- Instead of getting a rental car, Jen, Gus and I picked up this 1962 Ford Econoline in Surprise, Arizona. Let's see what kind of work "Gail The Snail" needs to safely make a trip down to Tucson for the Duct Tape Drags.
@jennifersugint also did a video on this van and learning stick. Check it out here: • Can I Drive The Manual...
THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!

That brings back memories. Drove one for two years in the Army. Just me and my van driving around servicing nuclear weapons as a service technician. Two things were certain: you were not going to pick up women or get a speeding ticket. Good times.
See any UAPs. Near the silos
My dad got his 67 from MILITARY SALES at Eglin AFB. Early70s. Later it was my vehicle to learn manual trans. Drove to school.
Early 80s I drove it to Ft. Knox.
@@billywalters6060 ours was a plumbers van we swapped a 200 cid pertronix ignition new Holley 1bbl. 66 mustang. Buckets. And. Astro mags..zoooooom
That funnel bushing on the shift linkage was brilliant. That is rockstar shit right there. Well done Doctor.
I think he can cruise that pedal to the metal though. After all, it's only a 1 barrel carb and a mild cam, so an open throttle really is not that much. better mileage at 55 though, as Carter said, especially in a boxy van.
That tire guy is a real jerk. You buy a tire from the man and he wants to charge you $20 a piece to remove the lug nuts. His interpersonal skills need a lot of work. Treating a one time customer like that makes them a permanent one time customer.
Where can.i buy a.hat
This is “A Gem In The Rough” I am sure you will massage some life back into this vehicle Chris!
As a teenager, I worked in a grocery store delivering groceries in a Ford van similar to this one. It also had a "three on the tree". Used to pretend I was a race car driver, shifting from 1st to 2nd as fast as possible. It was a blast to drive that thing.
What can be better than Gus, Jen, and NNKH road trip on a Sunday night?
You guys are awesome. This is my favourite car show on the net. Jen is so damned cute and pretty, Gus is hilarious and you’re an absolute machine! Crazy talented and energetic- must be your puritan ancestry 💪
Been looking forward to this and ALL and ANY travel vids.. I think you and Jen do great travel vids.. Chris looking at any vehicles he can and Jen wanting to go in every thrift stores etc. And Gus just looking for every blade of grass he can sniff.. Makes for great videos !! Keep em coming you 3 !!
Like others, I really enjoyed the 1962 Econoline adventures and your plan to use it for hunting vehicles. Perfect. I felt for Jen during that tough highway merge. For safe travel speeds, my math shows: a 225/ 75 R 15 tire and 3.23 rear gear (no overdrive) should give you 60 MPH at 2300 RPM, where that may be max for the body shape and old 6 cylinder engine. Doing an engine refresh one episode would be epic. Add a trailer hitch for that jet ski! Keep the content mix coming, ALL good.
I really like the way you go through an old vehicle before a road trip, you cover all the bases. This is smart beause you are in the desert, a break down could be real trouble.. I didn't see you guys pick up jugs of water, but I know you have them. You always want to carry a bunh of water in the desert.
Thanks for taking us along on this adventure. Those van seamed to lose popularity after drivers found out that if they got into a head on collision they were the first one to the wreck.
My thought process is you only live once. I'd absolutely buy one if they were easier to find
And because the front wheels are directly below the seats, you feel every bump in the road right up your spine.
Really people had to find out common sense did not clue them in LOL Anyway that's why you go get in a head on with anything and everything will be alright. That van was a daily driver since new and it has made it with some bumps and dents but nothing too bad.
The person that drove this and dented the nose, was either impaired and or had no depth perception.
Hahaha! And your name is? Mr. Zone. First name Crumple! Built for a time when men were men!
Setting off for a 6-8 mile bike ride right now, and I usually listen to something on my ride, this gem pops up first video, what a day, looking forward to this
In the early 70s at the start of the van craze surplus Econoline vans from Bell Telephone were sold at auction in the LA area. They were green like that and had racks on top. They usually sold for around $600. There were a couple of used car lots that specialized in customizing them. Usually a cheap paint job, paneling and carpet. They would sell them for around $1500. I wanted one bad, but $600 was out of my budget.
