Pokemon HeartGold Hardcore Nuzlocke - Headbutt Tree Pokemon Only! (No items, No overleveling)

- I tried a Hardcore Nuzlocke of Pokemon HeartGold using only Pokemon you can get from headbutt trees! With only 9 of these encounters, and most of them being bug Types, this challenge had a few brick walls! What type of Nuzlocke challenge I should try next?
Normal Nuzlocke Ruleset:
1. Fainting = Death
2. Can only catch the first Headbutt Tree encounter on each Route (Species Clause).
3. Nickname Pokemon
Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset (from Pokemon Challenges):
4. No items in battle (held items okay)
5. No leveling past the next gym leader/E4 (at the START of the battle)
6. Play on "Set" battle mode

This run is really cool for a lot of reasons:
1. You're making use of all of your Pokemon. Even the ones like Butterfree who are usually considered useless endgame.
2. You're the only person I know who would have ever thought to use natural gift against Ho-oh lol.
3. Even after a pretty devastating loss, you decided to pick yourself back up and try again.
Mad respect (though I am a bit dissapointed about the shinies lol).
Gen 3+ Butterfree is well-known to be one of the best support pokemon in nuzlockes
@@bvd_vlvd Had no clue honestly. I'm not great at nuzlockes myself so I just assumed it wasn't great. Looking at it now though, I can see how having compound eyes sleep powder can be useful.

Yeah it also drives me nuts that the Johto gym leaders have barely any Johto Pokemon. (I think it's because Johto Pokemon are just very weak in general.) And add on to the fact so many Johto Pokemon aren't even catchable until Kanto. How does that make any sense? They had a great oppourtunity to fix these issues in the remakes
In the manga(and games I think), the hundred new Johto pokémon are all new species. I think it was even mentioned that Jasmine was a rock type gym leader because the steel type was newly discovered back then. Why would leaders use new pokémon if there are reliable older ones.
@@seintseiya2496 Because Johto Pokemon are much weaker on average.
No but still
Falkner: hoothoot/noctowl
Bugsy: spinarak/ledyba/heracross
Morty: misdreavus(his ace could still be gengar)
Chuck: heracross/hitmontop
And Claire could get something other than kingdra, because it evolves from a gen 1 evolution line, but there are no other dragons in johto, as the pseudo in this gen is rock type
You should watch Pokemon Challenges video "Why gen 2 is the worst Gen". It perfectly caputres everything that is so god awful wrong with these games. And don't get me wrong, Gen 2 is way up there for me based on nostalgia alone but looking back at them critically there is a lot of "wtf were they even thinking" moments. Probably due to the fact that they thought these would be the last games ever and just wanted to cash out
@@Mason-kd7xk Probably why they only remade red/blue into leaf green and firered.
You know, HGSS are usually remembered very fondly by the community as possibly the best remakes in the series. I was really surprised to hear you criticize it so harsh but... you’re not wrong lol
I never played Them as a kid, and as an adult I didn't like them as much as other games, I guess nostalgia plays a big role
Most of those issues are really just holdovers from the originals. GSC were always more of an expansion to RBY than brand new things, and the fact that so many pokemon are just... Kanto really rubs it in. I wish Gamefreak would implement a system like Crystal Clear's trainer scaling where trainers get stronger based on how many gym badges you get.
Great remakes for not so great games
I still love HGSS but yeah gen 2 games always rub me the wrong way of how many gen 1 pokémons you get to see in the beginning, not saying they should had done like gen 5, but would be cool knowing that Kanto is right there that only places next to Kanto had gen 1 pokémons they would need to make your house in the other side of the map but I think for pacing would work best than your house literally be in the middle of the two regions
I played them as a kid and he's completely right tbh. I'd say black and white 1 and 2 are the best in the series.
Wow I really respect the fact that your honest even when the run ends in failure.

