  • This is an abandoned truss bridge that crosses the Wabash river between Indiana and Illinois. By a town called New Harmony, Indiana. The bridge opened in December 21, 1930 and closed May 21, 2012. One reason for it's closure was due to it's narrow nature it was not safe as a two lane bridge. From September 2007 to April 2008, the bridge was closed to all traffic when cracks appeared in some of the concrete support piers. During the closure, contractors added new pilings to the existing piers and made other required repairs. In 2010, engineers determined that the bridge required an additional $6 million in repairs. The National Bridge Inventory rated the bridge "Structurally Deficient."
The New Harmony Toll Bridge was identified as a top priority among the thousands of rural bridges in the United States worthy of repair in President Biden's “American Jobs Plan” proposed on March 31, 2021. The Bill must first be approved by The US Congress, including votes by Indiana's 8th Congressional District Representative Larry Bucshon and US Senators Todd Young and Mike Braun. All three subsequently voted against the final bill. On the Illinois side, Mary Miller of Illinois's 15th congressional district voted no, while Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth voted yes.

I crossed that bridge many times. It's kind of sad to know it's closed, but I can understand why. New Harmony is such a special place. So many lessons to be learned from it's story.

Even though it was a narrow bridge, it was a real workhorse until Indiana 69 was extended in the later 90s from New Harmony to Griffin at exit 4 on I 64. There were several million bushels of grain that went across it each year to the grain handling facilities in Mt Vernon,In. It literally held up a pipeline on wheels for the Texaco refinery in Lawrenceville, Il to tranport product to and from their barge loading facility in Mt Vernon as well. It was also a main highway from Louisville and Evansville to St. Louis until I 64 was opened in the early 70s. The bridge has alot of history and has been very important to the area during its lifetime. Thanks for the video.

Really curious as to why the man was out there in a truck by himself. Perhaps he was guarding the area? Althought i don't see a reason for it. Seems suspicious.

Seems a shame they aren’t turning it into a pedestrian walkway or part of a scenic hike/bike path.

i used to drive a large box truck and took that bridge many times, it was a very very tight fit if there was oncoming traffic, literally inches away from the side and another car.

6 mil' to repair? I wonder how that compares to what it would cost to demolish?

I saw it when we was driving in town. I will have to check it out. You access it via crossville?

Yup, from the Illinois side, I kind of did it in a weird way, because I was lead wrong on how accessible the bridge was. Apparently the bridge was very accessible from both sides lol
My advice would be to park somewhere in New Harmony and walk over it from that side.

Man where do you find these places! ??

Some are pretty obscure, I didn't know anything about New Harmony or the bridge until just recently lol. I do stumble upon some places through Facebook groups, some through other urbexers on CZcams and Instagram. Also sometimes places I've been able to find by just wandering around the map on Google Maps or even driving around the backroads.

As a structural engineer, the truss spans look to be in decent condition.

Nah, didn't get to see that, but I know there was probably a lot I missed, so want to go back in the future for sure.