GREAT VIDEO CHRIS AND JEN ,, JUS.. GREAT VAN AND WORKS.. THANKS..
Awe man , I had a’65 falcon van with the 24O and c6 trans.
It was a sin bin for my high school years. I was 17 when I went through the windshield doing just about 60. It was a few weeks after graduating from Quakertown sr high 😢 not far from where you are. It is miracle that I lived and now I’m 63 and see this video and I’m having some happy flashbacks!
It was often filled with smoke inside, usually tires melting from power breaking or reefer.
Lots of girls and getting chased out of Lake Nockamixon for parking after hours and watching the submarine races and listening to 8 tracks, Boston, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.
Thanks for the video and memories!
Hey Mr Chris. Wow what an old school Ford van. Old three on the tree, straight six. Enjoy your mechanical knowledge and boy does it come in handy on this old stuff.
Yes, Chris blows my mind with how fast he is and how much he knows
Awesome Chris that you’re filming another road-trip fixer-upper. I had a bad day, but your video ended it with smiles. Thanks so much for your positive vibes!
Leatherman is an excellent company. I sent a Wave in a couple years ago for repair. It’s was easily 20 years old because it was a pat. Pend. Model. I wanted it repaired but leatherman sent me out a brand new Wave with sheath. Most companies look for ways to get out of a warranty. They did me solid and made a lifetime customer.
It's really brilliant....not only because of the lovely dog....by the roadside repairs on old stuff is still Bering born with 95 Oktane Blood
Love these long distance big adventures. Very well done as usual. Just stinks gotta wait for the next episode.

An old bell tell service van
Ñylon bushing on shift. Lever
this would make a really fun driveway restoration project
Saw this van parked at Duct Tape Drags this weekend - awesome!
In the beginning, that gray warehouse you were across from .....is an Amazon fulfillment center I delivered concrete to when I lived in Arizona
You gotta keep this van and name it Gus. The universe says so. That van was born to have you, Jen, and Gus rolling through the desert on a road trip. ☀
Ya that was so cool to find that “Gus” name tag!
@@big_red_machine3547 Meant to be!
I can totally see a guy named gus drive this.
As usual, an excellent video to watch !
The comments are relevant, and the explanations clear,
not to mention the music, which really fits the bill!
A real treat!
Thanks Chris for all your hard work. 👍
(Gus is lovely🐕)
Best Ford van ever built!! Easy to work on!! Straight 6 200ci mine was a super van. 👈
When you pulled that match book out from the floor and it read Pearsonville Ca. Magpie on that was a shock because i lived in Pearsonville from 1980 to 1983 and i used to work in Mom and Pop's cafe part time and also held a job in Ridgecrest. talk about memories. when i look back i regret moving back to San Francisco.
Josh Slocum is the first guy to circumnavigate single handed. He used an old oyster boat and just went for it. This is in the late 1800s. Great book! "Sailing Alone Around the World"
_Spray_ - Just the work he put into the mainmast is enough to make an experienced rigger blush!

Love your videos! I’m bummed I missed you guys at the duct tape drags. My son loves Gus. Can’t wait to see how it goes.
Those old tires, are something Pep Boys used to sell back in the late 90s 2000s they were 99 dollars for four tires at on time. Very nice little van my grandpa had same van
I had a 64, 170ci 101 hp 3 on the tree in college. Shag carpet and paneling inside with bean bag in the back. Ran great cruised 65-75 mph from nor cal to Phoenix.
Love the dueling travel videos with Jen . The van might be my favorite so far. Love seeing Gus along for the ride
Loved it. You have the skills to make great content and the production and editing skills to make anything fun to watch, thanks Chris!
Glad you enjoy it! And appreciate the kind words!
Totally. Same with Jen’s channel. I watched hers on this van first and it’s so fun to watch her style
@@NoNonsenseKnowHowhello
I have the exact same timing light, that I bought in Sears back in the mid seventies, and yes, it still works.
This van is epic please keep it love all the dings in it and how well used everything is on it..wheels are cool..love the fridge and the carpet…it just oozes character…please keep it😁🦾🔥🔥🔥🌈
I just saw you and Jen on VGG in Gail go down the drag strip just after Lucky Costa. Freiberger obviously loved the "62 Econoline". Very cool to see you on the channels. I had to scroll back and mention it here. Love your stuff, thanks.
