I was baptized in the Roman tradition but had no idea the Eastern churches existed until just a few years ago. I've since attended the Byzantine, Ukrainian, Syro-Malabar, and Maronite masses. All distinct in their own ways but still Catholic. Now I want to see more. The Catholic Church is lot more rich and vast than I thought.

@@everesiamwanza6709 Although we are Christians, many still have not forgiven the fourth crusaders for the ran-sacking of Constantinople. The sheer barbarism of the crusaders went unmatched even when the Turks conquered Constantinople. It weakened the Byzantines so much, that they fell to the Turks later. We then had to endure 500 years of Muslim oppression. All because of the Catholics. But as Christians, we should forgive them. I have. But you are correct, many have not.
I am a Roman Catholic. I remember the Latin mass as a young boy. Lately I had been reading and watching videos of the monks of Mt. Athos and Father Lazarus el-Anthony. My wife is in the hospital. Sunday, as I was standing outside the hospital, i heard church bells down the street. I went to see what church it was and I found it was a Byzantine Catholic Church. I felt compelled to go in. The service was so beautiful I fought back tears at times. I truly believe God called me to go there and I found my church.

The Latin mass is well and live. Find one that is independent from Rome since Rome is in apostasy. A catholic of any rite should go back ONLY AND WHEN the Church in Rome CONVERTS FROM MODERNISM.
My Athos has twenty monasteries over a thousand years old !
In the CREED she read that THE SPIRIT PROCEEDS FROM THE FATHER AND IS REVERED WITH THE FATHER AND SON! So no filioqve was mentioned here.

if you are refering to my comments I was only trying to defend the Church. Sometimes it's hard to find the just middle. Harsh words don't always mean that there is no love behind them. When Christ talked to the Pharisees he wasn't exactly sweet. Yet I am sure he loved them all the same.

Thanks for making this. I didn't know the Byzantine rite was so different from the Roman rite, but it is also very beautiful. I have always felt a special attraction to the icons of the Eastern tradition. There is an Eastern Catholic Church where I live. Maybe I will go to mass there someday.
Please do explore the eastern rites of the church. So many Catholics don't know there's any other rites in communion with the Holy See.

Renee, I am a Indonesian Roman Catholic living in Jakarta. I love the reunion of both Western and Eastern rites. I do not mind using either Roman or Eastern one. I just hope we can build dan develop our Church together under one Pontiff 😇

Thank you for this beautiful and straightforward introduction to the Eastern Catholic liturgical tradition. I was born into a Roman Catholic family, left the Church, and eventually came back to the Roman Catholic Church. But I re-entered through the Eastern door, becoming Eastern Orthodox for a decade before returning to full communion with Rome. I am so grateful for the beauty and reverence that I found among our Eastern Orthodox brothers and sisters, and I found no substantial difference (except the acknowledgement of the papacy) when I later worshipped with a Byzantine Catholic Church. I continue to pray in the Eastern manner in my personal prayers and feel every bit as much at home among the Eastern Catholics as among those of the Roman rite. I wish I could say that I have found the Eastern Orthodox to be as tenderly affectionate toward their Catholic brothers and sisters, but alas, among them I have often encountered misunderstanding and mistrust toward Christians in communion with Rome, both Eastern and Roman Catholic. Let us continue to work and pray for the union of all.

