Owen Jones meets Deutschland 83 star Jonas Nay | 'We have a responsibility towards refugees'

- čas přidán 21. 02. 2016
- Jonas Nay, unlike his character Martin Rauch, can play the piano and attempts to teach me the theme tune to this years hit TV series. Jonas talks about how much Germany has changed in a generation and his concerns about the rise of the far right in Europe. We also had a little sing-song inspired by the Deutschland 83 sound track: Sting's, Every Breath You Take.
Deutschland 83 is available now in full and for free at All4.com/WalterPresents

Owen, you should do more videos of you being overwhelmed by attractive men.
I think Owen interviewing attractive men should be a new series
+paul spud its great
This interview is literally like watching a first date
+Emily Chandler Interviewing this guy for kicks sounds like an awesome first date.
Sam Barkley Don't pity the dead, pity the living, but above all pity those that live without love. :-)
Dale Jackson I love logic
+Dale Jackson literally any excuse for a Harry Potter reference?
Twohigify Of course! ;) It's what I live for!
You definitely have a crush on Jonas, it's cute to watch! ;) Great interview as always!
+welcometothesuck Who doesn't? He's gorgeous! :)
adeuk3 Yep I'm a 32 woman and I am having major fangirl moments...I'd thought I'd grown out of all that to be honest...I was wrong hehe!
It's actually quite sad that Deutschland 83 wasn't a big hit here in Germany. I can only speek for myself but maybe other people did not watch it for the same reason: I didn't watch it simply because it was on the (commercial) channel RTL. They usually broadcast/produce action movies and all kinds of dumb shows. I would never have expected anything good on that channel and haven't watched anything on it for about 10 years.
In addition, we already had a quite successful series about life in East-Germany during the 80ies on a public channel: Weissensee (ARD). Or maybe we already had enough films and series about this topic (from dead serious ones to hilariously funny ones).
I can also imagine that those people from the eastern part of Germany who are now against any aid for refugees don't want to be reminded of their own past.
It might just have been the wrong time to broadcast this show.
I agree. I just loved the series and just don't understand some of the negative comments on Amazon Prime from some viewers (with German names - so assuming they're German viewers). You mentioned some reasons that make sense I think. I would love to see the funny ones around that theme - can you recommend some? thanks
Come on though, the plot was more full of holes than Emmenthaler cheese. So much was factually wrong, from how quickly he was ready to pose as a West German Lieutenant, to how suddenly he and the General's sons - as young Lieutenants in the Signals (Fermeldertruppen) found themselves at the centre of every world event at the time - through the Carlos the Jackal bomb side story which had nothing to do with the main plot and was completely unbelievable - to the radio reporter when he was on the run saying anyone with any info should report it to the Bundespolizei....in 1983, 20 years before they existed lol. (It was BGS then). Even a British guy like me could see that it wasn't realistic so obviously a German with half a braincell would not have watched more than the first episode before giving up in exasperation, either that or thinking it was a comedy.
@@simonh6371 plot holes may be there but they were quickly filled with amazing acting, script and actual historic facts that really make you see and feel how terrifying and brutal those times were and that while at the same time really having a blast watching it. I have nothing but admiration for all of the amazing seasons of Deutschland. Wishing for more.
@@ravesquad6607 I’m totally obsessed with it, I do think that the plot sometimes does get a bit too convoluted and complicated, but that is overshadowed by the actors’ amazing work, terrific production design and amazing soundtrack, the show is brilliant.
We all know what happened after this interview
Jonas issued a restraining order
Wait, this isn't the video version for the Guardian's blind date section? Haha
lel
+Ben Sturrock I was wondering why they weren't wearing Google Glasses...
But the big question is: will you be going on another date?!
What an absolute treat! Love Deutschland 83, and Jonas is a great actor.
Aww they'd make the cutest little couple.
No .. they look like siblings 👀
Is Jonas straight?
@@robertfraser9873 yes
Anybody else shipping these 2? Owen is like a little school boy with a crush haha love it!
Jonas is straight
Great interview. It is good to find out what a young European thinks. Perhaps we should have more interviews of this kind, we may bond better with our Euro friends? He is so talented . . .
I’ve lived in Germany and Scotland, and I truly value the amazing and meaningful conversations I had with so many there. From all over, as Europe is a huge meeting pot, especially Germany!
Your videos are very artfully shot - it makes them even nicer to watch
The German is easier to understand than the damn Englishman lol
That's not surprising if you are german
I thought it was like a date myself and then read the comments! The duet on the piano
I don't get it, how does Owen show any attraction towards this dude? Jeez. It's like seeing a normal guy and girl chatting in the same age-range and screaming 'get a room!' just because of their genders and age.
+sithius99 It's not though; there's definitely something there.
TheYopogo
There's something there because you want something to be there. Simple as that.
Andrew Simpson that's how everyone looks at me. maybe I'm just a stud.
Sensational video, interesting camaraderie between the two of you without a doubt! Looking forward to Deutschland 86.
