    I had my shop broken into between X-Max and New Years of 2014. I lost almost all my tools including knives. The good part is my collection is nice and new again. First knife I immediately replaced was a Benchmade 943. Many were no longer made and still would like to have again. Like a Lone Wolf T2 and Bark River Grasso-Bolo 2. I started researching knife values (for insurance reasons) and I’ve been hooked on knife channels since. I did get another Cold Steel Recon 1 and SRK for my outdoor blades then slowly started collecting again.

      My 1st collection was also stolen,Problem is,that I had rare knives from the 80's and 90's, that some of them can't be replaced, or some are so expensive,that I will never be able to replace them again. I feel you! I build from scratch again

    • @dlrmon1
      @dlrmon1 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Luckily, knives I received as gifts or retired I still have which is most of my 70’s & 80’s stuff. My user collection is what I lost. I feel ya, I was only able to replace about 60% of them without paying stupid second hand prices. Would hate to have to do it again.

    • @dlrmon1
      @dlrmon1 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Luckily back then I had only worked my way up to a $300. per knife limit. A few of those are $800-$1000 today...last I looked anyway...

    I actually had this happen to me. I had a decent collection of knives (fixed and folders), axes, and swords. Our house was broken into and all of it was stolen along with various other items. I took a couple years off before collecting again. I thought carefully about my collection and how it was used. Most everything was just stored but not used except the folders. I now have a better collection than I did, but mainly folders so they get used.

    I convexed my Gerber Prodigy, which is almost identical to the Strongarm, using my old Lansky clamp sharpening system.
    It goes normally from 17 degrees to 35 degress or so. I added slots for 15 degrees and 13 degrees.
    So I sharpened the blade to 20 degrees and then convexed off the shoulder by using the 17, 15 and 13 degree settings, and did some blending in between, still using the clamp, but just going along side the slots instead of in them. I've done this on a number of knives and it works great.
    I've replaced most of my Lansky stones with the DMT Aligner stone holder and stones. Having used both, DMT seems to have significantly flatter and longer lasting diamond stones in a wider range of grits and are about the same price. The Lansky alumina stones are very nice for finishing.

    I've collected knives since my first cub scout knife that I earned in 1970. Had a house fire in 2015 that burned to the slab. Luckily all people and animals got out since it happened in the middle of the night. Nothing like corraling dogs, cats and kids in a burning house to wake you up quick. Ended up standing in the snow in our pajama's while the neighbor called 911. The barefoot trip in your pj's to Walmart to get basic clothes and supplies for the family was an experience.
    Lost everything that wasn't in my vehicle, rv or workshop. Rebuilding is slow and disheartening at times. Especially since we had just spent 2 years renovating and updating our dream house and were underinsured. The insurance company, who wasn't a good neighbor, wouldn't replace anything that I didn't have a picture or a receipt for. Of course, almost all evidence of ownership was in the house so...
    Don't trust the insurance companies, they are there to make a profit, not be nice to the customer. The employee's get their promotions and bonus's for NOT paying $$ to the customer. The lawyers and private adjuster's that you may need to hire to deal with the insurance company aren't covered in any policy. After over 3 years of fighting we ended up with about 66% (the apparent target % of most large insurance companies) of what they should have paid and that was with good lawyers and adjusters. Have backup pictures & receipts for everything stored offsite to make your life easier.
    So many items weren't being made anymore, those that were replaceable were usually several times the price. First blades replaced were my Esee's since they got daily use. Izula 2 and Esee 3 & 4. Then a few Cold Steel's. Don't really use multi tool's that often anymore so only one replaced was Leatherman Wave.

    Over the years I’ve actually sold off almost all of my collection. I’m still a knife fanatic and really enjoy getting my hands on new blades. Lately I’ve really started to get into esee. I know these are all fixed blades, but personally these were a good investment with the lifetime warranty. I primarily carry one folding knife, and it’s the Buck 112 Slim. Been carrying it for a little over a year now and it’s been quite solid. Completes almost all my daily tasks and it wouldn’t be a headache to replace it.

    When I was in highschool I was working for 6.15 an hour and bought my first knife which was a ka bar out of an army surplus catalog. I think I paid 60 bucks for it. I still have it and hopefully it never gets lost or stolen. I hope to pass that on to my kid someday. It has been through a lot but keeps on ticking. I've got custom knives now that I enjoy using a lot more but my ka bar will always have a special place in my heart.

    I once got about 700 miles from home before realizing I forgot my tool pack. I stopped at a Walmart and picked up a $23 Ontario Rat 1, the $50 version of the Ozark Trail copy of Leather Wave (Good tool by the way) and a $50ish Gerber Prodigy I think. I would absolutely hate for my knife collection to be destroyed or stolen. Sooooo, I spent my $80 ($86, to be exact) on a file safe from Home Depot. It is fire-resistant. I put my favorite and most expensive knives in it. The ones that don't go in are either carried on my body--I usually carry 3-4 EDC--or are easy and affordable to replace. It's my way to be prepared before a fire happens.

