    I like that you're getting the essence of the books by getting a waft now. Much classier. You're like the book sommelier. :)

      Hehe! Thank you! Unfortunately I did revert to the more barbaric method as the video progressed. But that technique actually works quite well. I'll try to perfect it for future hauls. My throat was tickling the next day and I was worried I'd picked up another lethal spore, but seems ok now :D

    Cover on Underkill instantly reminded me of Star Wing, Star Fox? For the SNES!
    Glad you're enjoying The Blade Itself. Funny you mention the map, I thought so too as a kid! I can remember emailing Joe asking about one, at the time this was still his only published book, he made the effort to email me back and explain how difficult it would be to come up with an accurate map after the book was written. Since he had never given a map much thought he feared if he tried to create one to fit the descriptions in the book some of the geographical locations wouldn't make any sense when you consider time and distance. Looks like he eventually caved to pressure though since newly published books all contain maps.
    Timed the ending of those bells perfectly!

    • @newsfromthegelding
      @newsfromthegelding  Před měsícem

      Yeah, I know exactly what you mean!
      Wow, that's cool that he replied! So cool! I've never reached out to any of my favourite authors assuming I'd never hear from them again. I've never understood people who write fan letters, especially back in the day when famous folk recieved sacks of the stuff, never to be read. I think that's a really good thing, that he wrote the story without a physical map in mind, shows that the story itself was far more important to him. I did the same thing when I wrote my first fantasy novel, I ended up making a map eventually, but it became tricky after I'd started writing with only general ideas of geography.
      Ha! Yeah, those bellringers are really on point at the moment. I'll try and do a livestream one day from the belfry if they let me :D Oh, and hope you've got that camera going now? Looking forward to seeing what you've got in your collection.

    Glad you're liking The Blade Itself. I read it and the next 3 books in the series earlier this year. Whilst I didn't think too much of the story (which would normally be a huge detriment) I loved the characters, especially Glokta, and the dialogue was fantastic.
    The best books I've read in recent years are: House of Suns, Carrion Comfort, Boy's Life and Swan Song. All big books, I'm afraid. So, those would be my recommendations to you.
    Also, I watch to the end. Cheerio.

    • @newsfromthegelding
      @newsfromthegelding  Před měsícem +1

      Yeah, I'm really enjoying it thank you! Ah, there's three more of the buggers?! I'd better get on and order them, really looking forward to seeing where this all goes. I know what you mean, considering the size of this first book, not a great deal really happens. Seems more like an introduction to the world and primarily it's characters. I agree, really wonderful characters and dialogue. My favourite is Glokta, too. Cheers for those other suggestions, I'll jot them down and seek a few out. If you have an absolute favourite amongst those, please do let me know and I'll start there. Oh, and thanks so much for being one of the dedicated completionists! Very much appreciated!!

      @@newsfromthegelding There's actually 11 books in the First Law series, haha. But the first three are a trilogy. Then three standalones, another trilogy and a couple of short story collections. Well worth the trek, in my opinion, so far.
      As for my favourite of my recommendations. I think I'd say Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons. It's got a bit of everything in there, horror, science fiction, historical fiction (WWII). It's a beauty. Plus, if you like it, it'll open your eyes to a fantastic new author.
      p.s. You're my favourite booktuber out there. Very funny and not afraid to read older and obscure books (which are my jam) that are not trending and being talked about by a hundred other booktubers.
      Keep up the great work. Thank you.

    • @newsfromthegelding

      @@StElna Eleven books?! *gulp Hahaha! Well, I'll start by vanquishing the trilogy and see how much stamina I have left for the rest. I'm already looking forward to the 2nd installment.
      Ah yes, I've heard of Dan Simmons and the Hyperion series (which I have never read, but seems to be a lot on YT review-wise). I'll certainly purchase a copy of Carrion Comfort, thank you. I've read a little about it online and it sounds very interesting indeed.
      My goodness, that was a very nice thing for you to say. Thanks so much! In the early days of this channel, almost 5 years ago now I think, I hoped to use it as a means of publicising my writing. I really didn't have a clue what I was doing. When the penny dropped and I realised I was dreaming if I thought people would be interested in videos about books no one had ever read, I decided to just make videos about whatever I was interested in; so painting and reading. I'm glad you like my rather more obscure picks. I don't like to be swayed by whats trending and just like to read what looks interesting (usually based on the cover art, to my detriment!). Cheers mate!