Thank you for taking the time to prepare this video. I am an Orthodox priest, and so I too share your great love of the Divine Liturgy. Orthodoxy implies not only right belief, but also right worship; and the Divine Liturgy embodies this ideal of worshiping God in a truly beautiful way. Since you asked for comments I prepared a few, please forgive the wall of text.
#3 Though it is true that anathemas against individual persons were issued in 1054, it is an oversimplification to date the split to this time. This is in part because the anathemas were not against the whole churches, but against the patriarch and the papal legates. Functionally the churches, both east and west, still acted together on many things; though, to be sure, tensions were mounting. It is not until 1204, with the sacking of Constantinople, that the split is solidified. But to be fair, due to political strife and recent wars, westerners (and therefore many Catholics) had been slaughtered in 1182 at Constantinople, so there was blood on both sides. It should be noted also, that the mutual anathemas were lifted by Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras 50 years ago. In fact Pope Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew recently met in remembrance of that occasion.
#9 The western church originally used leaven bread as well, but later changed to unleaven. This was one of the major points of contention in the disputes between the east and west which resulted in the schism.
#9 During Proskomedia (the preparation of the Gifts) the entire Church is represented on the Diskos. Of Course there is Christ, the Lamb, then to His right is the Theotokos, to His left the nine ranks of angels or saints; thus all the church triumphant is represented. Then a large particle is taken out for the ruling hierarch (I would assume you would take out a piece for Pope Francis?) and another large one for the whole living church. Then individual particles are taken out with the name of each person of the parish or others to be prayed for. Another large particle is removed for all the departed, then again departed are mentioned by name as a particle is taken for each. Finally a last particle is taken out for the priest who is serving. When it is time for communion, only part of the lamb is put in the chalice and not the particles representing the rest of the church. Finally, after communion, the priest prays that all those remembered on the diskos be forgiven by Christ’s blood and the prayers of His saints as they are all then put into the chalice: So the whole Church is brought together in Christ. There is deep beauty in every part of the preparation of the gifts.
#20 Though it is not that important, this should be corrected. The whole Catholic church does not read the same readings each day. The assigned daily readings for the Byzantines are different than the Romans. Current Roman practice was revised in the Second Vatican Council from a single year cycle to be a three year cycle. (Though even that single year cycle differs from the Byzantines). Byzantines should still be on a one year cycle. Byzantine Catholics are also split on when they celebrate Easter with some celebrating it on the date set by the First Ecumenical Council, while others on the date set by Pope Gregory XIII. This affects not only the readings for that day since most readings are connected to the date of Pascha. Thus, not even the Byzantine Catholics among themselves all read the same thing each day.
#24 When during the Great Entrance “all Orthodox Christians” are prayed for, that is not a specific intention for the Orthodox who are not in communion with Rome as a separate group. It is the traditional final petition for the faithful that even the Orthodox themselves say.
#27 The Orthodox also believe in “One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church”, and include it in the Creed. From the way it was pointed out in the video it seemed to imply that was different.
The only difference in the Creed is of course the addition of the “filioque”, or the idea that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father “and the Son.” The addition of the filioque by the Roman Church began in what is now Spain in the 400s. It was added despite the express written instructions contained in the Third Ecumenical Council, and also against the wish of the Pope. Even as it spread through the western church it was not used in Rome. Two great silver shields were commissioned by Pope Leo III inscribed both in Latin and in Greek with the original creed and hung in St. Peter’s. It was not until 1014 that Pope Benedict VIII, responding to the request of Henry II, began to use the filioque. It is after Rome stops resisting the addition to the Creed that the East’s concern becomes very great, contributing to the confrontation 40 years latter in 1054. Exacerbating the issue was that when translated to Greek, the filioque necessitated a double procession of the Holy Spirit, a sense that was not explicit in the Latin. The issue of the procession of the Holy Spirit would be revisited in the Council of Florence 400 years later, but that is a whole other piece of history.

I love this so much. Today, I went to my first Latin Tridentine High Mass. It was so beautiful. And it makes me want to go to it more, but also participate in more tradition, especially the Eastern liturgies. I plan to go one day to an Eastern Catholic Church in Chicago and experience the Divine Liturgy that our Eastern brothers and sisters use :)! What a gift is it. The prayers you said truly touch my heart and if only I can say it in the Divine Liturgy, which I will one day, I will praise the Holy Trinity and Jesus/God our Saviour in a way I never did before in the Mass (Novus Ordo particurally). Question: I have been comparing videos of the Liturgy of Byzantine Rite and the Roman "Tridentine" Mass-each is beautiful but different--do you think the Romans put too much emphasis on elaborate choreography of gestures and movements? I am a Roman Catholic-have been to both types of liturgies although mostly in the last 45 years the Novus Ordo.
To answer my own question: yes-a bit too elaborate.
The vestments of the Latin Mass are great but nobody beats the Byzantines for vestments. I have to give the nod to the Romans on music-you can't beat that Gregorian chant. Thanks.