The levelling system in HG was stupid. One of my favorite games, but the E4 were barely over lv 40. And it's hard to grind, ev train etc when everything is such a low level.
Idk i thought that was neat. Also why do people always skip the Elite 4 rematch. They are way harder the second time around.
Good thing Drayano's SoulSilver fixes a lot of those problems.
Bruh, I'm doing my own HeartGold nuzlocke, I'm right before the elite four but it's so tedious to grind in that game that I don't even have the confidence to grind up my Pokemon up to level 48 and 4 out of two members died between rocket hideout and jasmine, and they were all replaced with four new members and it took half a month for those members to be with the same level as the others, anyways I'm going to grind up my Pokemon and try to attempt the elite four, wish me luck.
@@Iskou307 you can rematch trainers with the pokegear

For me, the Johto games have always been the most comfortable. The music, the gyms, the difficulty with the gyms, the Pokémon, even the abhorrent level curve, I think gen 4 did the best job at immersing the player in a somewhat "realistic" world where not everyone is trained up to your level like they are in more linear games. I don't think gen 4 are supposed to be fast games, they're games that I think the developers expected you to play over the course of several days at a time, not necessarily in one continuous sitting. This is why there are only certain days that you can battle certain trainers and catch certain Pokémon. But I completely understand why people don't like them
Whoa this is genuinely a fresh and good take! You put my love of HGSS into words very nicely.
Yeah, HGSS is definitely the most relaxing Pokémon experience.
@Mist The Toad in game level is an abstraction
You play HGSS to see your team grow in a much more rewarding way
Wholseome comment, HGSS are just so relaxing, especially with no silly end of the world plots! The music, slower pace and following pokemon are a blessing. Very few cutscenes or story bits too.
You have my respect for calling it for your own well being. If the game was fun to play and you were engaged, that would be a fine reason to take a break and come back refreshed later. But if it's miserable and dragging you down, I'm 100% for walking away. A miserable grind in a game that's notorious for long boring stretches isn't worthy of your time. And whatever the case, health comes first! Thanks for these fantastic videos!
Need to make a few points:
1. You're a wimp for giving up, because you told me to say it...
2. Love your challenge video's and after seeing a few I subscribed.
3. I hope to see a lot more of this kind of challenge video.
Keep up the good work!
Heracross is the reason I don't have any semblance of Whitney trauma and easily my favorite Jotho Pokemon
same but because of the ingame-trade Machop in literally the same town that has an entire Gym dedicated to a type that it's strong against
I like to use chikoritas reflect
Let me guess, you played only HG/SS and not the original 2nd gen, i.e. G/S/C.
@@martinpiekarski1512 I played the originals many years ago but they had a problem where they never saved the game so I may have never gotten to her on those. I did however play the remakes quite often and they are the ones I recall
@@geraldpfeffer Heh, funnily enough, my GBC (which I still have) is so old that now it malfunctions and can eat your save too, so playing in it is risky. Anyway, my point was that Heracross in original G/S/C games hardly knows any fighting type moves. Since it is a bug/fighting type, it can still be a good tank against Miltank but defeating it using Heracross in these games is not as smooth as it is in the remakes, where he can learn Brick Break relatively early on (although you still need to train a lot since it's a very short time between catching one and the gym as you acquire Headbutt only in Ilex Forest). I caught Heracross but still beat Whitney quite easily with Geodude.
I aint good at pokemon in general, but when i see this, I say to my self that this look cool and i want to try it for my self. Nice video btw!!
This is a dub. He just reset the timeline! I love how well you research abilities/movesets/EV training. Brock would be proud.
A version of this for Diamond/Pearl/Platinum for honey trees would be really cool too
I am just imagining how long that would take, cool no doubt, but long
@@geraldpfeffer yeah I didn't really think it through before commenting. It could serve as a kind of long term project tho, like I imagine you could get stuck at some parts of the game until you're waiting for a certain encounter relying on dupes clause. So you could just set honey on a heap of trees before bed and check all in the morning and don't do anything else until you get the encounter you need
@@benji6263 It does sound like it would make for a good long term project. I do wish that the game decided what pokemon would come out of the tree when you interact with it, that way you could at least go back to your save to keep trying.
really nice nuzlocke. mad respect for taking the loss in the end. nuzlocke's are supposed to be hard and losses just happen. realizing it could've been avoidable is somehwat of a win itself because you can learn from it. that's also the satisfaction I got from this video, not because I'm happy you lost but because nuzlocke's work as intended and there's no need to sugarcoat it.
You know as a shiny hunter… the fact that you killed not one, but two full odds shinies really hurts my heart. You monster. 😂
"Wow Johto is so cool. A pidgey and a pidgeotto so many new and unique Pokemon"
every time I watch this video I have to give a bit of a laugh at that line
The only notable thing I can say about my tree-headbutting experiences is that I once caught a level 6 Noctowl in SoulSilver. And here you are, using Natural Gift on a powerful legendary Pokémon. XD
I've always thought Morty should be the first gym leader with a vastly and misdrevous and then Faulkner be the fourth because there's so many bird types to pick, skarmory, xatu, noctowl, would be a much better design. Also violet city you can catch vastly and the two towers feels like more of a birds nest place.
I like that, although it could be more difficult than anticipated due to how many mons rely on normal type moves in the early game. Also, misdreavus is deceptively strong for that point in the game. 85 spatk is enormous for the first gym, and even 60 atk is not terrible
@@claudiolentini5067 So I think the reason it works in my mind is these games are very much a sequel for those who played the previous games so they'd know a ghost type match up. For first time players its a fun twist! But also if you get Misdreavus a bad move set that balances out the stronger stats (plus if they made houndor available early it makes for a good match up too)
@@asharthur2321 The 4th gen level up moveset is pretty good for this point. Assuming it stays at the same lavel to Falkners pidgeotto, the misdreavus would have growl, psy wave, spite and astonish. Decent moveset, full of annoying strategies
My dude, im glad you didnt spend days replayin for that one fight. You did a great job. Have a nice algorithm comment instead of insults!
10:00 I don't know why, but seeing a Venomoth style through a dragon-themed team seems very familiar

