We harvested two dozen sour oranges on a hiking trail on Merritt Island in Florida last week. I juiced them yesterday to make sour orange biscuits and kept ten seeds. I just watched your video, peeled the seeds, and have them wrapped and resting as I type! I am excited to start sour orange trees that will be descendants of the original sour oranges introduced to Florida by the Spaniards in the 1500s!!!

That was a great trick to get the seeds germinating quicker. I grew citrus from seed some years ago, but I made a mistake in discarding the plants as the fruits were sour beyond belief. With the advent of CZcams, I have heard others say that it takes a few years for the fruit trees to produce fruit that is of the correct sweetness. I now have lime and Yuzu trees, the lime is really happy, has lots of new growth and flowers/ fruit. I think I will have to look at heating the greenhouse in the winter, as where I live (top Rhondda) it can be brutal. I have always wanted to grow citrus - and try some other exotics - so I loved your video. I will be trying more citrus etc. from seed, so will use your technique. I am starting off everything in the winter, mainly as I need plants to be robust in time for our short summer here. Thanks, Vox.

After I bought a Meyer Lemon Tree this summer from a local garden center I noticed your video on CZcams when looking for citrus information.
After watching your growing oranges from seed video I have tried it myself following your instructions and after about a month the seed germinated and I now have a Midknight Valencia orange seedling 🌱 with two shoot and small leaves which are about 3cm tall.
Thank you very much for producing this video as it has inspired me to try it myself.

Lots of hybrid varieties won't have seed or the seeds they do have, won't germinate. Also, because of how fruits in your local supermarket get stored, you don't always have the ripest fruits available. If you have an orange that will produce seeds (valencia, mandarian, blood orange, etc.) let it sit past the point you'd normally eat it. This will give your orange the time it needs to grow the seeds inside. After all, the nutrient rich fruit is what rots and nourishes the seeds and gives them a good spot to take root. Planting immature seeds or trying to germinate them, won't work.
But be aware that most oranges you find in a store, are hybrid varieties themselves. You might get eventually get a fruit that is like the original, or you might get one that is closer to one of the parent varieties. If it ever produces fruit at all. Some won't no matter how perfect you tend them.
There is also a chance you'll get a wild orange! If your tree starts sprouting thorns, that's what you have. The oranges might have a more gnarled skin even though they'll look nice. They are sour and bitter like you wouldn't believe. They're pretty but not good for much else, other than attracting bees.

@Howdy Justice -when you were talking about his left hand you wanted to know if he was left-handed I'm such a dummy I gave you the information to figure out what his dominant hand was. Sorry if I made you feel stupid by answering your question. I want you to feel very smart now I recognize you know how to tell whether someone is left or right handed you must have been concerned about the length of his fingernails are as a result of not cutting them. I'm sure I don't need to explain to you why they're not as short as people who cut their nails. You could also assume that people have long nails on both their hands use both their hands as tools. Long fingernails are probably most common in the artist community. So you didn't want to know why his fingernails were long? you didn't want to know if he was left-handed? Do you know what you wanted to know when you left the? At the end of the sentence? I didn't really see anything on his left hand he's wearing a ring on his right hand I hope this helps.

Hey, I recently planted my sed around 2 months ago. I had overwatwered it, and the seedling started to dry out. I suspected it was due to root rotting and so I changed pot with more dry sand. Anty ideas on how to save the seedling? BTW the seeds are green, but they are dry, the stem is also shrivelled up. Edit: I live in the middle east, and now its the colder season, very cold during nights, so I have them indoors.

I found this to be a very helpful video. I live in the Sierra Foothills in California and our winters can be very long and cold on occasion. When I start heat-loving seedlings, I keep them under lights with a standard heating pad underneath on low. It seems to keep all the tender fruit and vegetable seeds thriving. I have modified 2 10-gallon aquariums to hold my seedlings and they sit right on top of the heating pads. I will be starting lots of stone fruits this winter, but after watching your video, may get going on the oranges now, in late summer.

I followed your advice and it worked like a charm! How often should I water the soil once the root is planted in the pot?

I just popped the seed with the husk intact into the soil and I got a nice little seedling in about 40 days

One thing that will help you out a lot is a Korean Natural Farming technique called FPJ. Make some from Comfrey or other plants that are rich in the nutrients needed, and you have a powerful foliar spray for your plants and trees.

Another good way to grow citrus trees, especially ones that need a warm environment, is to buy a £20 electric propagator. And also because they're heavy feeders, it's always good to grind some multivitamins into a find powder and feed it to them. Using both of those methods in conjunction with each other ensure a strong, healthy and viable citrus tree ;)

Do you mean human multi vitamins?? Would I still need fertilizer then? Thank you!