This video was actually on the official website of a Ruthenian-Greek Catholic Church I went to.
I was baptized in the Melkite Greek Catholic Church and did all my other sacraments in the Catholic Church. I actually learned that recently as I was born in Venezuela (all we say there is the Catholic Church, regardless of rites) and because I was baptized as an infant. Now I live in San Diego and one day, I was driving on the 805 and I saw the top of a church and I felt God saying: go to that church. I didn’t go right away. As a matter of fact, I went just this week and that first revelation happened a few months ago. When I went, I felt right at home. It almost felt like the Holy Spirit saying: this is where you belong. I know still is the same catholic faith but expressed differently. I told my wife that I’d love to go to a Devine Liturgy but she is against it. I do feel the Holy Spirit pulling me in switching rites. Please brothers and sisters in Christ, pray for me so the Lord can help me discern this call. 🙏

The rites are the same that Catholics Byzantine church. According what I had had read the jesuits went to Rusia because they were expelled by the Pope. The Tsaritsyn Catherine gave them protection and them in grateful they went to Ucrania to cause a division in the Orthodox Church and they converted to split from the orthodox to Rome. What ungrateful ? That happens when you invited others people to your house, they cause problems and still from you.😡😡😢😢

Thank you for the video. I had always, somewhat arrogantly considered myself knowledgeable of Catholicism. I know now that it was from my colloquial experience in the Latin Rites. Since watching this video the first time 6 weeks ago, I have been attending Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church. In the Latin Rites it seems as though an informal schism between Traditionalist (me) and the Modernist. Since attending at Our Lady of Lebanon, I have experienced no distractions, or witnessed the profanity of communion in the hand. To confess, I have been a bigot in believing the Latin Rite was the only Catholic Church that I was allowed to attend. The Catholic Church is a federation of 22 rites that I will be welcomed to. They are far from Christ.
We also have them in the Catholic Church, we call them "Rad-Trads."
Rad-Trads and hyperdox fundamentalists - two peas in a pod, two sides of the same coin. They claim to follow Christ yet don't have the self awareness to realize they act in the exact same way as the Pharisees who instigated the condemnation of Christ, whitwashes tombs and blind guides, straining out gnats yet swallowing camels.

I am a Lifelong Latin Rite Catholic who was introduced to the Divine Liturgy by a Fellow Latin Mass Traditionalist. The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom has aided me in my understanding of Both the Tridentine Latin Mass and the Ordinary Form Mass, also called Novus Ordo Missae, particularly the Ordinary Form of Mass, where the General Intercessions(Prayers Of The Faithful) are prayed before the Nicene Creed, as well as the Doxology after The Our Father and Standing to receive Holy Communion.

I have attended The Divine Liturgy in the Eastern Church but am Latin rite. I’m planning attending Divine Liturgy this weekend after watching this. There is such a reverence in the Divine Liturgy.

Vatican II was wonderful for the Eastern churches in communion with Rome!! The council encouraged us to reclaim our traditions and to get rid of Latinizations. It forced even those bishops who were very happy with the status quo to change.Granted that change has taken quite some time for some of the churches(and is still going on in some),but without the push from Vatican II it probably never would have happened.It called for Byzantines to be bridge from the Western Church to the Orthodox.
RebornPure Catholic It’s true that Vatican II has some good points, but the overall impact was not good. It’s my own personal opinion. And a lot of why I chose to leave has ended up being rooted in Vatican II. Ultimately, it’s my service to God that matters most, not solve theological issues.

I am a Roman rite Catholic, but tomorrow I will be attending a Byzantine Liturgy for the first time! This video helps me have at least a little idea of what to expect. It will definitely be a new experience, but I am looking forward to it!
Thank you so much for the video Renee. I have always been curios about the Eastern Rites of our Catholic faith but never was able to find such clear information on the Liturgy before now. I do find it intriguing to see such similarities between the Extraordinary Form of the Mass and this celebration of the Liturgy, but then of course we are "One Universal Church" after all. Now all I have to do is convince my parents to let us take a "field trip" and visit the many different Rites that we have represented in our diocese. Interestingly though I hear our bishop with be offering a Traditional Byzantine Liturgy soon which is something to look forward to. I have to say that having a Bishop who knows how to preform the Ordinary, Extraordinary and Byzantine Liturgies is amazing!

