In this tutorial, I show you the PROPER way to replace the save batteries in your Gameboy and Gameboy Color game cartridges. There's a lot of misinformation and just plain awful so-called "tutorials" out there for this process already, so I decided to do my own and set the record straight once and for all.
I've got A LOT more Gameboy stuff on the way! :) I just needed to get this tutorial out of the way first. Enjoy, and let me know what you think!

Hey all, check out my updated version of this tutorial here: czcams.com/video/NyEXRXeuA5w/video.html After reviewing my old video and giving it some thought, I've decided to redo it and give some better instruction, as well as correct my mistakes from THIS video. Cheers, and thanks for watching! 🙂
It is help full
Hey I wanna ask you some thing , so recently l gave my gb games to a technician, they fixed the battery’s of the game but it was the wrong battery he replaced a Different one (CR 2032 ) so it is not saving , now should I give it to him and tell him to put the right battery again or will that harm my gb game
I hope that this video goes to the top of the search results when people are searching to fix their games.
Thank you
Gilhelmi Wow, thanks so much! 😍 And thanks for the sub!
It is now! I searched and it was first result!
Thank you! I've got to buy some tools and get my carts working again
R/whoosh
@@l_R-ru1zd wit and it's r/woooosh
In order to replace battery, we must go skydiving first
Bro yeah 😭😭😭
LMFAO
Yeah, don't cut corners
What show is that a reference to?
You have to be able to walk before you can run!
I recommend introducing fresh solder to the original solder beforehand, it's going to help with making it liquid way quicker cause You also introduce flux with the solder :) Also with a wick I always clean off the old solder. The problem with heating the solder for so long as You do is burning up all the flux which makes the solder less liquid. So I recommend having some extra flux at hand or a wick can also help in removing excess solder. Also tinning the tip of Your soldering iron helps for a cleaner result in general, but also using some alcohol to clean the tabs afterwards ensures You are left with nice clean pcb and joints. Thank You for making this video. Those solder less videos are really hard to watch!
Bálint Szabados Thanks for watching! :) I mentioned most of that in the video, but always good to have these tips in the comments as well. Thanks!
Yeah I Agree, It's really PAINFUL to watch videos that explain how to fix something without having to use a fucking solder gun. I can't stand NON-solder people and there need to just fix a ridiculously simple solution with a single piece of tape. And can you believe, that it works too? HOW INFURIATING.
@@chuckstieg It works, til they drop their game on the sidewalk and something gets knocked loose inside the cartridge.
@@scramblesthedeathdealer WRONG, with proper application of tape that shit closes up pretty tight. Nothing is moving around at all, no matter what happens to it. It's going to literally shatter from being dropped before the tape & battery position are compromised. Some people just get such a fucking hard-on from soldering anything they can't handle a more efficient and easier solution existing than soldering. I bet you solder your kid's report cards to your refrigerator too huh? magnets are so impractical.
Thanks for the tips
I'm really glad this wasn't clickbait, thanks man!
Useful too

Really educational video. I liked how you repeated the process many times to help us understand how to do it. Thanks
Very good video. I'd add that it's always nice to have some eye protection while applying heat near batteries. Didn't think about adding solder when desoldreing the old battery - definitely will give it a try next time!
Got the tools and the batteries today! Changed the batteries from the 3 GB and 1 GBC games. Tested them and the saves works! The bad news is: You'll have to repeat all over again and the good news is, I'll be playing on the Super Game Boy (SNES) and the Game Boy Player (GCN). Thanks for the videos.
Excellent tutorial. Thank you. (I had just watched one using the knife and tape and KNEW that wasn't the way.) Well done.
the one and only video on the topic!
Thanks a lot Kyle!
Just replaced the battery on my gold version the RIGHT way. Thanks for the step by step and repeating it a couple times on other games.
Really love how this video was made. Thanks for the help.
Thanks this one was the best ive found so far
A clean fix, thank you for your tutorial on replacing a batteries on Gameboy game. Kids thought they were broken👍
I've been able to fit 2025s in all carts, just need to trim the leads a bit. I'm guilty of popping the top tab off the old battery with a screwdriver before desoldering. Gives me more control and I don't need to use tweezers. At this point I always replace the battery unless it's obviously been done recently and correctly. Great video.
questionmark576 To each their own - I did one that way too when I was back in middle school. So I'm guilty of it too! Of course, that was over 15 years ago when I had no idea how to solder, lolz! Thanks for your comment and for watching! :)
@@KyleAwsm I still desolder the old and solder the new one in, I just pop the tab off first. The welds are usually fairly weak. It's a lot easier to pull it off the board when the other side isn't holding it down.
questionmark576 I should have phrased my initial reply comment differently. I know what you meant. :) If I came off as snarky, I wasn't trying to! I'm just exhausted, lolz.
