Having ADHD makes you realize when you're old enough that you will never be like everyone else and can't interact normally like everyone else and no matter how hard you try theres nothing you can do about it and sometimes you just feel so alone.😞
Edit: wow I never had this many likes before! Also I would like to update that I'm doing much better, I'm making more friends and being more confident in myself!

Having ADHD is the farthest away from being an advantage. Yes, it might make u more creative and maybe you can hyperfocus on important things. But what you'll be able to comprehend is how frustrating it is to be constantly be distracted even when ur engaged in a conversation and you CARE about what the other person is saying. Still you don't pay attention and say "what?" Like 10 times during the conversation. It's frustrating when you constantly misplace things and forget to do everything and even forget your thoughts 0.5 sec after having them and move on to the next thought. You can't remember names of people you just met no matter how many times they tell you. You can't study you can't be productive you won't get good grades and keep panicking when deadlines approach. This is just my experience thats why I'm being so blunt.
It's a struggle. It's not an advantage. Oh i so wish it was.

I agree to having all those things as well. But I don't hate my ADHD. The only thing that stands out to me from everyone else (that is ADHD free) is that I'm different than them. I see things in a different way than they will ever do. My mind is mapped differently. Also that my imagination is quite spectacular and beyond. I can _see_ sounds. I can have conversations with myself in mind. I can play any song in my mind, switch between channels, sometimes they overlap, but it's okay. I don't know what being normal is, but it must be boring. I feel unique.

With regard to relationships and even my marriage I struggle due to it in pretty much every aspect except my due diligence with investments and making money. If I were to put a finger on it I'd say I spent so much of my life upset and knew I'd be depressed forever unless I found the solution, and when I found it I hyperfocysed and never stopped. "You're just making an excuse, laziness is a choice."
Do you really think that if someone could choose between success or repeated failure, they'd choose failure every time? Do you think people choose higher rates of depression, abusive/broken relationships, self harm, suicide, disordered eating, and addiction just because they can't be bothered to 'put in some effort'? Do you think we're choosing a 1/2 chance of being excluded and lonely during most of our childhoods? Do you think we're choosing a more difficult and stigmatised life just because it's convenient?
    Please, learn some perspective.

It’s not so bad, one thing I’ve noticed is pairing ADHD with physical stimulation is like a life hack. Now if you can find a physical high paying job with ADHD you can get very far In life, you just need to learn how to use ADHD to your advantage instead of looking at it like a curse.

  • @AeroRain
    @AeroRain Před 3 lety +60

It’s very exhausting. I can process things quickly but I start jumping from one thing to another. One minute I’d be searching about how to replace a computer’s power supply, and then suddenly I’d have like 10 tabs about who invented the battery and how they function, etc. School is the complete opposite of how I learn things, which explains why I struggled so much. Also it’s as if I’m two different people. I’m honestly a rather shy and calm person but then another side of me wants to be outgoing and relentless. I have a deep desire to control myself but I never can. The fact others can do it so effortlessly makes me very depressed. This eventually lead to anxiety issues. It’s ruined so many aspects of my life I can’t even put it into words anymore 😞

Just seen this on Ned Hallowell's page
Listed below are criteria for adult ADHD that we developed from our clinical experience:
A sense of underachievement, of not meeting one’s goals (regardless of how much one has actually accomplished).
      Difficulty getting organized.
Chronic procrastination or trouble getting started.
Many projects going simultaneously; trouble with follow through.
A tendency to say what comes to mind without necessarily considering the timing or appropriateness of the remark.
A frequent search for high stimulation.
      An intolerance of boredom.
Easy distractibility; trouble focusing attention, tendency to tune out or drift away in the middle of a page or conversation, often coupled with an inability to focus at times.
      Often creative, intuitive, highly intelligent
Trouble in going through established channels and following “proper” procedure.
      Impatient; low tolerance of frustration.
Impulsive, either verbally or in action, as an impulsive spending of money.
Changing plans, enacting new schemes or career plans and the like; hot-tempered.
A tendency to worry needlessly, endlessly; a tendency to scan the horizon looking for something to worry about, alternating with attention to or disregard for actual dangers.
      A sense of insecurity.
Mood swings, mood liability, especially when disengaged from a person or a project.
      Physical or cognitive restlessness.
      A tendency toward addictive behavior.
      Chronic problems with self-esteem.
      Inaccurate self-observation.
Family history of ADHD or manic depressive illness or depression or substance abuse or other disorders of impulse control or mood.
Do you see what is happening? That is 99% of the population.
It's called being normal. It's called being human. It's called not being a robot. It's me. It's you. It's our neighbors. It's people we work with. It's our family. It's Ned Hallowell.