Renee I can relate to your appreciation of the beauty of this traditional liturgy in that I was blown away last week as I read and followed through a missal during a Latin Mass. When I was young my friend was Ukrainian Catholic and I had the honor of attending the Liturgy. At the time it seemed so fastly different from the Roman Mass but looking at it through older eyes I see how strikingly simular the two are. Thank you for this video.
The "Deacon Doors", as you say, are also known as the "North Door" and "South Door", as most churches face to the east. Women should never enter the sanctuary but sometimes it is necessary for cleaning.

I'm glad there is an Eastern Church near me. I think I will attend that one on Sundays, and my Roman Church on weekdays.

I've been standing at the fork in road between Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox for several years with my feet firmly planted in cement. Byzantine Catholicism seems like it would be the best of each.

I was baptized as a Catholic and was blessed to have a Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox act as my baptismal sponsors. I have a few fond memories of my Godfather and my mother (who converted to Catholicism when she married my dad and early on sang in a Greek Orthodox church while attending college) teaching me some of the prayers and customs of the Eastern rites. My dad would tell me these were the same prayers used in the Roman rite before the Great Schism. Knowing my dad was a bit of a history buff, my Godfather teased him and asked facetiously, "And what would you know about the Great Schism, Ben?" And my dad replied with a smirk, "It was very schismatic!" LOL

Did anybody hear about the cross-dresser who showed up at Mass? After he caught sight of one of the priests, richly clad in his vestments and swinging his incenser back and forth, filling the whole sanctuary with incense smoke, the transvestite called out to him and said, "That dress is a real knockout, honey, but you better be careful...I think your purse is on fire..." LOL
I told my brother (who used to be an acolyte when he was young, but due to all the standing and sitting, plus taking in a few whiffs of that incense smoke made him ill) this joke, which he thought was funny. And some years later, when my nieces were being confirmed and my whole family was there. My brother and I noticed there was one priest we thought had an incense fetish of sorts because of his use for the stuff...LOL Anyway, during the service, I noticed my brother's face and eyes getting all red and glassy, he grabbed the back of one pew rocking back and forth very slowly. I then whispered in his ear, "Ah, Joe, I hate to say this, but I think his purse is on fire!" LOL He looked at me as though he was either going to throw up or burst out laughing!" In the meantime, my mother looked at me and whispered, "What's so funny?" And I told her (she too had heard the joke also) and I told her what I told my brother as I pointed towards the priest, "Mom, his purse is on fire!" Her eyes were tearing as she too tried to keep a straight face while at the same time she tried to shush me. And as for my boyfriend, I was about to tell him as well as he maintained an air of calm and coolness telling me to quit or he would pull a Ralph Kramden-style version of sending ME to the Moon! LOL You can't say there's no such thing as a dull moment during Mass, though. LOL
Another thing...I told some of my priest-friends that joke also and they too found that quite amusing too! You can't say even priests have a sense of humor! In the words of St Teresa of Avila, "Deliver me from sullen-faced saints, O Lord!"