    I hope you will enjoy Freaky Deaky.
    It's kind of an Tarantino movie.
    (Leonard is actually one of Tarantino's favorite writers)

      Ah, hello there! Thank you for the recommendation. I'm really looking forward to reading this now, especially if Tarantino is a fan. Much appreciated! I'll likely review it in the not too distant future.

    I've read Robert Harris' "An Officer and a Spy" (about the very famous Alfred Dreyfus affair). It's pretty good. I already knew a fair bit about the Dreyfus affair, so it was pretty amazing reading this book and watch the story unfold. I also have "Fatherland", but it's yet to be read. I'll probably get to Imperium, Lustum, and Dictator too, at some point.
    As far as Heinlein goes, I read a good few. I much prefer the early and shorter works. The bigger the book, the more unreadable Heinlein tends to get. I DNF'ed "The Number Of The Beast" three times.

    • @newsfromthegelding
      @newsfromthegelding  Před dnem

      Crikey, you really gave that book a chance though, all three of them! Saying that, I'm going to give Zelazny's Lord of Light another go after reading This Immortal. I've never previously DNF'ed a book and tried again, so I'm quite excited by the prospect.
      I'll probably wait to get Lustum and Dictator before giving Imperium a read, but I'm looking forward to it; very different to what I usually read. I haven't heard of An Officer and a Spy, though. In fact, I'm completely ignorant of the Dreyfus affair, to boot! I'm going to read up on it now, cheers! :D

    The Soma cover definitely would have worked well in your pay-nus vid. That Candy Man cover is trippy. Hope you don't get Book Lung again. You're in my prayers, bro.

      @newsfromthegelding  Před měsícem

      Hehehe! So far so good on the Book Lung front, although my throat was tingling rather unpleasantly that evening. Yeah, I agree on Soma, the more you look the more of these kinds of covers appear, especially from the 70's and 80's.

    Gelding can take in the atmosphere of a book dipped in the sewage of 12 alien species, and appreciate it. Finds a worm casting, and is horrified!

      @newsfromthegelding  Před měsícem

      heheheheh! That made me laugh! You are quite right of course. I guess I use a fair amount of denial when sniffing otherwise harmless looking books, but a physical reminder of the devilish environment these books might have resided within prior to reaching me is too much to take! I try not to think too much about those people who like to read sitting on the toilet, too :D

  • @TheRetroEngine

    How many times you say 'Candyman'' !!!! BE CAREFUL. Did you buy Freaky Deaky from World Of Books. I had that when buying Chocky from there, I wanted a specific cover which I remember owning, but they sent a different version!
    I played this normal speed to start with. Then watched it at double speed cos I wanted to see it as if Alvin and the Chipmunks did a fantasy and scifi devil ridden, beer sipping, book wafting odour review vid. Thanks Alvin, some great books there. High speed church bells too perfectly timed.
    That dude with the sword looks like he had an accident.
    I like the idea of notches in the pages as to the length of sessions of each read. That Joe A book is a heck of a tome, like books should be. Small print, packed in, 800 pages, proper immersive books. I'm joking, it's just that's how I remember books from the 80s.

    • @newsfromthegelding
      @newsfromthegelding  Před měsícem

      Hello Rich! Ah yes, I forgot to mention the reference to the Candy Man film. I think I got away with it. That's all I need having a hook wielding bastard when I have the satanic candle always playing tricks on me. Yeah, I think it probably was WOB, I use them quite often because of their various deals. I've been quite lucky with them in the past, getting the covers so advertised. But not this time unfortunately.
      Hahahaha! I'll have to try that at some point. The next thing to try would be playing it backwards, there's probably some satanic chanting going on in the background. Ah, yeah, those bellringers have really got onboard with the channel, I owe them a pint or two!
      Indeed, a fine wedge of a book and no mistake! I'll have finished it by tomorrow in under two weeks, which is something of a miracle considering my reading speed. Managed to nail quite a bit when I was bedridden, the only benefit of my recent incapacity! I've already photographed myself as a barbarian for the thumbnail, not a pretty sight! hahahaha!

  • @ChrystusBrzeczyszczykiewicz

    I don't even know how CZcams allowed this thumbnail, really sexy stuff, borderline erotic.
    Good to see you're doing better mate. Btw that chap in your copy of "This immortal" does look like Austin Powers. I'll try to get into that book soon enough.
    And I do watch to the end.

      Cheers Cristian! haha! I used some powerful magic to get that thumbnail up, potent stuff. I'm glad you picked up on the erotic angle, I'll try to push the envelope on future thumbnails :D Oh, and cheers for the long-watch! I need to make some medals for my most dedicated viewers!