Awesome video. Very detailed and even shows you soldering.
Thank you! Very helpful with great close-up video footage too. 👍
8:45 and that's why you use flux :P
also using a hotter iron and/or removing the old (probably lead free) solder should prevent the tip dragging through molasses and let you actually melt the stuff. both your pads/traces and battery will thank you for being roasted slightly hotter for a way shorter time than trying to melt it halfway for ages.
Game Boy games were never lead free. Nintendo didn’t go RoHS-compliant until the Wii.
The factory flux is spent or cleaned off and the solder is also oxidized. Addinf fresh solder/flux will renew the factory solder but then you may have a bit too much. Any contaminates will float to the surface and typically comes off with your soldering iron tip after reflowing with flux and a clean tip.
Probably the best tutorial for game boy games here in CZcams, although for soldering skills I suggest you look elsewhere.
Excellent video! Great resource for the first battery change. 👏👏
"The best way I've found to replace Gameboy Cart Batteries" would be a better title, as the soldering technique leaves a bit to be desired.
No flux, pads not cleaned/wicked, tinning the new battery unnecessarily, soldering temp too low, too much solder, holding the iron on the joint too long, etc etc. Not insulting you, just pointing out some areas to work on and improve for future efforts..
Also, if the battery is not entirely dead and there are some save games still on the game, solder/clip in a battery in parallel to keep the save games until the old battery is replaced, then remove temp battery. A battery in parallel is safe and should not damage anything, as the voltage remains the same.
I was thinking that same things while watching this lol
Why don’t you do a remash and upload a better video? I’m not being facetious that would actually be pretty helpful
@@eriks8382 There are good soldering videos already. Here's a quick but good one for through hole soldering: czcams.com/video/AqvHogekDI4/video.html
A couple tips:
Nintendo’s PCBs are typically pretty robust but rotating the battery off of the pad that’s not fully melted like we see here on Link’s Awakening can tear pads off weaker PCBs. It’s best practice to just hold in place and nudge it every now and then until it releases completely.
On that note, you almost seem to be painting heat into the solder joints on a few of these. While it may feel like this is heating more evenly and spreading it around, heat conducts through the solder and metal well enough that you’d be better served by just flattening the iron for contacting the maximum surface area and then adding solder to bridge to places that aren’t readily melting.
I use ceramic-tile drink coasters as a work surface since I don’t want to melt my ESD mat or heat it inside a plastic shell. Just a suggestion. :)
Yeah, when i replaced my Pokémon batteries, I waited until the solder gave up the battery willingly
Buddy you're a genius
I also hope you do the same, but with gba cartridges because some ones have the save battery like pokemon games and the first copies of metroid fusion and kirby
Thanks bro, just received the tools and batteries, fixed pokemon gold, very simple, thanks for the how to!
Great video brotha! I've just now gotten around to getting that game bit since my Pokemon Silver's battery is dead, and the battery is on the way!
Omg thank you! I recently found like 40 gameboy games from my childhood that were in storage. I'm 21 btw. and I found my favorite game pokemon red. But about eight 8hrs in and after saving, I took a 1 hour break then when I went to open my save, it said "the file data has been destroyed!" And I was freaking out lol. So I googled and saw your video. Thank goodness I thought my game was broken forever haha. Least I now how to fix it. Thank you so much :) you definitely earned a sub today :)
Kayla Myers Wow, awesome!!! I'm glad I could help you experience some childhood nostalgia! 😊 Thank you so much for subscribing!
Thanks a lot help out I got a copy off eBay that did not save just started soldering and this was a good test to see if I learned anything.
Thank you! Just did it my first time with your help
Great video! Very informative!
Wow man it is crazy how much better your video is than all the other ones. I watched two before this and thought "man those videos sucked... lets try ooooone mooooore..." I am glad I did.
Thanks man! Some people aren't happy with how much solder I use, and I also accidentally left a cart in a shell while soldering, but I am glad that this helped you! 😊 Cheers and blessings!
Thanks for the video, it was very educational.
Great video man but dude you need some lotion and cuticle cream! I have the same issue but those two things fixed the problem.
Just stop biting your nails like a toddler
I work in a workshop and my fingers look just a little better xD thats bcause i work with my hands.
Great tutorial! Thank you.
You’re a legend! Just the video I needed
Dude! Nice job! Thank you for teaching me the ways. I really appreciate it! Awesome!
Thank you! Make sure to check out the updated tutorial video too! 🙂👍🏻 Thanks for watching!
This channel deserves more attention
Thank you so much! I was able to replace batteries in Pokémon Blue and Gold.
