Is Kia's EV9 -FINALLY- The 3-Row EV You've Been Waiting For? Almost, & Here's Why...

  • Making a boxy EV efficient is hard. Making a big, boxy EV efficient and "affordable" is a herculean task and that's why the EV9 stretches the definition of "efficient" and "affordable." What do I mean? Well, if you want the flashy models you've been seeing on the review circuit, they are about $78,000. If you want "300 miles of range"... Well, you won't realistically find it here if you're talking road trip range, but the model with 305 miles of EPA range is going to be quite a bit more expensive than a Telluride at $59,200 plus destination. Ouch. For that you could buy a Leaf AND a Telluride. Price tag aside the EV9 is a great EV, and it has a great deal going for it: it's the roomiest 3-row EV in America excluding full sized vans. But... There's competition on the horizon in the form of Hyundai's own Ioniq 9, the ID Buzz and plenty of others....

    Great video as always. I compared to EV9, R1S, and EX90 (with all info available) and EV9 won out for me. Biggest factor, interior space and car seats. I'm totally happy with the idea that it's basically an EV mini-van because that is exactly what I need. Rivian is cool but nowhere close on interior space and things that matter to me. FYI, i have the GT-Line but you can now get these way under MSRP, FYI.

    I will also add that Kia's warranty is insane. I've hard things replaced on my EV6 and it was all covered under warranty. Having that peace of mind full coverage for 5 years and then the drivetrain for 10 year is just unbeatable.

    18:13 the arm rest padding in the ioniq 5 was PERFECT, DOOR PADDING AND CENTER CONSOLE Padding were SYMMETRICAL, BROAD and ergonomic for driver comfort. No other new Hyundai/ kia / Genesis seems to be focusing on that level of passing any more ? What's going on ?

    I find the EV9 very interesting. We are at the point in our lives where we really don’t need a 3 row SUV, but if my kids were very young I would very much consider it. That said, this is a family vehicle and lots of families use their main family vehicle for long road trips. As the current owner of a BMW i4, I am not sure I would want to haul my family 10 hours across 3 or 4 charging stops on a family vacation. It is not that charging stations can’t be found, it is that the quality of those stations, both in terms of charging time and quality/safety of the surrounding area, is an issue. I really would not want to be stuck in a Walmart parking lot with three small kids for 30-45 minutes, 3 or 4 times over a 10 to 12 especially if a decent food and bathroom facility could not be easily and safely accessed.

This is going to be my wife’s primary vehicle and she is not a fan of the Rivian look, so we are in on this one. Btw, you can press the “+” button on the hard to see climate control screen and it will open up a full climate menu on the main screen!

    Alex, thank you so much. Your approach to these videos is just perfect. I love all the attention to detail in every point you address. It's clear you really do your homework, even for an off-hand remark (e.g. the insurance cost that you called around to multiple insurers for multiple cars to compare). Your delivery style is excellent: matter-of-fact, clear, concise, and unbiased. You make the whole thing look effortless. Keep up the great work!

    Only miss is the swivel-around second row seats. I get that NA regulations likely dictate the way it is, but that’s a big bummer for a limo like experience for back seat passengers.

  • @pinaklonkar
    @pinaklonkar Před 2 měsíci +3

    Excellent review as always. The issue with R1S is the abysmal second row leg room. 36.6” is less than the second row in Mach E. And I’m not even talking about no CarPlay no apps (in a camping focused SUV)…go figure. I know Rivian has a cult following but it’s baffling to me how they’ve just left out some of these things. It drives fine, has lots of tech but not nearly as much customization and quirky tech that EV9 is packed with sans built in dash camera. EV9 was the first larger EUV that impressed me to the core with how it drove. I think the 270-280 mile EPA range is really the only downside of the EV9 AWD trims even though folks are able to get close to 300 miles on road trips in eco mode. The price is gonna come down in a year.

    This was a great review. I’ve been watching ev9 reviews for weeks and this is by far the best one. I went with the EV9 GT over the R1S because it’s about 10 to 15k cheaper. They had 7,500 rebate and I got another 3.5 off of msrp. I also didn’t lease but bought it out right. The only way to get the 7500 credit on the r1s is to lease and I want to own the car not lease.

    I really wish they had made the third row three seats, this has all the makings of a perfect XL car for rideshare, but losing a seatbelt makes that much more challenging (and in particular makes you require the 2nd-row bench for it to qualify). By the way I really hope you eventually review the version of this car regular people are actually going to want, which is the RWD long range. I find the obsession people have with high torque to be inane, I like to not have to buy new tires every 5 seconds.

    I traded my EV6 in a couple of months ago and got a Light LR EV9. There's not really much about the GT Line I would want, other than the seat memory and the HUD, and I'd rather have the range. Enjoying it so far. Been on 1 road trip so far. Not too far, about 250 miles each way, but I have several coming up. One in a couple of weeks will be 400 miles each way, and later this summer I'm driving cross country, so about 2100 miles each way. I didn't really get to take advantage of the highway assist on the first trip, almost no interstate travel on that one, but the other 2 I have coming up are almost exclusively interstate. I've loved that feature in the times I've gotten to use it, can't wait to be able to use it on long trips.
    Keep up the awesome reviews Alex. You are pretty much my go to source when I'm EV shopping.