I never saw it as an advantage. I’ve taken medication since I was in third grade, all with varying degrees of success and failure. School was horrible for me, and to a degree it still is now that I’m in my second semester at college. Despite being on a medication that works for 12 hours, I still get distracted sometimes and struggle with talking to people. It’s not that I can’t concentrate when I talk to them, it’s because the amount of constant anxiety and classmates either distancing themselves from or not even realizing I’m there because I’m that quiet. And the sad thing is I never really realized or cared about how lonely I was until I graduated high school. It hurts when no one wants to talk to you, but it’s another thing when you’re completely self aware and want to get to know others, but can’t at the same time because deep down you’re afraid that they’ll leave like everyone else did in the past

I have ADHD, also I take IB classes and deal with a lot of stress. Living with ADHD is extremely hard, not to mention if you have other medical problems. I usually have such a hard time studying and sometimes I feel completely unmotivated; well lets be honest, constantly unmotivated. People expect you to function and work to a higher standard when they don't know what it is like to have a brain like yours. Despite these challenges however I am top of my class in IB courses and I actually like learning certain subjects like science and math. Even though I am not perfect, I am extremely happy that I have even been given the privilege to take IB courses, I even went to a private school before this that was so hard that I couldn't keep up with anyone, and I left when I couldn't afford it.
However, there is one thing I noticed about people with ADHD, and that one thing is that people with ADHD cannot simply thrive in the environment they are put in even if they work as hard as they possibly can. We have to discover what works best for us, sure we are not as motivated, smart or attentive as others but we are unique. We will only be able to express how unique we are when we learn to accept ourselves, and then and only then will we thrive and surpass everyone else, because they can never be as energetic, innovative, carefree, open-minded and special as we are.
P.S I don't think I'd want a neurotypical brain like everyone else anyway, because then I would only be influenced by what society tells me and that would make us as ordinary, boring and bland as everyone else.

The worst part of ADHD (for me) is reading and reading comprehension. I find it a lot harder to focus on reading, and that made it really hard for me earlier before I had better analysis skills (and I still often struggle greatly with analysis in reading). I’ll often think of something else and end up rereading what I just read. This didn’t hit me too hard until I started studying for the ACT and the SAT when I realized that I would need to really work on improving reading speed overall. Most of the time, I am able to understand a passage, but often it just doesn’t click.

I like the positive outlook of adhd in this, I really do. Sadly though, the reality for a lot of us is so much different. Sure, if I’m the right career we can excel; but getting to that point sometimes feels near impossible. Anyone who has adhd knows this struggle, the complexities of performing simple tasks, or getting trivial things done, while an ant hill to most, often becomes a mountain for us. It’s becoming a trend to view adhd as this quirky little disorder but in all actuality its something I wouldn’t wish on anyone. The stress, the anxiety, the mishaps deemed failures by societal standards puts a toll on everyone that suffers with it. Again, I love this idealism of an unfortunate situation, but the truth of it is that life will most likely never be easy for most of us, even if we are on medication. I apologize for the melancholy but it’s a simple truth you eventually come to terms with.

For example, he never stops talking about his obsession - money. He budgets endlessly, drives me insane with his continuous adding up and checking how much money we have and need. As a result we have never missed a bill payment, never run out of cash for food, and always have enough aside to get things we enjoy. He's utterly amazing, but I still wouldn't call ADHD an advantage. He struggles with anxiety and depression, and his impulsivity has caused problems with drinking, gambling and inappropriate behaviours that luckily our friends know about and support him with.

    I ended up in a mental hospital for 13 weeks because of the effects of 13 years of undiagnosed ADHD. I failed huge chunks of school and cannot do basic things a lot of the time. It can only possibly be an advantage if you are the following;
    a) diagnosed early in life and have very few symptoms due to being able to treat it basically from day one (which is often especially difficult for AFABs (Assigned Female at Birth individuals)),
    b) are in an inclusive, accepting, caring and healthy social environment with family, friends and in school (mentors included)
and c) your educational environment is willing to adapt like 30-65 % of everything to your needs without requesting loads of additional costs.
And those factors in combination with one another are so damn rare it's like hitting a jackpot at birth.

Well, it might have been useful for the hyperactive types way back in the day, but for this inattentive type in the 2000s it has mainly been a constant source of frustration and feeling powerless and weak. First off, I was only diagnosed at 20, because nobody took me seriously when I first asked if I could get tested for it when I was around 10, which was prompted by reading Percy Jackson and relating a lot to what he experienced. Of course, everyone thinks that if you're not hyper then you don't have it, or that I got randomly restless only because I was young. Also: "You love to read, ADHD people hate it", was a main argument against even bringing it up with my doctor, which sucks since it was essentially a way to not have to sit through hours of human interaction without an extra source of entertainment, and now that I don't read nearly as often (because bringing a book everywhere is impractical and "rude"), I've lost most of my ability to read at a normal pace and enjoy it, meaning I spend at least 5 minutes per page, sometimes more, because I keep losing focus and having to re-read sentences and paragraphs until it finally "sticks". So naturally I avoid taking on books because I know how insanely time consuming and frustrating it'll be. Yay. Also, hyperactivity is theorized to be a compensation for the "always tired" alternative that you get with ADD, and boy do I feel that. I need so much sleep to function properly, and even then by like 6pm I'm just done, goodbye productivity or will to do anything. You know that tired and overwhelmed feeling after prolonged interactions and having to put on your society mask that leads introverts to hide in their homes for a while and not want anything to do with other people? Yeah, I get like that pretty much all the time, with everything, unless I have someone or an obligation to snap me out of it, but if I have too many consecutive days of good productivity, the second I get a break I just spiral back into useless mode and get stuck like that for days. I'm aware of the strategies to regain balance, but it's really hard to make an effort when I feel too tired to make any efforts.

