Why we cannot follow the Gospel of Jesus AND the Law of Moses at the same time

  • Our Hebrew roots friends profess a faith in Jesus but also want to keep the Old Testament Law. Does it make sense to try to hold onto both the Gospel and the law? Does it make sense to follow Jesus and Moses, to pursue both Grace and works of the law? The short answer is no. That makes no sense at all. It dilutes our devotion to Jesus and makes us double-minded in our pursuit of God. In this video, we'll look at 4-½ reasons why trying to follow the Gospel of Jesus and the Law of Moses at the same is both is unbiblical and dangerous.

Our "Torah-observant" friends often put all their "eggs" in the basket of Matt. 5:17-20. And the problem is that the Bible consists of more than just those four verses. So, if we interpret Matt. 5:17-20 as teaching that the entire Law of Moses will be in effect until Heaven and Earth pass away, we then need to explain the 5 biblical examples in this video, which unequivocally show that the Mosaic commands regarding sin atonement, the priesthood, the temple, etc. have all changed in material ways.

Concerning the destruction of the temple 2000 years ago, he stated that why would God allow the destruction of the temple if the Mosaic law is still in effect? Will that was not the first time that the temple was destroyed. Solomon's Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians and Nebuchadnezzar and the temple was not rebuilt for over 70 years after that. And the Mosaic law was not done away with during that time.

    • @TheBiblicalRoots

What's interesting is that when that first temple was destroyed and Israel was sent into exile, God specifically told them their exile would last 70 years (Jer 25:9-13) and what they should do while in exile (Jer. 29). But that was not the case with the destruction of the second temple.

@@OneSparrow-76 I think JeffSmith is talking about the “works of the law” as the yoke of slavery (Galatians 3:10). The works of the law are not the Law of Moses, but the law of men. But actually Gentiles who became Christians were instructed as to what portion of the Law they needed to keep along with the moral law, which is universal (Acts 15).
For historical purposes, we need to remember that at the beginning of the first century there was no Christian religion, but a branch of Judaism called “The Way” or Netzarim, which was made up of Jews and Gentiles (only later in Acts 11:26 they're called christians for the first time). Because of some Pharisee believers who wanted the Gentiles to keep the entire Torah, the apostles called the council of Jerusalem in Acts 15.
Returning to the present day, Jews from the Messianic Judaism keep their culture and the Torah, except for the laws of sacrifice (because Jesus has already completed in perfect form) and others that are fullfilled by the authorities.
The Body of Christ will be made up of Jewish believers and Gentile believers in harmony, loving one another as oneself. This is the Church.
May God bless you my friend!

Thanks for posting this and addressing this topic. We recently celebrated Sukkot with a group considered Torah observant. We learned a lot concerning the OT forsure but I did have to remind someone about Galations because of some comments concerning circumcision and participating in passover. After experiencing a conviction, we decided as a family stop doing pagan holidays and birthdays last year. As you stated we have freedom as Christians to observe God's feasts (as they all point to Christ) or to rest on a Sabbath but to operate like your in bondage to the law...gets dangerous it completely dismisses what our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ did for us.

Thank you again for your teachings Brother Solberg. (I still need to catch your Part 2 interview w/M.Brown, I think his name is.)
Anyway, I've posted some of my short time experience w/the HRM folks a few times. I won't post the name of the man they were folllowing; although he does have a channel.
Or at least did the time I came upon him & to chat w/others you had to link in w/your email addy/phone# & give a real or made up moniker. It really bothered them, if when you logged on, you didn't sign in publicly or if you signed on as a "guest".
Anyway, when I came upon the channel, yes, as you've mentioned ... at 1st I was curious, etc. Oh I couldn't believe that I was celebrating Christmas, a "pagan" holiday to the HRM. I threw out all my Christmas decor & told my family that I no longer observed that particular day (the 25th).
One of the things that REALLY irked the "inner circle" of the group was that I was using Jesus' name instead of "Yeshua" or one of several names they used. I felt as I was pressured into changing my moniker from Jesus to Yeshua.
Also, at least 2 of them said Paul's letters gave them headaches, as well as calling "Christians" names or having a hatred of them.
Oh I could go on & on, but I'll just mention a couple other things.
They were really diligent about keeping the Sabbath or Shabat? (Friday nite to Saturday nite) & the Feasts, etc. So I stopped working on Sunday.
Although, where I live, there are no HRM temples or people that I could locate; so all of my "interaction" w/them was done online. And I believe a few other members only commun-
icated in this way, concerning their faith.
Concerning questions. Yes, if anyone came on to chat & asked SIMPLE questions, unless you almost immediately agreed w/the HRM teachings, you'ld be bombarded w/negative comments.