This is adorable
Watched this again and I'm crying at the bit from 7:20ish - "I think it went something like this?" *cue piano hammering*. Still my favourite.
Owen, you should interview German-Spanish actor Daniel Brühl, he has made some very political movies like Goodbye Lenin and Salvador,
Great interview, thanks!!
Wow Owen is totally crushing on this guy he clearly fancies him.☺
Loved the interview , Two great guys and it seems Jonas is not just a great actor but a decent young guy as well ....
Just binge watched 83 and 86. So excited for 89 👍🏻
The comment section, where people forget you're not single. Bless. Still need to watch the series but know I'll love it. Shame the interview wasn't longer. Always amazed that everybody can speak such great English and there's me not a word of non English. How boring of me
How do you know he's not single?
Try Spanish.. having done French and German it came really easily
great interview owen, deutschland 83 has been a fantastic series to watch l,d never heard of jonas nay before watching this program, but l can't wait for series 2,series 1 was gripping,l was only 13 in 1983 so didn't know what was going on in that part of the world, jonas is a talented young man with a bright career ahead of him.
Well done Owen! a really good video. It was nice you made it light hearted but also you talked about some serious issues.
Great Interview Owen , Do more Please
Cool video as usual, Owen. Can't wait for your talk in Sheffield on Monday :D
About the whole debate about feeling German versus feeling East/West German, I think that the fact that Jonas Nay grew up in former West Germany is quite significant. Not a German myself, but having studied and spoken to Germans about this, it seems like people from the former East Germany more often still feel like they're East German, not just German, even if they were born in the 90's. Despite the countries having been united for more than 25 years, there are still some significant economic differences between the former West and East Germany.
Nice interview, great show - yeah TV!
Owen, one of the last things I thought would pop up in the sub box. V. little english interviews with Jonas - was great to watch!
Loved Deutschland 83, great interview as always, love your sarcastic humour Owen! Although I thought I was seeing double, you and Jonas look so similar!
Surreal- Ronnie Scott's? Random venue? Great series look forward to Series 2
Dude you are crushing on him so hard HAHA brilliant
Awwww this is beautiful! How about a new video series "Owen Jones sings"?
Well I clearly have a type then! Love you two! That was awesome :-)
never mind the second series, will you guys be going on a second date?
Two of my most favourite young men!!
damn he speaks a very good english, he plays the piano, sings, acts, he's cute stopp
Love these two cute guys and Jonas Nay was so charming when playing the piano 😭❤️
Owen so has a crush on him
Is Jonas straight?
Hahaha oh, Owen... You ol' charmer! Was it your idea to make Jonas serenade you on the piano? We can see right through you! 😂
I live in eastern Germany and have had many conversations with local people about their lives before and after German reunification. What greatly surprised me initially is that most people who lived in the GDR liked the system because it delivered almost exactly the opposite of what theynow experience in the western model of society. Pre-unification, no one was without a job, all basic needs were very affordable - housing, food, transport, medical care. Of course some who fell foul of the control apparatus - the Stasi Museum in Leipzig reveals the scale and number of horrible acts committed. But the majority accepted restrictions since they believed socialism was delivering a fairer world.
of course just as most former citizens of the soviet union would say the same ideas, stabilty and garuntee of a low paid job, housing, food, transport and all basic needs if they were available at all were cheaper or at least appeared too be less expensive...
but the flip side too all that stability is much like the wells novel "all people are created equal, some are more equal than others, the party bosses lived like royalty, the common masses were fed endless propaganda and censorship, torture and restricted press were very common, democrcracy or even writing your own opinions was a death sentence"..
do not take my word for it,....ask those in DDR,soviet union , communist "cultural crimes were as bad as fascist ones, just seen as more acceptable or hidden behind a sense of stability and everyone having job security"... in simple no one had too push themselves too think,or do anything, the state provided everything, individualism was seen as a cancer or even a plague...
jardon Jones "ask those in DDR,soviet union , communist "cultural crimes were as bad as fascist ones, just seen as more acceptable or hidden behind a sense of stability and everyone having job security"... in simple no one had too push themselves too think,or do anything, the state provided everything, individualism was seen as a cancer or even a plague..."
There's a curious dichotomy; on the one hand I know that what you describe above is accurate; on the other, people here in eastern Germany, when I have asked them about life pre unification, don't mention these issue to any degree. There is in fact nostalgia about what they see as the good aspects of that period, especially the solidarity which existed between people.
I hold true to my original statement that on the whole, people preferred that form of socialism back then to the increasingly individualistic capitalism / consumerism model from the West. You mentioned that life being simpler then was a large part of the appeal and I think you are right.
yes a "simplistic view of the state providing everythiing, for the older generations is at best nice nostalgia, but for most the crimes were hidden"...
that is why hands down, the modern society that yes for all its flaws has no nostalgia, but change always scares people...everytime, gone has job security, no people are no longer dependent on a government, the individual is the king of society... this is not all bad...
much of it is fear of the unknown or hope for the future,,, the berlin wall is now down, germany is united....
it was a victory for mankind, not just germany when communist regimes were falling from "people power", walls were crashing down, people were uniting in a sense of hope for the future.... despite the UK exit of the EU, hope goes on, life is more complicated than ever, but it continues...