In 1962, none of those sizes are metric. . .I think I saw that on Marketplace, practically in my backyard. That probably would have looked better in my yard than the extra Prius or two I have.
Love the travel vids!! I had a '71 green Econoline that I drove coast to coast four times. straight six, 3 on the tree.
A friend of mine had a similar vintage Econoline, also green, back in the mid eighties he drove back and forth for several months from Sacramento to San Francisco to a job in a high rise in the city where a contractor had guys removing asbestos... Crazy what you'll do when you need a job.
I had forgot about that van until I read your comment. Now I'll have to ask my friend if he remembers the model year and there's no doubt he does...
Cool, about 1991 the steering gear practically rusted off the frame. Shed a tear when it was towed away. @@claztube
Cool old van! Those Ford 6 cylinders are bullet-proof. You gotta really fix her up!
I drove one of these in the Navy in Rota, Spain (1967) when I had the "Duty Driver" watch. VQ-2. I had not thought about that for years until this video.
Always enjoy the adventure/fix on the fly videos. Even better when Jen does her own perspective on her channel. Excited to see where this one goes.
Thanks, we appreciate you very much for checking them out!
This is my favorite year of the Ford Econoline, just beautiful, and worth quite a lot of money in good shape. I love watching you Jen and Gus on the travel, will it run adventures!
Luv the pup cup gus is so awesome & spoiled 😊
Dad had a 1963 Ford Econoline...'thought yours MIGHT be it, until you mentioned yours was 1962...
... His ran like a top, and was a "beater", too, but I loved that ol' thing...took several loads up to college with it, came home, parked it in the carport for Dad, hopped in my '70 'Cuda & drove back to the university. Loved that van...worked on it now & then, helping my Dad. Great memories. Thanks for this vid. Oh, and the rear doors only had heavy-duty nylon-weave short "belts" bolted onto the frame/body to keep the two rear doors from flying open. I saw you were "wondering"...
Certainly repairable adjust the clutch, a few new bushings in the linkage, a good tune up and your off to the snail races
Looks like an old Bell telephone van.
I took my telephone company driving license test in one of those little green vans. Same loose shifter and bad clutch. It was in downtown Newark NJ, June 1970. Went up McCarter Highway through Belleville to another Avondale. If you could drive that thing through daytime city traffic you passed.
Yep!, Those were all over the place when I was a kid!
Thanks for thinking of us, Chris. For a spur of the moment thing you did great. One of your better videos in my opinion.
Love this, everything looks so familiar and then you said Goodyear, I'm from Buffalo New York but my brother is been living in Goodyear the last 15 years lol.
Good 'Ay Chris, Roger from Australia here. Long time subscriber, first time commenting. I have watched every episode that you and Jen have downloaded, including your second channel. I just wanted you and Jen to know that you are my favourite CZcamsrs and I appreciate all the hard work that both of you put in to produce the truly professional content. Your narration and attention to detail does not go unnoticed. I send my kindest regards from Australia 🇦🇺
Roger
Love the work you guys do on the fly..Hope you have good tread on the souls of your shoes. Flintstones ride again...greetings from sth Australia 🇦🇺 👍 ♥
I was just watching Vice Grip Garage and i saw you twice with the Econoline at the Duct Tape Drags! Awesome!!!!
Thought for sure you where in a secret military installation! We so appreciate your awesome positve demeanor and how happy you are to be curating the old iron. Another killer video - love supporting your (and JENS) channels! Ed @ Danneberg Acres.
I think a bigger steering wheel would make that van a lot easier to drive. Hope there is a lot more content with Gail the Snail and Jen mastering the standard transmission! No thrift stores this trip yet? Really?? This van is super cool all in all
Chris, Jen, this took me right back to my childhood. I grew up in a row home in Philly. The backyard was big enough to park one car and squeeze around it. My dad had a van like that one parked back there for a few years. I don't ever remember it running. But I do remember all of my friends from the block playing in it for hours every day for an entire summer. We had 100s and 100s of miles of fun in that van without ever leaving the yard. 😊
_Snow cherries from France_
Yes, from the rear it looks very similar to my 1959 Ford panel truck. Thanks for sharing. Like reliving my youth😊.