I found one article about the poem. It didn't quote the whole poem but It was an anti-Isaiah article, so no bias in my favour there.
Yes, Isaiah does condemn the literal drunkenness of the priests & prophets, and I can believe that Isaiah may have subtly referenced this poem in order to rub the message in - maybe.
But if you think that's all there is to it, I don't think it's me that needs to read the whole passage (chapter 28).
Firstly, whats the problem with the drunkeness?
It results in these people being unable to correctly discern the truth - see v7.
Secondly, it's far more serious than just literal drunkenness.
They are also deliberate purveyors of lies & falsehood - see v15.
Thirdly, Isaiah referring to them as drunks is also condemning of their unclean spiritual state, they are not only physical drunkards they are drunkards spiritually.
This is what v8 means when it says; "For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean."
(The Bible also uses filthy clothes to indicate spiritual uncleanness.)
If you think v13 is only about literal drunkenness and nothing else, how do you explain v9&10?
V9 makes the point, that in order to learn knowledge & understand doctrine you have to be a spiritual adult, not a spiritual baby.
And v10 explains how you get this knowledge & understanding of doctrine.
It says; "FOR", in order to learn knowledge & doctrine, "... precept MUST be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:"
It's not possible to make v10 about drunkenness, it's clearly about how God/the Bible teaches knowledge & doctrine.
      As v9 has already said, its about;
"Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine?"
Also if v13 is drunkenness then v10 would logically also have to be drunkenness - and that makes zero sense.
      Why?
Because that would mean, that in order to learn knowledge & understand doctrine (v9), God is recommending drunkenness as the best way to go (v10).
V13 follows on from v9&10 and states what happens if you don't follow the instructions already given in v9&10.
V13 is presented as the opposite of v10 and restates the instruction of v10.
V13 is clearly saying, if you don't follow the instructions of v10 you will: " ... fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken."
In other words you won't learn knowledge & you won't understand doctrine.
If you think simplistically, this is just about drunkenness and nothing else, you have not been weaned from the milk, or drawn from the breasts.
No, not Adventist, it's much worse. Will elaborate if you so desire.

AND- I am finding that asking the Hebrew roots believer certain questions, tells you even more about them. They are making claims that they are “keeping Torah“. So I’ve begun asking them questions directly from the Torah that they claim to keep. They downplay Christians who go to church on Sunday, and claim that they are “keeping Shabbat” while gathering Each Saturday. When I ask them about all the work that they do on Saturday in setting up tables and chairs, cooking lunch, cleaning pots and pans after lunch, sweeping in mopping floors after Shabbat and I mentioned that I believe that is classified as “work“, they don’t answer it. In other words while they say that they are keeping Shabbat, according to Torah, I really don’t believe that they are. And while claiming to eat “biblically clean“, they eat in restaurants that cook pork and shrimp on the same grill that their chicken was cooked on. And they purchase deli meat, such as beef and chicken, but it is cut with the same meat cutter/slicer that the ham is cut on. These are legitimate questions. When I read the Torah, it looks pretty strict about contamination. The big question is this. If you are really claiming to keep Torah, ARE YOU REALLY???

It wasn't enough just to kill Jesus, there had to be a legal framework which made His expiation legally binding for all time. The problem the Torahists have is they are focusing on non-salvific portions of law (food & days), patting themselves on the back for it & missing the entire point of Jesus' death. They say their law-keeping activities aren't for salvation, but the ENTIRE POINT of the Mosaic covenant was FOR SALVATION. It's like missing the forest for the trees.

Please keep reading in Galatians 5! You stopped at the end of verse 2, but in verse 4 Paul clarifies exactly what he was admonishing them about, namely: "You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be JUSTIFIED by law(-keeping); you have fallen from grace" by trying to use the Law as a vehicle for salvation. He gives the same warning in much of his writing, including Romans. You have fallen into the error of Dispensationalism. It's not about Law vs. Grace, it's about Law AND/WITH Grace. Jesus said that we must live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God; "every" means every. Thank you, brother. This is good for us to 'debate' in love.

