Was always very impressed with the pace he could get on his serve for his height. He was not tall like John Isner or Ivo Karlovic, which meant he had to have a very good service motion.
The way he served, its not surprising all the injuries he had. Its like when you pull a rubber band and let it go. That "snap" generates a lot of power, but there's only so many times your body can do that... like a baseball pitcher.
In his prime, he was probably a top 15 player, but his serve made him get to #1. He was quick, good forehand, but his serve and volley was damn good.

federer owned his serve. the speed absolutely didn't bother him. he broke roddick with ease.
What made Roddick's serve unique was not just the speed, but it also had the spin to match Sampras's. Traditionally servers had to sacrifice velocity for spin, but Roddick's serve motion's kinetic chain allowed him to generation so much power that it had both insane velocity AND spin. The result was a crazy heavy ball that placed tremendous pressure on opponents. Either be aced or return the ball back short to be forced into a highly disadvantageous defensive position. If you couldn't neutralize Roddick's one-two punch combo it was pretty much game over.

if taylor dent and greg rusesdki were not injured they would have surpassed this speed , rusedski back injury forced him to reduce the speed , while dent rarely played but he had a mighty serve