KyleAwsm thank you so much for your tutorial. Now I can replace the battery on all my pokemon games.
Most hype music for a battery replacement video ever!
thank you very much for this tutorial, it is really very clear and I should be able to replace the batteries without too much difficulty thanks to this your guide. I wanted to ask you, can I possibly replace also the snes cartridge batteries using the same procedure? Thanks again!
I have watched this 10 times or more just to be sure xD, btw it worked
Thank you for this video. I was able go replace the battery in my Pokemon Silver game.
I've just recently discovered your channel and have been enjoying your tutorials. I especially appreciate how methodically and thoroughly you present them.
I have a recommendation for a future topic. Consider producing a soldering tutorial for an absolute beginner. This is one of those skills that many people are proficient at, but opinions on 'correct' procedure vary. The biggest benefit seems to be experience. I've never even held a soldering iron before and am too timid to even attempt a 'simple' battery repair without more tips. Anyway, thanks for producing such enjoyable content. Keep up the good work!
TopSpot123 Wow, thank you so much for such a kind compliment! I am glad that you enjoy watching my content so much! 🙂 And I'm actually one step ahead of you on that idea - I've been mulling it over for awhile and have been building different soldering scenarios and techniques in my head that I want to instruct people on, and I think I'm close to writing the outline for a script for such a video. All I can say is, stay tuned, because you will probably get exactly that kind of tutorial sooner rather than later! 😎 Thanks again for watching!
Thanks, this was very useful to replace my DK land 3 battery :D
Lol duuude i am terrible at soldering. But watching you i now realize I was doing it wrong. Thank you! In my Gold game I uaed a thin strip of duct tape to attach the contacts to the battery. Worked.
You are doing the lords work here.
Great video! Thanks man!
I did it the savage way, and it worked like a charm. I like your method too though
I have a soldering iron too lol >_
after doing this i didnt let the game cool down from the sotering and when i booted it up i got a black screen please wait a minute or 2 to let it cool off then start the game up for the save test :)
You really should invest in some solder braid, or a "solder sucker" aka desoldering gun. It makes it much easier.
Hi Kyle i would like to know what kind of soldering iron i have to buy. Thank you
Hello Kyle. This video is very helpful. Thank you. I do have a question. What temperature is the soldering iron for this application? Thank you
Wow great video!
This video was very informative. Thanks.
Thanks, Bunny! :)
@@KyleAwsm no problemo pal.
Well done sir!!
Great video! Question, can you use a multimeter to check how much juice you have left? Like does it keep working until it reaches zero like your phone battery does?
Thanks man, I apprciate you. Time to set some old pokemon games back into the wild.
Thank you for the tutorial, it worked great.
Useful too

To test the new battery, you could also try it in another Game Boy (/Color/Advance/SP), as the console will hold a residual charge for several minutes. Taking the game out helps to reduce and drain any local action in the new battery.
The very min I started watching this video I said this is going to be my video game guy .. thanks dude
On the insides of Pokémon silver what is the component in the top right corner covered with white tape as I need to replace a damaged one that was rotten
Hey Kyle, What soldering iron voltage would you recommend? I have an 40W, won't it damage the game?
Ana Ribeiro de Pina a good rule of thumb is to adjust your heat to where it’s just hot enough to melt the solder. you’ll know when it’s too low. there’s usually no reason to have it on full blast.
will any soldering iron and solder work? never really used one, do you have a cheaper recommendation for soldering iron and solder?
Just beautiful 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks man, just started replacing these batteries and it has worked on all but one ( Pokemon Yellow?? )
Try redoing your solder, try to get the tabs to make direct contact with the board and then solder it, not having solder stuck in between the board and the tab. It’s also possible that the battery you replaced it with was dead on arrival, try another
Any tips on soldering a GBA game? I haven't used a solder before and don't want to damage the game
As somebody new to soldering is this a safe project to try out? I have only soldered spliced wires together.
I have question wen you take off tape on the battery did see screeches on the mother board
if you have a game that works and has a save can you replace the battery without losing said save? also, I can only find the smaller cr1616 batteries with tabs on eBay available for me so I was wondering if those will suffice, and how long the difference in having to change them is to the bigger ones? I have 3 carts that won't save at all and one that will but I'm afraid ill loose my save either from that old battery dying or from changing it. hope for an answer
How do I remove those clips from the old battery? And do I solder them on the new battery?
i want to do this but how do i make sure i get a good quality battery that should last 10 years instead of old batteries or a cheap knock off brand? is there a energizer or lithium variant?
thanks this will help me in the future
I know this is an older vid, but any suggestion on how to fix one that has a broken connection for one of the tabs? Mines been damaged and seems like no amount of fiddling seems like it will get it working
do I need a 3.8mm gamebit or a 4.5mm gamebit for pokemon red/blue/yellow/gold/silver
I am having trouble with a pokemon red cartridge that i replaced the battery the right way but it stills won't hold the save, i believe maybe it is something else because it holds the save for a couple minutes and then suddenly erases it.