Hi, Debby! Yes, the "laws" of God that define right and wrong were true long before the Law of Moses was given. So when God commands us not to murder today, it’s not because of the Ten Commandments. It’s because of His universal principle against murder. Long before God gave Israel the Law of Moses, Cain was judged for murdering his brother Abel (Gen 4:8-16). Same thing with sexual morality. Under the New Covenant, God doesn’t forbid adultery because of the Ten Commandments. Unfaithfulness and sexual immorality were wrong long before the Law of Moses, as we see, for example, in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 18-19). Because mankind was made in God’s image, we have a “compass” of objective morality, so to speak, baked into our human DNA. And under the New Covenant, God's law is written on our hearts.
The food laws are not a matter of morality in and of themselves. They are a matter of ceremonial or ritual purity. It is, of course, immoral to disobey God about anything He commands us to do. But eating animals, for example, that were not ritually slaughtered is not a matter of morality on its own. God was just fine with sojourners and foreigners eating those things (Deut 14:21). They were only forbidden for the Israelites.
The Bible teaches that the Law of Moses was given at a specific time to specific people for a specific purpose. Much of what was given at Mount Sinai included God's universal "laws" about right and wrong and loving God, which were in effect long before the Law was given. But the purpose of the Law of Moses was not to set a new moral standard. It was to turn a ragtag group of recent slaves into the nation of Israel and set them apart for God. And embedded in those Mosaic laws of ceremony, ritual, distinction, and civil order were shadows that pointed to Christ. And it's _those_ laws that have been fulfilled by Christ and are no longer binding under the New Covenant.
I teach and believe that obedience is God’s “love language.” Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). And I'm sure you would agree that not every command that God has given applies to every person at all times. Some of His commands only apply to certain people (i.e., men, women, parents, Levitical priests) or for certain times (i.e., building an ark, gathering manna, while in exile). And I'm sure you would also agree that we are each only expected to keep the commands of God that apply to us. The NT teaches that the ceremonial Mosaic commands do not apply to Christians today. (ex. Repeated blood sacrifices for sin are no longer required (Heb 10:18).) We still serve God and obey His commands, “But now we are released from the law, having died with Christ to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code” (Rom 7:6).
      Blessings, Rob

In find it interesting, that when someone/some group wants to ignore or create a new 'tradition' they always use the terms 'old testament' or 'old covenant'. But, when they want to provide verses to prove (whether valid or not) that they don't have to or need to do these things anymore - then most of the time they say "because Scripture says... ".
Well, it didn't take but a couple of minutes for Mr. Solberg to do the 'old junkie testament opposed t the new shiny Scripture' move.
Roman's 2:13 I guess would create a great debate about which laws we are to keep. Roman's 2:27 to me seems to shade it more to the keeping of All of God's law - yes except for those that pertain to sacrifices and temple rituals since there is no temple. Plus, doesn't it say in Isaiah or Revelation that when the new heaven and earth are established that all will come to God's holy mountain to offer sacrifices again?
How are we to handle Paul's instruction to Timothy that All Scripture is good for reproof and correction?