I have the heritage of both, the Syro Malabar (Liturgy of Mar Addai and Mar Mari - disciples of St.Thomas) and Syro Malankara ( Liturgy of St James ) Catholic Churches , from Kerala, India. Love my Syrian Catholic heritage and the One , True Catholic Apostolic Church. We have the same sequence in the liturgy and we invoke the Mother of God and Her intercession many times in the Holy Mass .
in order to be a perfect 'bridge' between the orthodox and the rome,the ways of the Byzantine's had to be brought back exactly to the ways of the completely unchanged Orthodox.Do you see? Vatican II tried to make coming back with the Roman Pontiff more agreeable for Orthodox.So the Pope ordered the Eastern Catholics to go back to the complete traditional original of old so it would appeal to Orthodox and draw them back in communion. :)wonderful moment in history for the Eastern Catholic Churches
@Dustin Neely that is all extremely wrong. And no, they are not in opposition to one another, but can truly be understood in harmony, as they should. The Palamas vs Aquinas debate becomes no longer a debate of you understand that they were teaching on different subjects.
For this to be possible, you must recognise the Truth that lies underneath the external appearances, like the barriers of language.
For example, when Aquinas says God is "pure Act", it is because utilizes a Aristotelian language, in which Act is opposed to Potentia. In English this would be better translated as "Being" and "Becoming" respectively, meaning that God is beyond all potentiality, because he realizes perfectly in Himself all Being (there aren't any latent potencies) therefore He is pure Being. What is interesting here is that the word Being in Latin is an equivalent of the greek rooted word "Essence". Now all of this is explained by Aquinas, and he still agrees even more with Palamas, since he also says that "one can only know God through his actions"; in this latter case, action is then truly used in the more usual sense of the word, and is a Latin word equivalent to the Greek "energy", in which he is basically saying one can only know God through his energies. Aquinas know fully well that God is the immovable mover, therefore he doesn't "act" in the ordinary sense of the word, but rather is the cause of action. Since Saint Thomas makes himself clear that that is the case, the meaning of "God is pure Act" can only be understood in the Aristotelian sense (Aquinas himself being an Aristotelian), that is, that God is pure Being/pure Essence.
Now I hope this clarifies some things and inspires you to see things more clearly. Do not take the apparent for the essencial, as it happens many times in such discussions, were language and the appropriate meaning and use of words is can make big differences.

Wonderful catechetical video on the Divine Liturgy! I'm in the process of converting to the Eastern Orthodox Church and can't help but notice that the liturgy of the Eastern Rite Catholic Church is almost identical to that of the Orthodox Church. You even recite in the creed that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father, rather than proceeding from the Father and the Son as those of the Latin Rite do.

The Byzantine Catholic Church came about when Byzantivm was in grave danger. The Emperor of Constantinople pleaded with Rome to send help, so that we may not be destroyed by the Turks. The pope basically said:
"Keep your traditions, keep your churches, and keep all inside them. But accept me as the head of your Church and I will help you."
He, unfortunately, agreed. The last years of Byzantivm were not Orthodox, and we fell to the Turks anyway.
A tragedy.
To say the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father does not mean or doesn't proceed from the Father and the Son 🙃
I wanted to say that this was really well put together. as a Latin rite Catholic, it is always nice to hear from our Eastern brethren. I once attended the Divine Liturgy at the the Greek Catholic College of Sant' Athanasio in Rome on the his feast day. It was a case of MIND = BLOWN. it was Chanted by the seminarians of the College and a Bishop lead(?) the service. it is incredible to see howmuch is in common with ALL the Rites of the Catholic Church. Minor notes:
#27 - In the Nicene creed, "catholic" means universal. Even my protestant friends say the creed and say catholic church.
- In the part of the liturgy where you pray for the Orthodox, I think that's also done in the Orthodox Christian church liturgy (they pray for Orthodox, they don't pray for the Roman Catholic or Eastern Catholic churches), so I think it's just to mean right-believing Christians/Catholics not so much a sense of ecumenism.
Technical suggestion:
Before you start the video I suggest focusing the camera on where you will be standing, then turn off the autofocus so it doesn't refocus somewhere else when you start the video.
This is great and well explained of our Byzantine liturgy. I was a Cantor here at Sts. Peter and Pauls church in Granville Ny. Our priest died about 3 years ago and the doors have been locked. My heart aches for the people that are left here that want to go to mass but we all now know it will not happen again. My father was a cantor here for 50 years and he died Easter morning just before sunrise service in 1988, he was to be presented with a large plaque from the Bishop as a surprise for all his years of service but died of a sudden heart attack just a few hours before service. My heart is saddened that the church has forgotten about us and our tiny community. The church was built in 1904 and burned in 1943 from a lightening strike, rebuilt and stands silent today. Oh the memories... sometimes I go and just sit on the steps and can here my fathers voice with the whole congregation in joyous singing of praise to God.