It is entertaining to listen to you do a walk around on a hunk of junk like that with more enthusiasm than if you were selling a brand new Ferrari !
No metric nuts on that old van all 9/16 5/8 11/16 3/4 and so on.
14mm, 16mm, 18mm, 19mm. . Roughly
Love the Gus van!! Please keep it and fixer up!!
Def a west coast truck, that would have returned to the earth in Md. by now-good find!
For shifting try clearing it into 2nd gear before putting it into first.
This is a technique I had not remembered until I read your comment, but it did work back in my day with a three on the tree and I drove a '64 Falcon a '64 Studebaker Wagonaire and a mid 1970's D100 with that set up... who taught me thisI can't say today at 66 years old and 40 to 50 years hense my days of column shifting.
p.s. rgs4x: although with the slop in the linkage that this clutch has, it's a wonder it shifts at all. It is justa'bou'ta go AWOL
I had one I bought from my boss in 1975, he had refurbished it from old Army surplus. Then I drove it from Anchorage Alaska December 13. to Uniondale LI , that was 3300 miles, then on to Spencerport New York and Then on to Littlerock Arkansas. I was in the Air Force, I was 20 years old. Great memories !
I love those deserts.
Such great road trips.
You know stuff 🙄,Jens the glamour then Gus is soooo cute luv it 💪💪💪💪💪
You found a real gem in the desert. Love it. Some of those old seals were made of leather.
That van certainly is a diamond in the rough. The little bit that you've already done is a great improvement. Looking forward to see the outcome. Keep up the good work and the cool videos 👍✌️🇺🇲
These vans were originally called "Falcon Vans", they are the reason that the thrift 6 went from 145 cubic inches to 170. The 145 just didn't cut it in the van instead of the first generation Falcon. The trashed interior and the mounts on the top look like indications of a work truck past. In the US the thrift 6 got all the way up to 200 cubic inches. In Australia there was a 250 version and a cross flow head. They are tough little engines but they do not tolerate pour maintenance. The original versions had rocker are shafts which has the oil passage for the valve train inside it. With infrequent oil changes the o8l passage plugs up starving the rocker arms and valve guides of oil. Later engines had upside down acorn nut valve pivots like a Chevy. The thrift 6 was built up into the 80s.
Hi Chris from Hertfordshire England, great old school mechanics, something we appreciate in the UK by people of age. Your videos always have plenty of great content with out ye Haa cowboy nonsense , keep up the good work,
Love the Econolines, had 3 of them.
Man you run across some really sweet Vehicles this one is definitely a keeper
You should buy more cars and post More of how you fix them and sell some of them. You been gone to long. Love your fixing. Keep it ON Br.
Proper adventure which you really feel part of.
she wears her battlescars with pride
I love this van, it is so sketchy, but also so simple! It looks like huge fun!
Awesome rig. Maybe let this one be Jen’s project and do an upgrade restoration on it and see what she can make of it. Definitely keep the patina but bang out some dents also. Can’t wait for the second episode 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I owned one back in the late 80's it was a 1967 & i loved it but living in the rust belt it was shot It ran great but the floor was mostly held together by scraps of wood & screws ! I should note this the first your videos i seen & i subbed too !
This is so cool! My dad had a copper metallic-coloured 60's Dodge window van with a v8 in the 80's, which didn't have a back seat when he first bought it, so he installed one from another van just for us kids - good memories 😁
It said on the rear quarter in cursive styling "Room to Move" 😁
He is a pretty good mechanic.
Man, literally just two days ago I gave away a 3 speed column shift transmission that had electric overdrive. It was behind a 223 in-line just like that one. I would rather have given it to you. These are one of my all time favorite vehicles.
That sure was a fast hour. Thanks for taking us along.
Thanks so much for watching the whole thing! Really helps out a ton!
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow No problem, really enjoyed it like always.
That van is so cool. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one around here on the road.