I agree with a lot of what you say regarding folks in Hebrew roots who think their righteousness is in their works but you then go way overboard and entirely miss what Jesus instructed us to do. The spiritual mechanics in how He saves us is through the very laws you say don’t apply. Jesus said in Matthew 5: 17-20 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
First off the Pharisees judged by the law but they did not do the law them self. Jesus made this hypocrisy an open spectacle. Jesus said the law nor prophets will go away and that he came to fulfill them. When we read those parts of the law concerning ritual cleansing and indeed of sacrifices, it is amazing to see different aspects of what Jesus came to fulfill in our lives by his blood and through his Spirit! For example, there are sacrifices for atonement and sacrifices for peace offerings with Yah. The only way we could ever keep the law, indeed, is only available by being cleansed by his blood & faith that he will change our hearts by the work of his Spirit. I know what you’re saying to yourself right now, whoever said we had to be perfect? Well, Jesus did at the end of the same chapter Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
And we know when we are given a command we are empowered by him to do it! John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Wrought is a metalwork term which means to be beaten out, like his decorative metal is beaten into art. John gives us more detail in 1 John 1:5-10 5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Don’t get hung up on verse 10, keep it in context of the chapter. A lot of people think that we aren’t able to overcome sin. That’s not what this chapter is saying continue reading the whole book of first John and you’ll see, particularly with the very next few verses in chapter 2. In fact, John gives us an image of what being transformed by Christ and his Spirit looks like in 1 John 3:1-10 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
Jesus’ apostle John says that sin is transgression of the law and that if we sin we have not known him (or his power). Because to know him is to experience him working in your life. To remain in him you are unable to sin because he is unable to sin. Following the law becomes his work in you and you walk in his righteousness. Hebrew roots walks by their own righteousness but when I follow God’s moral law it’s his work in me that allows me to do it. His righteousness not mine.
This brings us to which parts of the law remain. Acts 15 does a good job, but we shouldn’t think that we’re free from walking in the parts of God’s law that deal with morality. Jesus said all of the law hang on the first wall which is to love God with all your heart mind spirit body soul and I love your neighbor as yourself. When you do the first it causes you to want to live a moral life to be in sync with our Father. When we start to do that he fills us with his love so over and abundant that we love our brother where we never could before on our own. In Galatians and Peter we were told what people who won’t go to heaven look like, eg idolaters, murderers, slanderers, back-biters, etc. For each one of those things there are corresponding Mosaic laws. But when we walk in his Spirit he changes us and allows us to keep his law in perfection!

‘Then it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to observe all these commandments before the LORD our God, as He has commanded us"(Deut. 6:25). It isn't smart to contend that Moses was wrong when he said that, especially when God had him say those words.

@@theeternalsbeliever1779 Moses wasn’t wrong! Yahshua didn’t come to destroy law or the prophets but to fulfill them AND they won’t be fulfilled until the end of earth. Can Jews perform ritual washing or sacrifices today? No, God took that away from them and Yahshua is why. Deuteronomy 4:2! Now I hear a lot of Hebrew roots people talk about doing the Torah, and that by doing so they are considered righteous by their working of the law, but they have to pick and choose which Torah laws they follow. Genesis 9:3. If you following the Torah laws concerning not eating certain foods, you ignore Genesis 9:3. This is worse when you judge someone who is not keeping kosher! If you look how Yahshua fulfills large portions of Torah law by Acts 15, for example, 1 John 3:1-10 makes more sense. Because you aren’t saved living in your sin unchecked! He came to destroy the works of the devil and because his Ruach can’t sin you shouldn’t be able to by default if he remains in you always and you in him. Sin is transgression of the law! So I agree that it’s important to study it, which is what Jesus taught in Matthew 5 closing by him commanding us to be perfect as our Father in heaven is (through him)!

Hi, Alex! The Torah has not been done away with. It is a part of Holy Scripture. Every Christian Bible begins with the Torah, and it is, therefore, “breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (1 Tim 3:16-17). More than that, the Law of Moses plays an important role in the life of a Christian. It witnesses against our sin (Rom. 7:7), points us to Jesus (Gal. 3:23-25), teaches us about God and the history of His people, offers wisdom and insight, deepens our understanding of the person and work of Christ, and challenges us to love God (Deut. 6:4-5) and love our neighbor (Lev. 19:18).
That said, *the Law of Moses is not binding on followers of Jesus as a body of legal requirements of obedience.* This is the consistent witness of the biblical authors across the NT (Acts 15:1-29; Rom. 7:6, 14:1-23; Gal. 3:24-25; Col. 2:16-17, etc.). This doesn't mean that Christians are without a law and can do whatever we want, of course! Jesus and NT authors give us many commands. Christians are absolutely called to live lives of love, service, purity, obedience, and moral virtue (Gal 5:13).
      Blessings, Rob

If you say, "the law of Moses is not binding on followers of Jesus as a body of legal requirements of obedience." Why did Jesus, Paul, and all other apostles still keep the law (as seen right across the NT, Acts 15:20-29, 21:20-24, 24:14)?
You also said that you can reconcile the OT and NT? But Jesus, Paul, and all the apostles did exactly that. They kept the sabbath, feasts, SACRIFICED, and the ate clean (not kosher).

I can only speculate that it allowed Timothy, who's mother was Jewish, to go into places where only Jews were allowed in order to minister with Paul.

Hi, Rick. Yes, I agree that Paul circumcised Timothy for the sake of the church’s mission, in order not to unnecessarily offend the Jews since Timothy would be entering into Jewish synagogues and homes. It's the same approach Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23. "I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings."