Hi sorry but i have a question, about replacing, if during dead battery removal game crashes due to bad contact with my game boy advance sp, do i lose the save or this happens only turning off console during replacement? Thanks
Really helpful thanks.
Hey! This was all very helpful. I still am having trouble getting my game working. I noticed that you used a paper clip and melted it with your soldier iron to get the battery to stick. Is that what i should use? Cuz I have been using flex and whenever in turn my game boy on, the game won’t work.
I am in dire need for help.
I bought a Crystal cartridge without a battery. One side of the contacts does have a piece of iron to solder a new batery on, while the other side has not. It looks like it got torn off while trying to remove the battery. There is still a tiny connection thingy for the power, however. If I want to try and solder a new battery on, do I need to solder the battery directly on that tiny contact, or do I need to add a solid layer of solder first? If not, do you guys know what the right move might be?
Does this also work for the a gameboy advanced cart
How many times you can replace batterys on a cardridge over and over etc again?
Interesting vid, instructional too.
So professional!
Thanks! A revised (and better) version of this video is on the way in a few weeks. 🙂
If there's a save on the cartridge and then replace the battery Will it get rid of the other save?
Hey man! I've been watching your videos and I'm hoping if you can do a video of how to set up a proper firmware for r4 sdhc 2019 for nds lite, i can't really find the right firmware for me it only shows the menu screen.
Great video but shouldn't you be cleaning up/removing the old solder off of the battery contacts on the pcb?
Wouldn't it give you a cleaner end product instead of big pools that might be even harder to work with next time the battery needs replacing?
Is their a no sawdering or not buying a new pokemon yellow version work around?
Gotta link to that backlight screen replacement?
If you break the battery brackets is it ruined? I broke mine out of ignorance doing a DIY. I tried to electrical tape them back on but still doesnt work with a new battery. I dont even get the battery message anymore but nothing saves
sorry if i sound dumb but why are the other methods on youtube bad? what makes them improper?
is there a certain temperature the solder needs to be?
does cross battery replacing work, meaning you could use the 1616 on a 2025 board or a 2025 on a 1616 board, or would that simply cause a lot of issues or overload the cart itself?
What happens if you put another battery on the pokemon cartridges other than cr1616?
Very nice walkthrough! How is your Gameboy color backlit?
1:30 that smiling fox in the intro made my day. 😁
dude this is such a great tut. i was cringing at the first i watched. why is this not more viewed!
Thank you! Check out my updated version of this video for even less cringe. 🙂 Link in the description. Thanks for watching!
Probably a dumb question, but is there any way to switch out the old storage medium from the cartridge to maybe a non-volatile flash chip, so you don't have to worry about a cart battery dying?
Getting a Accessory called Mega Memory Card will Backup the Save Data of any Gameboy game.
hey, good tutorial, i was wondering if there is a way to put like a holder for the battery instead?, mainly for ease of replacement in the future
That's a mod people do on SNES cartridges, but on these, I don't think the sockets have a low enough profile.
But either way, these batteries should last you a decade, and spending 10 minutes a decade to replace these isn't that big of a deal
I just ordered everything I need thanks for the video I can hear a loose battery in my cartilage.
Stew you might want to go to the hospital
This video will help me ton! After my kids got into pokemon (not sure how, maybe they saw it on Netflix), I told them how I used to play it when I was a little older than them (Red/Blue).
That led to nostalgia, buying a few GBA's with Ruby/Sapphire and not remembering how dark the GBA screen was, buying a DS2D with Sun for my daughter and a dsLite for my son so their eyes wouldn't get tired.
Anyway, here I am trying to replace the battery in my sons Ruby cartridge, as he can't save. Thanks for all the tips!
Pokemon Ruby doesn't need the battery for saves just for time based events
@@treeman73272 Well they're pretty important regardless. Besides, knock off cartridges will have the saving issue so it may be that he either bought cheaper easy to find aliexpress cartridges or got ripped off
@@Driv3r96 time based events aren't that important, unless you're actually trying to do something like get umbreon/Espeon or snowrunt which can only be found when the cave is low tide which is time based
@@treeman73272 Well yeah, but it may be important to someone trying to get the full experience. I wouldn't really enjoy playing it knowing my battery is dead, and besides berries stop growing too
I'm more concerned that their cart can't save despite being gba. Advance games didn't use the battery for save data which indicates the problem is bigger than a simple battery replacement. The flash memory itself could be damaged or run out of writes