Jen, Chris, Gus…Another Great trip. Thanks for sharing. That is the sloppiest shifter I have ever seen. If Jen can drive that, she can drive anything! My Dad had a 63 and a 65 Econoline. I learned to drive in the 63 van. When learning, you must learn to look forward and not down at the road. In these vans, you can “Really” look down at the Road! Either my brother or I had to sit on the motor. That was the Hot Seat!
Goodyear Az! That’s my old stomping grounds. I was stationed right up the road at Luke AFB from 87 to 95. Loved it.
That takes me back to the day when I was 16 and driving delivery for my father he had three early 60s Econoline just like that. The linkage would get stuck between gears and I would end up having to go underneath to free it up. Used to be my weekend camping rig and go to fishing rig.lots of found memories.
Look up the SR-71 and its encounter with USSR long range fighter jets back in the day when a Swedish Air Force Pilot saved the Black Bird pilots from a life in a gulag , great story , really amazing!
Thank you for such a great video I'm so excited to see you guys once again, notification on. Oh ya I remember riding in the middle the cover was so warm, now I know why lol.
Call it the “Chris”-tery Machine. Gus can be Scooby-Doo.
That spare Sears tire could make a good wall hanger with some tire shine!
Somehow i feel the need to yell: SCOOBIEDOOBEDOOOOO when i see this van :P
ROOOBIE ROOOOOOOO!
That can of sealer was way to cool
Suweet! when you at Harbor Freight grab some of those snap together rubber floor pads perfect for the Guster on the engine cover!
Grinding in 1st & Rev is normal if u r not stopped completely non sincro 3sp just sliding straight cut gears 2nd & 3rd are sincro luv the van got 64 Rancharo with same kind of work to be done excellent cheers guys 😊
One of the best You tube channels on CZcams… love it.
Back in the late 1980s, our neighbor gave us a 1967 Ford Falcon van that was the spitting image of your van. Since we have a farm, we have plenty 😉 of space and fields for "testing" cars, trucks, vans, and anything else with an engine. That van could do awesome 🔥 burnouts, cheerios, and man, it could do jumps way 😀 better 😉 than the General Lee!! Then the motor got 😫 tired and the rear main leaked 🙄 like a sieve to the point where dumping a gallon of waste oil 🛢 into the motor 😒 every time we used it was a real 😳 deal! Scrapped it but managed to sell the front and rear axles. Regretted it ever since. I could go on all day with the stories. Good luck to you, Jen, and Gus my friend!! Drive safe and enjoy 😉 the new toy!😊
Theetravisb turned me on to your cannel and glad he did. I had an Econoline just like that. It was a retired telephone truck, It was even carpeted and paneled. Easy to work on and the six cyl. were bullet proof. Brought memories back. Even jump started it to carry the wife to hospital and birthed #1 son. good stuff, thanks.
Chris…to pull the front grease seal remove the outer bearing and then with the drum still on thread the spindle nut back on a few threads then pull the drum off. The spindle nut will catch the inner bearing and the bearing will pull the seal…nothing gets damaged I promise. Also when packing the bearing scrape the grease off of your palm from the narrow end of the bearing not the wide end. It creates higher hydraulic pressure and also keeps you from packing that ring of crud from the back of the bearing back into the rollers. Love your channel!
Gaskasinch, you can still get it and I've used it from the 70s on. Perfect for holding gaskets in place and also for belt dressing. The can has remained the same for at least 70yrs. Good stuff and it's old school but still works perfect today. Thanks for another great video. I enjoy watching your trips 😃
Gus is adorable!!
Excellente video😊! Glad you're enjoying the Mexican food and Gus got a Pup Cup. I love vans and the Soutwest--except the sun. Snaps to Jen for holding out for the better shift. I knew you could do it Bravo! Looking forward to conclusion.
Chris, i always look forward to your videos. you are a good leader. competent and decisive. but also patient and compassionate with Jen and Gus. good man.
I made the mistake of using Mobil 1 GL5 in my Frontier transmission, which calls for GL4. It corroded the brass synchros. That 3spd probably doesn't have synchromesh on 1st and reverse, so after idling in N, going to 2nd before 1st or R to stop the spinning gears is good practice. I don't know if GL5 will hurt it or not. Good job adjusting the linkage!
