I first heard this song on BFBS in Cyprus in 1970, sung by Gordon Lightfoot. I'd never heard of Kris Kristofferson! I liked the way Lightfoot did it, but it was the song itself that grabbed me. But I'd heard and loved other songs of KK's some time before I discovered that he'd written this.