    Really love voyager knives. I personally like the tanto. For a fixed blade my misted used is my mini Pendleton hunter. How can you beat $30. It’s small but has a good handle is great for cleaning game and fish. The only multi tool I use is a gerber dime. I don’t find multi tools useful. I’m a mechanic if I need a screwdriver nothing beats a real screwdriver.
    Next I would get a machete. My favorite is my new on the condor terrachete. An my saw corona.

  • @matthewhebbert9712
    @matthewhebbert9712 Před 10 měsíci +1

    Great idea for a video. We seem to be in the same wheelhouse with your picks.
    If I lost everything and was rebuilding a tool collection, my 100% first choice would be the Leatherman Wave+. The toolset on the Wave+ has everything I want and use regularly: scissors, pliers, screwdriver, blade, and file. Mostly though, as someone who relies on eyeglasses, not many tools come with a precision driver thay can be used on the tiny screws used in most glasses. The precision bits have also been very useful in repairing computers and other electronics.
    Number 2 would be the Gerber Strongarm, for all the reasons you mentioned.
    Number 3 would be the Fiskars X7 hatchet. Great for yardwork, great for camp work.
    Number 4 would be a Silky saw of some sort, probably a Pocketboy. Again, super useful both at home and at camp.
    Number 5 might be a weird choice for many people, but I'd probably have to pick up another Milwaukee Fastback. A disposable utility blade you don’t have to worry about sharpening comes in handy all the time, and having a solid centerdrive Phillips/flathead screwdriver on hand is always coming in handy.
    An honorable mention: the Boker Kalishnikov in XHP. I don't think this is still available, but it might be my most used knife. I carry it as a neck knife, and I've beat the tar out of it, and it just won't quit. The blade stays super sharp, is easy to maintain, and it is still as snappy as it was when i bought it years ago.

    Funny you would start the folder collection with a Cold Steel Voyager. I have probably 200 knives in my collection, and my Cold Steel Voyager clip point is my go-to knife for "dirty" or "beater knife" duties. There's just something about the design that screams "work horse," and it has taken every job I've ever thrown at it like a champ.

    Tops steel eagle / war Bowie (whichever is available, knowing tops) and cut 4.0, Victorinox Huntsman and rambler, Leatherman Skeletool CX (which was under 80$ when I got it) + bit kit. I know this doesn't help with the 80$ cap. But this would be my first pick.
    Under 80$: cold Steel Recon tanto and mini tac (skinner if I can still find), Victorinox Huntsman, Leatherman Skeletool and a Kershaw leek with 14C28N blade. Throw in the bit kit from Leatherman for all the $$ saved.
    Skeletool as choice of multitool because I've never really needed a pocket knife since I got my skeletool CX. The 154CM blade has held out for almost a decade in humid tropical india without rusting and with minimal care. That + bit kit just amplifies the capabilities of the tool significantly. I carry a CUT 4.0 as my main blade + Skeletool Cx and a Victorinox Rambler on my keychain. This system has been working very well for nearly 6 years now.

    Aaron, I can get behind your first pick Joker. You mentioned my multi tool pick with the Rebar because I don't mind a sheath. But... Instead of buying 2 pocket folders that I don't use anyway, I would spread that $160 budget over 2 fixed blades. My current EDC is the Buck Alpha Hunter, large one, and I would go with the Spartan/Harsey fighter by KABAR for my bigger fixed blade.

    I’d grab a Leatherman Rebar, Kershaw Leek, CJRB Pyrite, and I don’t have much use for a fixed blade so instead of two fixed blades I’d have to replace my Buck Ranger Sport 112.

    I played a similar game with myself. What If I had to get rid of all but 3 items out of my stuff, what would I keep? • @jimbolxvi6428
    @jimbolxvi6428 Před 10 měsíci

    I’m glad the threshold is $80 so I’m only losing one of my 5. My multitool can continue as the Leatherman Bond, folding knife has been a Buck 110 on my belt everyday for 47 years and that ain’t changing so the 110 and for that rate occasion I travel to a stupid 3” blade location the Buck 110 gives the Buck 112 a few days of work. My small fixed stays as my Izula II and the one loss is my big fixed as the ESEE 6 is outside the $80 range so the Buck 119 will fill that role. So my 5 is Buck 110, 112, 119, ESEE Izula II and Leatherman Bond.

    Hmm if it was all gone? Id probably take my Mora Kansbol as a fixed blade.
    Now for folders id want an axis lock knife. Luckily there are many now to choose from. I lobe my Freek and mini Crooked river but maybe id try a new one out!.
    For spyderco, id actually skip all of them except for one. A spyderco Kapara. The compression Lock and the blade design are too good and its the best spyderco i own with the Sliverax as a secondary.
    Thats 3 so far so id also add a Front flipper into the mix because i love them to death. If i could find a WE Shamwari, id get that in a heart beat, but id take any similar shaped knife. Id skip the super thin front flippers that ive bought before.
    And last, if get a Drop Laconico Keen. One of my best and prettiest normal flippers and my favorite. Im rocking a bright purple one now, so maybe id try a different colour.
    That's 5 but lets me honest, id try to buy more cheap knives like the CJRB Pyrite button lock, and new civivi knives and such.... because collecting is half the fun
