  • In this video I show some easy steps you can take to check if your Freon is low in your air-conditioning system. if your air conditioner is turned on but the air is warm coming out the vents this video may help you. If you are concerned that the Freon level in your air conditioner might be low this video can help you out. If you feel that your air conditioner is not working correctly this video may help you out.

Troubleshooting my HVAC system as AC is not working - have tested everything and no issues with compressor. Outdoor unit fan works, seems like compressor is not. Changed the capacitors(start and run), compressor pipe got cold for a few mins and then nothing(no condensation and not any more cold). Drain switch is not tripped, trap has been cleaned too. Thermostat is sending voltage(24VAC) and contactor is working well too. Any idea why compressor is not working and line is not getting cold? Thank you.

So over the last few weeks we've been having an air conditioner that seems to struggle to get below 79°. This morning it was 84 in the house and I turn the air conditioner on and the temperature out of the vents was 63°. So I would say that that's within a good range.
Later in the day we noticed it still wasn't cooling and I went out there and checked and the compressor was off but the fan was running. So we shut down the system gave it a rest and I started to back up and it ran but the temperature coming out of the unit when the house is still luckily 84 was about 72 for a while and now it slowly been dropping and is about 67° which is not as good as before and below the 16 to 22° difference.
I'm an electrician and often it's actually the run capacitor that fails. My understanding is that if it just sort of shuts off randomly and struggles it could be the run capacitor which I have a replacement that I could throw at it.
But this unit every few years needs freon which means I'm sure it has a small leak. We've never had the money to be able to fix it I'm always either out of work and now I had two strokes so I'm not even working and this has to happen now.
There's no ice build up on the line outside. And this morning when I noticed it wasn't cooling despite the cool temperature coming out I actually tore apart it's a split system so inside I cleaned out the coils but there was no ice buildup there was a little bit of mud and hair and stuff in there from dirt and I cleaned it all up nice and clean but in the past when it's low I've seen ice build up there restricting flow out of the vents but that does not seem to be a problem either. This almost would indicate to me that it is not a freon problem this time.
I suspect I don't know when the compressor shut off potentially due to the run capacitor and we're in bed and it's just running and running. But there's no ice buildup and it's kind of randomly shutting off and not cooling. The amperage appears balanced no unusual voltage or anything like that.
And as I sit here right now I just heard the compressor go out again but the fan is running outside so I think I'm going to throw a run capacitor at it right now and see if that helps
Any ideas or suggestions on this?

good details, my friend. Change out the capacitor since you already have one on hand. Shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes. With that said I’m not sure that that’s your problem. when your system does run is the suction line/thicker copper line cold and have condensate on it? I’m guessing you’re low on Freon again. The majority of Freon leaks come from one of two places. The service valves or the service Schrader valves. be sure that the service valves are fully opened. Also make sure that the caps that go on the Schrader valves are closed tightly. You might even consider putting some Teflon tape on those brass caps. how old is your system?
If your suction line is not getting ice cold, when the compressor is running, you probably need more Freon. Ask the technician if he will help to lock down those caps nice and tight for you. Again, Teflon tape helps a bunch. Good luck, my friend! Fingers crossed for you.

Good question. Can you tell if the compressor is running?
Most common reason for not to be running at this point would be a capacitor issue. Second, most common reason compressor issue. Third most common reason would be low or out of Freon. Usually If your system is low or out of Freon, there’s a leak.

@@checkitout2468I actually have the same issue as the original poster almost. My suction line gets ice cold and sweaty for a few seconds then goes to basically room temp after a few seconds.
The hvac guy said the Freon levels were good according to the gauges.
He’s suspecting an issue with the compressor even though we can hear it running.
      Thoughts?

Trying to troubleshoot my AC.....Suction line is cold and sweating and hot air is coming from fan on outside condenser but I still only have a 3 - 5 deg. drop in return air/temperature in my house ? I have flushed/cleaned the coils on the condenser but that didn't help.I checked the evaporator coil and it looks clean .I change the filter on the return regularly ..My unit is maybe 15 YRS old and the only thing I can't check is the Freon because I no longer have a set of gauges. I used to work as an HVAC Tech mostly heating and some A/C but that was 25 yrs ago and I have forgotten most of what I learned LOL. Am I missing something other than the Freon.

Consider buying a cheap temperature air gun to determine how cold is the air coming out of the registers? Put your hand up to each register. How’s the volume of air?
I’m wondering if some of the ductwork came apart in your attic or maybe dampeners are closed?

@@checkitout2468 Thanks for the reply.I have checked the air coming from the ceiling (vents) and it is lower than the temp outside but not much maybe 4 deg.and it should be more of a drop in temp.. I checked the attic and all the flex duct is connected .I do have to balance the ceiling vents as my someone else did it and it looks like he opened ever one wide open...like the one in the bathroom does not need to be wide open ...I'll keep at it

if your delta temperature is only 5F like you say: you need a service call. it *could* be that you are low on refrigerant, possibly because of a slow leak. a typical delta T is 20F. if the large refrigerant line coming from you compressor, as seen in the video, is not icy cold and sweaty then that is no good - service call is needed