Looking forward to more! I haven’t enjoyed a nuzlocke video this much in a while. Nice style.
Mad respect for restarting your run, even if you fail in the end.
Ik how frustrating hgss is. But you got a lotta heart for your nuzlockes.
Very glad to see a nuzlocke where someone isn’t afraid to call out Johto for the massive flaws it has a region. I’d call you a wimp for not doing another run, but I could hardly force myself to do a casual run of Johto, much less three difficult nuzlockes of it that don’t really have any variance.
Honestly really really like your content of nuzlockes. The content is so creative and I love the charm you bring to it. Definitely want to see more of it!!

Commented purely to get your video more attention, I’ve loved your content. Most enjoyable play through to watch by far
If you are not catching the Ho-Oh, you could just run away to end the fight.
Great video, keep up the good work! I honestly don't mind you not restarting for that one battle. I would suggest using save state to save you the time but I understand that that might not be your preferred way of nuzlocking, especially since abilities and nature's change between runs.
Johto is a Kanto DLC. I like the art style of the Pokémons and the region itself but it really feels like you playing the Kanto games for a second time
I know full well the difficulty of Uh-Oh.
Yep, especially when he could just run and skip the battle entirely.
Yeah but where’s the fun in that
I can't stop watching these hard-core nuzlockes of yours haha. Inspires me to try one with my Emerald version coming in!
Thank you for all the wonderful content. I'm still new to the Nuzlocke idea but I'm trying. These videos really help me understand the other side of Pokemon. As a kid I always put attacking moves over everything.
Extra props for having your third video as a new creator to be a wipe. Real risk, but definitely encouraging to others watching. And it started your catch phrase!!
I have just lost my first nuzlocke run and was so sad, but this video gave me the motivation to start again!
Keep up the great content. You're making Pokemon fresh and enjoyable for me again!
I really love your work! Hope you can have more viewers cause your deserve it.
I suspect you’re going to start gaining a lot of subscribers this year. Your content is excellent
Thank you :)
You're the first person I've seen who doesn't seem to like HGSS, or rather Johto as a whole. That makes me happy because I feel the same way about the Gen 2 games and their remakes: sure it's a very pretty DS game, your Pokémon follow you which is hella cool and there are sooooo many things to do, but the balancing is awful and grinding is made into a never-ending nightmare.
You do realize that grinding depends on you aka the player and not the game? You know you could be underleveled and beat the elite four? You know you could grind in many different areas as their are lots of higher level pokemon which give tons of exp right ? as mentioned in the video there are tons of area u could explore after the 3rd gym. And you do realize you could beat red with a level cap of 60? Which is the average level cap to grind in most of the pokemon games? Yeah and cry why you have to grind so much in a pokemon game.

