Does he ever use the bolt to prime when firing around corners to try and minimize self-exposure? It is still more situational than a reload, but I can see that being another use for it.

i used to with the older MK 1, but generally I dodge and not using the pump action is not too much surface area reduction,

My Mad Slammer serves me pretty well. Get a lot of long range tags when I single fire and the slam fire helps for up close