It's true that many former residents I've spoken to did actually quite like living in the ddr. It wasn't all about living in fear of the stasi as is depicted by westerners.
I meet Owen yesterday by the 02, he must have been puzzled by the screaming girls xD (there was a kpop concert haha)
Great interview Owen, he seems like a really nice guy. Love Deutschland 83. Very cute ;)
Lovely!
A great interview Owen
Is this an episode of first dates that never aired?
My libido just exploded seeing Jonas playing the Piano. and that wasn`t even a comlicated piece. I Fancy that handsome german man =D
Anyways great Interview =D
very good!
Owen is trying his best to impress Jonas! Don't blame him Jonas is GORGEOUS !
Love is in the air.
You should try and get an interview with Billy Bragg Owen! 😀😀
OMG Jonas Nay is so cute, committed and talented! :)
"We should sort this in Season 2..."
YESSSSSSSSSS COME ON.
I'm glad that he mentioned the fact that US/UK created this conflict and now we have to deal with this refugee crisis. This sudden refugee influx made far right popular throughout europe. What a mess they have created.
I have been deeply in lust with Owen for years and want to marry him. This was a difficult interview to watch - because Jonas is so stunning and is an Owen double.
I feel you dude
I ship it #Jowen ♥
Aw Owen, you're flirting so much!
Wow Jonas speaks perfect English
Owen's heart eyes... me too. Me too...
good interview ... Jonas and Owen; a match made in musical, immigrant crisis, police heaven ;-) (honestly, great points about various subjects) well done Owen
As an veteran american soldier I vividly remember the years we lived in fear of an East and West conflict , Deutschland 83 is amazing 😉 , can’t wait for 86 and 89 !
omg I love Deutschland 83 😍😍😍
Genuinely expecting Fred Sirieix to come round the corner at any point
never notice he has beautiful hands
Recently you've only been interviewing people you like or agree with. What happened to facing people you disagree with? Daniel Hannan would be a great interviewee!
Nice to see Owen admit he has a crush on Jonas at the beginning of the video.
That was so cutee
Jonas.. He is it ! x
Just to give you some kind of indication of how well Deutschland 83 was received...
One of its biggest fans worldwide was in fact Tom Hanks!😉👏👍
Oooooossh feel that First Date sexual tension! Love it! X
Jonas&Jones! Owen you didn't even try to hide your crush! Nice flirting! However, some of your questions were biased like dictatorship in the eastern bloc etc but the lad was smarter and opted for a more neutral response and overall gave good answers.
sv 93 You do realise that Owen Jones is a very left wing socialist verging on a communist so he would have approved of the communist regime in the former East Germany!
You two would make a cute couple.
Would love to see you meet Matt Forde
Jonas, awww
Which song did they sing at the end?
Owen's in luuuuurve :P
Jonas is cute, but I think Owen is more cute ;)
nooo! Owen has a terrible, lardy body and he's knock-kneed
NOOO! not in this universe!
@@rippedtanktop yeah I agree
Right I'm going to learn how to play an instrument, any instrument!
Hey Owen, love your channel! Was wondering what your thoughts were on something though... Do you think Corbyns Labour party could learn a lot in terms of how the portray themselves in the media by looking at the Sanders campaign in the US ?
SOOO cute
Obvious crush " Owen and Jonas up a tree "
Can't be bothered to watch this one because I've never even heard of the guy. How's Owen voting on 23rd June?
Without wishing to sound like a 13yo.... you so fancy him. Bless. :-)
It's weird and not so much in real life but Jonas Nay looks like my ex fiance who was an Uberleutnant in the Bundeswehr and Out was between 78 and 82 and in the program he really resembles my ex...maybe it's the uniform. I loved West and East Germany back then and I don't think the atmosphere is the same now!
he is so cute~
Yesterday, was just another ordinary day, I know it was sunday - but you know what mean, ooh hoo... but now it's today, and Owen has realesed another video - I haven't watched any of Deutschland 83, but I'm fairly aware of what went on... and besides I met many Germens when I was at Uni, ooh hoo... Just, there's too much drudgery already, I'm sure the sure show is realy good... I used to watch The Walking Dead, but now I can't even watch that either... I'm just waiting, waiting for brighter dayee yee aye yee aye "We are the world, we are the children. We have to wait until 2020 for change and hope it's not too late... we've got global warming, and endangered speices in delcine - we've got to make a better world for you and me!!!"
They look like brothers
Owen Jones is so British. Every facial expression is thought over. Fuck am I offending you am I listening too much or not enough PLEASE FEEL MY RESPECT. Amazing.
1 minute in and I already ship it.
You're such a flirt, Owen
Haha! Owen Jones, you flirt.

You two should of got a room!!!
Is it me or does Owen Jones sound exactly like Dr James Grime?
Look similar!!😎😎
Someone give me the popcorn. I thought I was delusional till I saw the other comments.
He is great though! :)
he's very cute and cool