HeartGold and SoulSilver have some really odd level plateaus, and Kanto encounters are very underleveled, BUT it has a lot of its difficulty in the boss battles where it counts.
Compare this to X and Y, which do have a lot of difficulty, but not always where you want it. Mostly random Trainer battles in random caves, not in a narratively strong boss fight.
I can't blame for quiting tbh, this playthrough seemed quite hard, good on you for getting to lance tho
Excellent narration. Very pleasant to hear. Keep it up!

I am glad to see someone else has seen the glory of "Tinted Lenses" as nothing quite compares to haveing Yanmega hit hard against the type chart. Uproar on a rock type, or bug buzz on a houndoom just feels wrong and glorious with it.
Houndoom is part dark type it's neutral to bug type but now I want to use a pokemon with tinted lens
@@mikepope6252 tinted lenses removes 1 penalty (give a 2x multiplier) when attacking the wrong way on the type chart. (I assume this works to make houndoom weak to bug instead of neutral, i need to investigate if it only works when you would otherwise get the "not very effective" message. I do know that if it was 1/4 damage (say psychic into psychic/steel) it becomes 1/2 damage)
Either way tinted lenses is amazing, especially if you do a bug only run as it help with coverage against those types you normally struggle with. (Or any restricted catchlist run)
I'm binge watching this channel. I'm learning something everytime I watch a different video
Been watching all your videos and your definitely going to get big
love the naming schemes you do lol... especially fond of this one, cereal good
Venomoth - ambipom - butterfree combo OP
Johto doesn’t bug me much for those reasons, even tho it probably should. The lack of Johto mons is because the games are meant to be pretty direct sequels to RBY, so there weren’t Kanto vs Johto Pokémon at the time, just Pokémon. And the Kanto Leaders DO use new Pokémon, so there’s still some variety.
The grinding I can’t really excuse either. In GSC, you can get away with it because the badge boosts are nutty and also boost move base power, but in HGSS, you’re grinding on level 35 Gravelers to fight a level 50 Dragonite with a Base Power 120 STAB move. I actually fear this Dragonite MORE than Cynthia’s Garchomp because of how hard it is to get Ice Beam in this game
But I love the game anyway, because it rolls with the “love your Pokémon no matter what” message better than almost any other game. Walking with them, talking to them, giving them haircuts, joining the Olympics… and in a weird twist, the game’s HORRIBLE Level curve actually gets you more attached to your team, _because_ you just spent so much time training them.
Also, they give you Totodile, who is, imo, the single most broken starter in Nuzlockes, specifically in HGSS. Jack of all stats, learns SD and Agility and lots of other moves, and Wacan or Rhindo Berry means that there’s basically NOTHING in the region that can beat it 1v1. Raichu or Red’s Pika? Wacan and EQ. Meganium? Rhindo and Ice Fang. Dragonite? Scarf Ice Fang. I say this as a Cyndaquil Stan, mind you (tho Quil also gets BP 120 STAB before Gym 3, so we take those)
I've never seen somebody do a run like this before. Really interesting idea.
Woah your channel is growing so quickly
