . . . proving the adage "Music is the sound of math" !
    There are 12 notes in the chromatic scale. And 12 half-step intervals between them. (1-b2-2-b3-3-4-b5-5-b6-6-b7-7 then back to 1)
    A diminished chord is 1-b3-b5-bb7. (bb7 is just another "label" for 6)
    The interval from 1 to b3: THREE half-steps. (1 => b2, b2 => 2, 2 => b3)
    The interval from b3 to b5: THREE half-steps (b3 => 3, 3 => 4, 4 => b5)
    The interval from b5 to bb7: THREE half-steps (b5 => 5, 5 => b6, b6 => bb7)
    The interval from bb7 to 1: THREE half-steps (bb7 => b7, b7 => 7, 7 => 1)
    Notice that as you cycle through the notes (intervals) of a diminished chord, you go through the entire chromatic scale, in EQUAL intervals of three 1/2-steps at a time, and end up back on the note where you started. (3 x 4 = 12)
    No matter which of those 4 notes you start on (the 1, the b3, the b5, or the bb7), you will cycle through the same 4 notes in sequence, and end up back where you started.
    Thus each diminished chord is actually FOUR diminished chords, depending on which note you decide to call the "1."
    For example:
    C diminished = C Eb Gb Bbb (i.e., A)
    Eb diminished = Eb Gb Bbb (i.e., A) Dbb (i.e, C)
    Gb diminished = Gb Bbb (i.e., A) Dbb (i.e., C) Fbb (i.e., Eb)
    A diminished = A C Eb Gb
    Music is the sound of math.

So many teachers don't explain what different kinds of chords do to a song or their effect which is really important to know, thank you so much for explaining that aspect too! also the G minor 7 chord shape you use at 9:00 i often found barring the b and e strings with my middle finger easier then putting my ring finger where the pinky is, also it give you a free finger to add embellishments which is really cool but its how i tought myself to play that shape :3

  • @AdamFunnell
    @AdamFunnell Před 2 měsíci

    So a full diminished chord is simultaneously four different full diminished chords, depending on which of the four notes you choose as the root.
    The notes D, F, Ab and B make up D diminished, but the exact same four notes make up F diminished, Ab diminished and B diminished.
    Essentially, this is possible because the 12 semitones of the octave have been neatly quartered. All intervals are three semitones long.

    That's an amazing property, that every third generates a new inversion. Also interesting that the D full diminished shape becomes the A half diminished shape when you move it back to the A string, and that's kinda sorta the fifth of the D shape. I wonder if that would have an application...

    Great video Stich. Taking it from the minor chord and slowly transforming to diminished made it very easy to understand how the chord's constructed. Question, what app are you using on your computer that showed a portion of the fretboard with the root in red?

    Thank you very much for this lesson. Right now I'm wondering: What do you call a full diminished chord with a major third instead of a minor third?