Point 4.5 Circumcision: Paul writes in Gal 5:1-4,6a” Galatians 5:1-6 “It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. 2…if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3…to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. 4 You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace….6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything,…”
A professor should tell you when you read Paul, most of the time you are only getting half the story, so let’s look at the other half. Does Paul contradict himself when he says it doesn't matter if you're circumcised or not in v.6? In v.1 is Paul saying the Law and circumcision is a yoke of slavery? He writes here: Romans 2:25 - 3:2a “For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 So if the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27 And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law? 28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. 29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God. Rom 3:1 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? 2 Great in every respect…”
Rob makes the statement that circumcision is an insult to the work of Christ on the cross. I would revisit Rom 3:1-2a above on that assertion.
The elephant in the room; Timothy's circumcision. So just after the “starter pack” parts of the law formulated in Jerusalem we read this: Acts 16:3-4 “Paul wanted this man (Timothy) to go with him; and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts, …his father was a Greek. 4 Now while they were passing through the cities, they were delivering the decrees which had been decided upon by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem, for them to observe.”
According to Christian theology, Timothy was now severed from Christ, and put in bondage and slavery to the Law, and this was done by the Apostle who wrote most books of the NT. You might say well Timothy’s mom was a Jew. Well many Messianics Jews believe they are not bound to the Law either. Is there evidence Paul did not teach against circumcision? Well yes there is according to the Jerusalem, church.
Acts 21:20a-24,26 “You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all zealous for the Law; 21 and they have been told about you, that you are teaching all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children nor to walk according to the customs. 22 What, then, is to be done? They will certainly hear that you have come. 23 Therefore do this that we tell you. We have four men who are under a vow; 24 take them and purify yourself along with them, and pay their expenses so that they may shave their heads; and all will know that there is nothing to the things which they have been told about you, but that you yourself also walk orderly, keeping the Law….26 Then Paul took the men,…went into the temple giving notice of the completion of the days of purification, until the sacrifice was offered for each one of them.” So Paul kept the Law just as the apostles in Jerusalem did who suggested he take this vow and even offered sacrifices and this was after the work of Christ on the cross! Was the Father and Christ insulted by this? I will conclude with these passages from Paul.
1 Tim 1:6-9 “For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, 7 wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions. 8 But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane,…”

My brother ( aHebrew Roots believer) visited me today. We talked about different subjects, but mainly scriptures. He said that the pastors tell church members because they are saved by grace, they can live as they like. I tried to explain that it's not what is meant because even Apostle Paul hinted at- grace is not a license to sin. He went on and on about eating pork, following Laws, Statues, and Commandments of God. I told him that there's no way I can follow these laws perfectly, but he said that I should follow them to the best of my ability. This is not the first time I'm discussing this with him and his family, but they seem to be blind to truth. From now on when we talk and they tell me the same things, I just listen and don't comment on it. I have to agree to disagree because it seems like there's no point. They left Christianity for Hebrew Roots. I continue to pray that the God opens their eyes to see the true gospel.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Miranda. I know how frustrating that can be! One thing I have learned over the last five years of engaging with folks who hold these beliefs is that there is not any one verse or argument that will snap them out of it. This doesn't mean we shouldn't respond, but it does mean we need to adjust our expectations. There is no passage that you or I could cite that would cause your brother to suddenly realize the error of his ways and admit his mistake. That’s because, at the end of the day, this is not really a theological problem. Christians who adopt a Torah-observant lifestyle (and are divisive about it) seem to do so as an issue of identity or a misguided psychological/emotional commitment of some sort. And I very much believe there is a spiritual aspect to it, as well. With some people, you can almost see a spirit of legalism overtake them.
So when we are conversing with HRM, what I have learned to look for isn't an “aha” moment where they suddenly see the light but rather an abrupt change of topic. That is the telltale sign that we have presented them with a piece of information that they don't know what to do with either because (a.) they had never heard of it and/or considered it before, or (b.) they know it's a weak spot in their HRM theology. We have "jammed up their machine," so to speak. And because they aren't seeking the truth of Scripture with an open mind, but rather arguing to bolster a preconceived position, they will rarely stop to consider the new information we offer. Instead, they switch topics. It is also exceedingly rare for them to acknowledge any positions of nuance. Their thinking is very black and white, as you may have already noticed!
The good news is that presenting a strong biblical case to our friends and family does eventually add up over time, especially if it's shared in love and bathed in prayer. So my advice is to love him, pray for him, but hold your ground biblically. Don't let him guilt you about not eating kosher, not keeping the Saturday Sabbath, and so on. Our salvation and our righteousness are complete in Jesus! There is nothing we can do to add a thing to the righteousness that is ours through faith in Him!