    I'm really looking forward to the EX90 because of the air suspension and all the similarities to the Kia EV9. I'm kind of sad that I won't get the much more room offered by the Kia EV9 but I don't want to take my $70k+ EV SUV to a Kia stealership.
    Genesis' version of the EV9 is something I am looking forward to seeing (just not the lack of Genesis standalone dealerships). Not sure if the Ioniq 9 will have what the EX90 has (air suspension, LIDAR, etc.). Spy shots show the Ioniq 9 is going to be less practical in the rear so it might be more similar to the EX90.
    The LIDAR is the biggest difference and the big question. I'm hoping we'll see Kia/Hyundai/Genesis bring it back on theirs. I am very interested in how Volvo will or will not use LIDAR too since it's part of the reason why the EX90 launch has been botched/delayed so much.
    I just can't stand how both the EX90 and EV9 have almost no buttons. I like that the EV9 has a few dedicated buttons for HVAC but they're both in dire need of more dedicated physical buttons.

    So if that is the trend, i will have no choice, but to opt for kia/ Genesis instead of Hyundai.😢

    Why is no one criticizing the need for a two speed transmission for overdrive from 45 to 90 mph like Porsche electric do. I REMEMBER AS A KID RIDING in my aunts 1953 Chevy 6 with two speed power glide transmission, ESSENTIALLY A BIG SLUSH OMATIC TORQUE CONVERTER STARING IN HIGH GEAR AND GOING TO OVERDRIVE AT 45 mph .
    Now the these electric motors above 4500 rpm(45 mph) dramatically lose magnetic switching efficiency ( which has a fixed time cycle.) and huge centripetal energy flywheel losses from a heavy rotor ( losses go up as the Cube of the RPM)
    Manufacturers do not want you to think about it and know about it and demand an overdrive transmission at 50% shift at about 55 mph.
    Long live 18 in wheels and tires ( less centripetal losses) and with high carbon rubber tires to get past 18,000 miles for tires ( I’d-4 experience actual)

    Theres a lot to like about the EV9 but honesty the Rivian R1S is a similar price in upper trims and offers a lot more features - adaptive air suspension, bigger/nicer screens, bigger frunk, better functioning (and free) app with regular software updates, better ground clearance with offroad capabilities.
    The EV9 gets a couple things in upper trims the Rivian doesnt, namely a HUD, relaxation seats and the digital mirror.
    Overall the interior of the Rivian is just a much nicer looking quality interior as well. It also has significantly better range and performance.

    Rivian R1S is no competition for the EV9, why? One doesn't have to worry about what happens if the car company that made your car goes bankrupt. In the case of Rivian, this is a real concern, in the case of Kia/Hyundai, there is no risk of bankruptcy. I just don't want to take that risk, and don't think consumers should be asked to bear that risk.

      It's not double. Its about $20K more. You do save significantly on gas and maintenance, and get better performance compared to the Telluride.

    • @spenceralridge4958
      @spenceralridge4958 Před 2 měsíci +12

      And that is why you are not the target market. And, it is no where close to “pretty much double of a nice Telluride”. It starts at around 57K. The cheapest Telluride starts at about 37K. So, yes, it is much more expensive, but is ain’t twice as much. For some folks that differential is worth it. For you, it is clearly not. But don’t lie to make your point, just let folks decide for themselves if the value proposition works for them.

    Damn, 60-80 grand is dumb. I also hate on all vehicles over 30,000 lol. Only rich people get these cars. When will car companies understand that the majority of Americans are lower middle class and preying on the dumb people who get this expensive crap significantly reduces the people that will buy this thing.

    Kia is recalling 427K Tellurides (all years) due to a rolling away risk. Kia is also recalling Tellurides built between October 2023 and December 2023 due to faulty valve springs. Only fix is total engine replacement for a 3 month old vehicle. Imagine spending $50K+ and even some markup and you're told you need a new engine not 4 months later!
    Please do your due diligence before spending $50K+ on these new Kias and Hyundais. I know Alex and all the auto journalists love them, but they are proving to be quite problematic and the notion that Kia/Hyundai has changed for the better, is proving to be not true. Also, the new Santa Fe uses the same problematic DCT found in the Sorrento and the Car Confections guys had to have their entire transmission replaced with only 27 miles!

      "Kia is recalling 427K Tellurides (all years) due to a rolling away risk. "
      Of which only 16 had the issue that led to the recall.
      "Kia is also recalling Tellurides built between October 2023 and December 2023 due to faulty valve springs. Only fix is total engine replacement for a 3 month old vehicle."
      False and/or misleading. Kia says the fix is replace the sub assembly of the engine.
      In short, your comment is more bullsht than substance, and even Toyota is having problems too. Don't even get me started on how many recalls it took to fix their suspensions on RAV4s.

    • @JDubbs07
      @JDubbs07 Před 2 měsíci +8

      Did you actually read about both recalls though? Of the 427k Tellurides they're recalling (5 model years), after a 2 YEAR investigation they only identified 16 vehicles with a reported problem, only 6 of which with actual damage. This recall is more of a proactive inspection of vehicles than sign of actual widespread problems.
      In the case of the valve springs, reviewing the NHTSA timeline report shows that within the span of 2.5 months they were able to collect damaged engines, perform literal electron microscopy on them, and traced the problem back to a supplier who made all the faulty springs on the same day. That's pretty damn impressive.
      So are they still working out the kinks? Sure. Between the two of them, H/K would probably benefit most from tighter supplier-level QC. But it's not like they aren't doing their due diligence.
