    I got a Fox Parang a few weeks ago using your BladeHQ link for the first time. Prompt service from them and I absolutely love that blade. It makes a perfect mid-size chopper to take on day trips. Looking for something more in this size range (4-5" blade) next. Thanks again!

    I just got a pr4 and put 1/8” liners on it, adding 1/4” total to the grip. I wet formed the stock sheath and it fits fine. I jammed a regular sharpie marker to fill the void so that the leather wouldn’t stink the knife in when it dried.

    Wet the leather sheath, wrap the knife in plastic wrap and shove it in the wet sheath. It’ll form it to your PR4. Should stretch the leather to prevent any tearing. 👍

    I see the blade designs being good for different things. That sowbelly design of the JG5 would be great for slicing and skinning tasks. Anyone who has ever caped a deer or elk knows how handy that rounded blade contour is when removing the hide of an animal. For more general purposes and camping/bushcraft I would choose the PR4.

    I know knives are very much a personal preference. that being said, I really like the look of the PR4. not in the budget right now, but definitely on my (growing) list of wants. Question for you, I also have very large hands ( I wear xl gloves, and generally need to stretch them a bit) if I were to remove the scales and cut 2 pieces of kydex that perfectly matched the scales and got slightly longer screws, would that make up for the thin scales?

  • @mrkultra1655
    @mrkultra1655 Před 5 lety +5

    I just recently discovered your channel, nice work. I like your honest reviews, while actually showing what the products can do. I bought an ESSE PR 4 a few months ago, and I love it. It does pretty much anything I need it to do. The PR4 is a sort of Horace Kephart design, while the JG5 is more like a George Washington Sears "Nessmuck" design. One thing, however, about your knife reviews, and most others for that matter, is that I never see anyone demonstrating knives and their capabilities while wearing gloves. I usually always wear a pair of gloves while using a knife, hachet, axe, etc... My PR4 feels perfect in my hand while wearing just a plain split cowhide glove. Something to think about.

    SOAK the leather in water then put the knife in (oil it for rust prevention) and let it sit... leather is meant to be shaped and it's simply not SHAPED to the knife... it will most certainly "fit".

    Ps: i like the price of the PR4 here in europe. Such a good quality 🇺🇸 made knife for around hundred euros. Thats perfect.
    I just returned the Benchmade Puukko 200. Didnt liked the opening where the knive enters the rubber handle because water and dirt can enter there. And the sheath was beautiful but not right. The knife just fell out en the leather was really thin for a €150 euros knife.

    I would like to see the PR4 with at least a 4 1/2" blade and thicker scales. My issue with almost all of the Essee knives is they lack function due to slightly off designs. Plus I'm just not a fan of 1095 and the stupid black sandpaper paint coating. The oxide coating on these blades really make them standout. A huge move in the right direction. I have an Essee 4 that I stripped the coating off of, reprofiled the edge to make it a true flat grind, and squared off the spine, I now have a functional knife. But still wish the tip was closer to the centerline rather than being up near the spine. I have yet to see an Essee knife that I think they got right. Drives me nuts cause I think they're a good company.

      @mattlwyatt Před 5 lety +2

      I have the PR4 and ESEE 4. If it helps you decide, the PR4 is kind of a blend of the 3 and 4. It is the length of the ESEE 4 but the thickness of the ESEE 3. The thinness makes a much better slicer. Everything's personal and even though I own lots of ESEEs I have trouble deciding. If between the PR4, 3 or 4... I personally would choose a PR4 and add a CR2.5 when able.

    Those handle scales make ALL the difference with the PR4... something that ESEE might take into consideration. I actually prefer good micarta to G10, but I would definitely take those aftermarket g10 scales over the stock micarta. If they made those scales in micarta, that would be perfect. Also, I really wish that ESEE would give kydex sheath options right out of the gate. I don't mind the leather in some cases, but sometimes you just want to buy a knife and not have to look for third party options that cost you another $50-$100. ;)

      @kriskabin Před 11 měsíci

      I have the PR4, & I like the high saber grind. It's slicier than a scandi grind, but it comes down to what you're using the blade for. I do a lot of food prep with my PR4. A scandi grind usually sucks at cutting vegetables, for example. A high saber grind is more versatile, imo. Convex blades are nice too; Bark River Knives.

    Thank you for doing these videos. You are doing a great job helping people make informed decisions. I'm the guy who just buys all 3 (haha) but for those who have to pick 1, this video is really helpful.