In the section about the physical Temple and that it is not relevant any more, this verse was shown. Rev 21:22 “I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.” So Rob pretty much shut the door on those that might believe otherwise. But….from the same prophet he makes this statement earlier in the same book: Rev 3:12-13 “He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write on him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name. 13 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’” So depending on your personal theology, you can decide what this means. Just remember that God is seeking those that worship him in Spirit, and in truth.

I would like to hear your opinion - what exactly is the "Law of Moses" - i.e what laws are included and what are not, and most importantly what is the reason for that statement. I have personally found that there are some important verses that need to be correlated between Gal 3 and Ex 24. There were laws given that were part of the covenant, the people heard these accepted them , then the book of the covenant was sealed, blood was sprinkled and the covenant confirming meal was eaten, that basically seals that agreement. AFTER this, God calls Moses up on the mountain again and gives him the tablets and "the Law" and the commandments to "TEACH THEM". This cannot be part of the covenant, since it cannot be added to as Paul explains in Gal 3. This is the school master part that we are no longer under - and it agrees well with the points you raised here in this vid. However the feasts, Sabbath, 10 commandments have nothing to do with re-conciliation, those are instructions in righteousness, if you chuck these out as part of Moses law, or of ceremonial stuff, you are basically sinning.

Thank you; this was a timely video for me. I know someone getting deep into Torahism. One counter point I would make about point #3. You rhetorically ask, "why would God destroy His temple for 2,000 years and leave us with no way to fulfill his temple commands?" Couldn't the same argument be given during the Babylonian exile? The temple was destroyed, and the Jews were in Babylon with no way to fulfill his temple commands. My Torahist friend believes a 3rd temple will be rebuilt "any day now" in Israel. From his perspective, this is just another period like the exile period between temples. How would you address this argument?
You other points are spot on. Also, minor coincidence: I taught 6th graders in sunday school about 6 hours ago and went over the gospel in Galatians. I hit the same point you made about putting one's hopes in legalism (while still avoiding antinomianism).

    • @TheBiblicalRoots

Great point about the temple! And there is one significant difference: when the first temple was destroyed and Israel was sent into exile, God told them that it would last for 70 years (Jer. 25:1-14), and what they should do while they were in exile (Jer. 29). The same is not true of the destruction of the second temple. The only biblical prophecies about that temple came from Jesus who said it would be utterly destroyed.
As far as the idea that the third temple will be rebuilt "any day now," it's certainly possible some form of physical temple will be rebuilt at some point in the future. Scholars are divided on whether Ezekiel's prophecy refers to a literal physical temple, or metaphorically to the presence of God dwelling among his people. Either way, when all is said and done, the Bible explicitly tells us that in the New Heaven and New Earth to come, the New Jerusalem will have no temple. "And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb" (Rev. 21:22).

God is one. This is the greatest doctrine of the entire Bible. “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD” (Deut 6:4). When the Lord Jesus Christ was asked about the greatest commandment, the Bible records, “And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord” (Mark 12:29). It is clear from the response of the scribe that the Jews understood “one” to mean one single person -“he”. “And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he” (Mark 12:32). What the above means is that there is no room whatsoever for a so-called doctrine of the “Holy Trinity”. What is the doctrine of the Trinity? In its most basic form, it states that “(1) God is three persons (2) Each person is fully God (3) There is one God” (Grudem, 1994, p. 231)

Remember what the scribe replied when the Lord quoted Deuteronomy 6:4? He said, “…there is one God and none other but he” (Mark 12:32). If the personal pronoun “he” has any meaning, it ought to mean one, indivisible individual. The Bible clearly establishes that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all one and the same person. Seven hundred years before the Lord was born in Bethlehem, Isaiah prophesied, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). The child or son is called “The everlasting Father”, according to Isaiah. The Bible always provides several confirmations of vital doctrines. When the Apostles suspected the Lord was claiming to be identical with the Father himself, Philip requested to see the Father because he did not think the Lord Jesus was the Father. The Lord’s response to Philip disproves the teaching of the doctrine of the Trinity...