People who think ADHD is fake: either go educate yourself or shut up.
A person with it is not a person that is just more active and goofier!
I am so angry right now. ADHD in its worst form is a disorder that causes huge irritability, extreme forgetfulness, the pain of not being able to focus on anything and accidents that come from not being able to pay attention like others do.
ADHD is hell and NO it never will be an advantage. Yeah, maybe you're more creative, maybe you are charming, but the negatives outweigh the positives and it is not something you want.
People who only act as if they have the disorder to get the medication are the reason nobody takes it serious anymore.
ADHD is not fake. If you think it's fake, go read a book. There are so many scientific explanations on why ADHD is a real issue.

Like i had it since ever and i’m ok with it. I mean i have deep moments of hyperfocus on things i like(sometimes i get so focused on a drawing or design that i won’t even notice my sister being in my room or hear ppl who call me) and i sure got tons of energy like when we hike i’m like the only one in my group of friends who doesn’t complain about being tired. Also forgetfullness. like that can be a good thing bcuz i don’t stay mad at someone for too long. Like i can barely sit still to finish my homework but i sure af can focus 3h straight on drawing. My friends also say(don’t have many but they’re got friends) that they always loved my sense of randomness and that they can be their wildest and weirdest self with me

one of the biggest problems I have with adhd is the fact that no matter how much I try to pay attention in like reading something, i'll end up not remembering what I've just read, and I have to read it like it like 10-15 times, it gives me a big discomfort reading something I don't even care, not only I have to force myself to focus I also have to stay away of other thoughts, which is really stressing for me, it also makes me anxious because whenever I'm sad and I try to think of something else, my mind keeps thinking of what is making me sad, and normal people may say thats normal, but for people with adhd is really extreme and painful, at least with me, but on the other sider, it's really good for making connections, for paying attention to very small details without even knowing it, it makes me really fast at thinking, when I try to think of something my mind makes a lot of connections that are helpful, gives a really good and different way of thinking, and when you have the right stimulus you get really excited on something, for example, when I feel challenged at math i get really excited and I love it, those kind of intelectual challenges makes us really excited, those who think that people with adhd have learning dificulties and are more likely dumb are ignorant, we just dont think, study and act in the conventional way, but when we find what work for us we get really really good at it, sadly this society is more prepared for people that just work in a straight line and dont think outside of the box than for people like us

Exactly. Sometimes for my business communication class, I’m reading my textbook, and like halfway through a paragraph, I realize I have no idea what I’m reading about, so I have to go back a page and read it again. I also can’t read for more than like 20 minutes without feeling mentally exhausted

My little brother has an ADHD, he's 8 yo n our house is full of his art works. He's sooo good at everything he does, like painting, sculpturing (Yes, can sculpt anything ), problem solving and inventing new toys, he literally destroys his toys and makes something new out of it. He's always doing something 🧠⚡✨☠️

Growing up I was thought to be ADHD and later bipolar (manic/depressive). Hyperactivity (or mania) I've learned recently is one of the signs for phenylketonuria, which up until recently if I understand it right was not widely tested for. There could be many with PKU who are being treated for it with other things.

The older I get, the worse my anxiety gets and I feel more depressed. I don’t know if I have depression, but sometimes it feels like it. I definitely have insomnia though, most nights i go to bed at 3:00 AM without even trying. I can just sit and lay in my bed for hours, and my brain keeps on going. I take adderall every work/school day and quarantine is not helping me at all. Kinda shitty.

I've always felt different than everyone else but always aware of energys and pay attention to the way the world turns and the way people conduct themselves and interact with each other. I know one day I won't feel so alone in a crowd full of people.

A very hard thing I had to do was read this book, now normally, me, a person with adhd, has no problem reading books, after a bit I get into the zone.. but this book, this book was not like the others. It was a book I SHOULD’VE read over the summer, but I didn’t, I never do. I’ve forgotten the name but the setting was set back in the old days. That means that everyone talked like prates n stuff. It was so hard to read it, I was halfway and went, “screw it, I will skip to the end.” It was still so hard, the way they talked made it barely possible for me to complete my report. Once I had to do my second book however, it felt.. weird. I haven’t read any books besides that pirate one for a long time, so reading that, new book, “hatchet,” was refreshing, it excited me, I loved that book.