An endless religious focus on what we must do or not do creates a risk of distracting us from the one great thing that God calls us to do; "And this is His commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us" - 1 John 3:23. In the end when all is said and done, it is the redemptive work of Christ Jesus that is central to Scripture just as Revelation 5 tells us:
"And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne.
Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying:
'You are worthy to take the scroll,
    And to open its seals;
    For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
    And have made us kings and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth.'
Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice:
'Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive power and riches and wisdom,
And strength and honor and glory and blessing!'
And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:
'Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to Him who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and ever!'
Then the four living creatures said, 'Amen!' And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever." - Revelation 5:6-14
The law had one purpose...to be a harsh schoolmaster driving us to our knees to the feet of Jesus in repentance. Those who do not fully trust in the redemptive work of Christ tend to fall under the false belief that their works give evidence of their salvation as if God did not know who were His and who were not. They will focus more on what they have done and less on what Jesus has done and drag others into the legalistic hell they created. Thinking of all the works they did, they will be like those who Jesus spoke of when He said; "On that day many will say to me ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’" - Matthew 7:21-23

Properly understood the keeping of the Torah is not bondage it is liberty.
A great deal of the NT can't be understood with out the knowledge of the Torah.
The feast days are prophetic in nature. The spring feasts, Pass over for example forshadowed the events from the crucifixion through pentecost.
The fall feast forshadow the second coming.
    Understanding this completely changed eschatology.
You are completely right, we do not need to sacrifice animals for the attonment of our sins any long. Does that mean it is now lawful to murder? Of course not.
The fulfillment of one component of the Torah does not negate the remaining majority of its body!
I also understand that a great deal of variety exists in the Torah movement. These differences are no greater than the theological difference within main line Christian denominations.

One of the odd things about keeping the Torah is that Leviticus 16 outlines how the priests are to perform the rituals for the day of atonement. It also says it should be done forever.
Although the "forever" part could be questioned since Jesus took this away and it isn't going to be done forever, making it seem as though God changed his mind, Torah defenders often claim that the reason they stopped the sacrifices was because the temple wasn't there after 70 AD.
The problem with this is that in Ezra, they didn't have a temple and performed the ceremonies. But even more intriguing to me is that the ark of the covenant was not in the second temple. This causes a problem because the ark of the covenant was necessary for the performance of the sprinkling of the blood and the incense.
So, for hundreds of years before Jesus even was born, the day of atonement was not performed correctly. And nobody talks about this.
But it doesn't matter. Someone will have a justification for it. There is always a justification for, and an argument against, most things.

Interesting points. Also notice that these sacrifices were done _prior_ to the first temple as well (in the tabernacle). According to Ezekiel the sacrifices will be performed in the millennial age. Clearly those in the first resurrection (those in new sinless bodies) will not be sinning. Those in mortal bodies who enter that age will be sinning and apparently will be making these sacrifices. These sin sacrifices never took away sin and never will take away sin _so they do not contradict_ the actual/real sin sacrifice, Jesus. They pointed to Jesus and will point back to Jesus. They _may_ also still serve to purify during that time. We'll see. We should believe God when He says 'forever'. In the eternal age there will be no sin to sacrifice for...so no death. There is a lot we don't yet fully understand but like Abraham we still must believe God when He tells us something. When He says 'forever' He means 'forever'.
Speaking of Day of Atonement, while it will still be observed it will become a joyful occasion.

So, if all of the Law if Moses was discarded by Jesus, the Word (i.e., Torah, Prophets, Writings, Gospels, Epistles, and Revelation made flesh), then why did Jesus command people He healed to go and do what Moses commanded at the Temple?; why did Paul circumcize Timothy right after the Council at Jerusalem where they decided that new converts should be taught 4 basic commandments from the Torah?; why did Jesus never say one word against the Sabbath but instead reminded people that it's lawful to do good on the Sabbath? Let's say someone suddenly invents a teleportation device costing consumers only $1. Overnight all traffic laws would, indeed, be rendered meaningless ... but that wouldn't necessitate the abolishment of all laws governing other areas of life. Similarly, Jesus' self sacrifice on the cross did render all laws pertaining to the priesthood and animal sacrifice at the Temple obsolete, but that doesn't mean that all laws were so rendered. Indeed, in Hebrews 4 we read about the ongoing necessity of Sabbath-observance, not for salvation but, yes, for both our good and for obedience's sake (i.e., obeying God's behavioral do's and don'ts from a heart of love and humility is always valid, which is why, when Jesus explained who will enter and who will not enter His kingdom, He gave nothing more and nothing less than lists of behaviors, something that the Parable of the Talents also implies). Indeed, the last few chapters of Acts are all about Paul standing up against "false" accusations that, in teaching about Christ, he was simultaneously preaching against the Law. Paul's own behavior showed that he upheld the Law, even 14 years after his conversion and longer. In Matthew 5:17-23 Jesus upholds the Law, emphasizing how none of it shall pass away until after heaven and Earth pass away. I believe He was overstating His point in order to make it clear, just like when He told followers that, in order to follow Him, they would have to eat His flesh and drink His blood. Jesus knew full well that His death and Resurrection would render unnecessary part of the Torah commandments, but ... still, He wanted to make sure that no one would interpret future events as an indication that all of the Law had been done away with. Indeed, a better word selection for the Greek "pleroo" in Matthew 5:17, traditionally translated with the English word "fulfill," is "fully preach," "fully reveal," or "fully make known" ... translations that align much better with the context of the immediate verses, whereas "fulfill" does not fit. Consider: The Torah was the Word that Paul commanded the Bereans to test his teachings against. Lastly, I know that arguments from silence generally are not strong ones, however, it's simply true that in all of the places in the New Testament where one would expect to read words from Paul, Jesus, and others denouncing the Law and teaching a replacement doctrine, we simply do not find them. Again, Paul ended up in Rome ultimately to spread the Gospel, yes, but it all started with him having to stand before various rulers in defending his reputation as a Torah-observant Christian. A good video to watch is 119 Ministries' "Which Law, Paul?" on CZcams or www.testeverything.net.

I believe for unbelievers the mosaic law is still condemning them but when we come to faith in Christ we die to the law and to sin. We die and are raised with Christ so that’s why the law isn’t abolished we just die to it. To walk in newness of life and The Holy Spirit makes changes within our hearts and teaches us the morality behind the laws and works within us. God bless

And that’s also why Christ does not “fail” the Deuteronomy 13 test as some say.

There is a clear distinction in Scripture between "God's laws" in general, and the specific law that he gave to the nation of Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. And His Word tells us that the Law of Moses was never intended to last forever (Gal. 23-25).

@@TheBiblicalRoots the correct way to say this is if your a priest follow the laws that apply to priest and if your a man follow laws that apply to man and woman follow laws that apply to woman. But when it comes to doing something Gods way to be cleansed of sin that applies to everyone because everyone sins. And when he says it's a lasting ordinance its forever like the rainbow and his word. Dont tell me or anyone you dont have to follow the commands of God. Especially if it's to make atonement to God.

Yes we can... The gospel is the real keeping of the torah.. in a renewed way. Walking in torah is what Jesus told us all the way... Its not complicated. The evangelical gospel is a romanic gospel. The new testament never told us to abolish torah, but to keep it in the right way.
Remember the torah were the books that Jesus and all the apostoles used, and the all the disciples for about 300 years.
All the time the new testament is talking about the scriptures its talking about the Torah...they didn't have new testament, neither they thought they would have one.

Regarding animal sacrifice. I agree that aninal sacrifice never took away sin. It was a reflection of what was happening in the heavenly realm on our behalf. That being said your argument then does not hold up. If you claim there is no point to continue to partake in sacrifice after the crucifixion then there was also no point in doing so beforehand.. so which is it?

Hi Sheldon. Of course there was a point in partaking in sacrifices before Jesus. That was what God _commanded_ for sin atonement. But now, "there is no longer any offering for sin" (Heb. 10:18).

    Solberg,
Tell Us, do We "FOLLOW" YAHUWAH Our ELOHIM, or MUST We "FOLLOW" YAHSHUA Hamashiach?
I SEE that since YAHSHUA had ASCENDED into HEAVEN, People are to FOLLOW/OBEY Him, and "NOT" ELOHIM Anymore.
Did YAHSHUA "REMOVE" ELOHIM out of the EQUATION?
Is YAHUWAH Our ELOHIM "NOT RELLAVANT" Anymore?
    Please PROVIDE Scriptures.
