    Gorgeous dress and they all look wonderful on you! I loved this video thank you. Just as a counter-view to come one else’s comment below, I *love* all the chat. So often I really identify with things you say and I enjoy hearing your thoughts on various topics. I often pick up on a real gem of an idea or learning tip from comments you make.

    Love the dresses! I especially love the prints. I don’t wear prints much and maybe I need to change that. I also appreciate the honesty about how you feel about your body right now. It has taken me a lifetime to learn to accept my body the way it is. And I still struggle some days. I do believe getting “dressed” everyday helps. It’s a good habit to cultivate. This was a great video, Whitney. Thanks for sharing.

      I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It's funny that I don't wear a lot of prints in my separates (other than stripes), but I just LOVE a good print in a dress or jumpsuit!

    I want to thank you for reminding me that when you don’t feel your best, if you look and act the way you want your best to be it will make you feel better. I turned 68 this year and my body has completely changed over the last 10 years. It feels out of my control. I still work full time and with COVID the “dress code” at work has become much more relaxed. I have gone down that path with everyone else and become a “shlump”. It’s time to step up my game and dress this strange body to look it’s best. It has to help! Thanks for the reminder.

    I’m in the “what happened to my body” bucket, only I’m probably at least 20 years older, lol. And yes, I really do know what happened, lol, I just don’t like it.
    All these dresses are what I could sew myself, would flatter my shape, be modest and still feel comfy and stylish.

    I have been trying for over a year to get the resolution pattern fitted to my daughter. I gave up and moved to the Duets. That one I managed to get fitted with far less grief. I will return to the Resolution pattern after I make her some tops that she’s requested. Hi btw! Been awhile since I’ve watched because I have been trying to sew those dang pants. ;)

      @TomKatStitchery  Před 2 lety +1

      Pants fitting can be so frustrating! I haven't made the legging version on the Resolutions, but I did notice there is a bit of a dropped crotch on the joggers, which I actually appreciate on a jogger, maybe not on a legging, though!

    What a fantastic collection of knit dresses, Whitney! Your hacked Love Notions Rhapsody dress took me back to the early 90’s when I was teaching. I lived in the knit dresses from Eddie Bauer; the cotton/Lycra fabric was absolutely wonderful quality and they offered several different patterns, solids, and skirt styles. So, I’m sure you understand why I was very excited to hear you’re going to cover the basics of hacking my favorite top pattern into this “I will wear it forever and a day” dress! I can see why you’ve been living in these dresses….who wouldn’t?

    I omit pockets in most of my me made dresses for that reason. It looks bulky and you can't put anything in them or it weighs it down. I even omit them from my joggers most of the time. Its so nice to see someone else not be a fan when everyone else is still like "It has pockets!".

    I love all of these dresses! They look fantastic on you and I am totally going to make some of these as I’ve been wanting to make some knit dresses for fall/winter. I feel like sewing can really do a number on body confidence since we’re always measuring, and seeing those numbers CONSTANTLY in our face is hard at times. Also spending so much time in the making and money on the fabric just to have the piece not fit can feel terrible. I appreciate your honesty in talking about these things.

Don’t beat yourself up though because what I see in the pictures you still look great in everything. I can’t wait to see how you sew the dress. I so want to make a dress. Sewing is little slow down here in Florida mainly due to poor lighting in all the rooms. I can see why women back in the day gave up sewing due to poor vision. Plan on having a ott lamp next time we come. I’m still enjoying what sewing I am able to get done.

    You should use the solid purple jersey to make something like the kwik sew 3916 view A. It would look fab over all your jersey dresses to add a layer of unfussy warmth. Provides your outfit with pockets if you didn't add them to the dress due to bulk. Plus it would be great over your elastic back pants and t-shirts. Lends a nice vertical visual line adding a slimming effect. Win win win 😃

    I love these videos you do of the patters and places where you get your fabrics. I often use the links to see if the fabric companies have the same fabric in my colors (I’m a Moonlit Summer). I have a huge ask… when watching I’ll make a list of the patterns I want to check out. If you could mention the name of the pattern after you describe it (and before going on to the next pattern) that would be great! After hearing your description and seeing the pictures if I think it might work for me, I can’t remember what the name of the pattern is. (I have the memory of a sieve).
    Love, love, love your channel! Thank you for all you’re doing!

    Hi Whitney, I’m trying to fix on the best knitting pattern to utilise a lovely piece of fabric I have in my stash - but it’s (I think!) a soft viscose 4way stretch jersey which drapes amazingly but equally wouldn’t work for a pattern needing a bit of structure. I have been looking at Tallinn but am concerned that without a waist seam to support it, the material may over stretch - BUT it looks like your Tallin that you are wearing on this video is equally fine jersey. What do you think?.. PS LOVE YOUR VIDEOS - never miss any and you are my go-to!

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 měsíci

      I agree that a viscose jersey doesn't work well with a pattern needing a bit of structure. I didn't make the Tallinn in this video, but I did make the Antrim (and used a lovely viscose jersey) for this video. The Tallinn would be fabulous in a lightweight Ponte or a cotton/spandex jersey. I, too, would worry that the lack of waist seam would make it grow. I did make the Wanderlust in this video, which also doesn't have a waist seam and I find it's best in those fabrics with more structure as well!

    Concerning the choice of colors: as Whitney used a lighter backdrop print, I surprised myself, just like Whitney did. I discovered that as long as there are TWO colors thereon the print, I might not stress too much about choosing the lighter backdrop WITH ONE EXCEPTION: For instance, my personal colors require an eggshell or cream backdrop. If on the other hand I choose a white backdrop, it makes the garment look really good but that wrong choice of white makes the impression of 'cheap Lucy'. I wish I could wear beautiful, clean looking white but NOPE! I need the soft, warm 'off' white. So the lighter backdrop can work well--the all over impression is what you'll like best, and too, you'll feel good wearing it as well. ~ L

    Whitney, this was such a wonderful video. All you dresses and fabrics used were perfect and so lovely. Yes, yes, yes, on how you made the Rhapsody into a dress. I have the pattern so I’m very interested. Btw, I don’t know if you can answer the question but here goes, my body shape is totally opposite of you I am a triangle, not inverted like you. Would these dress work for someone with a smaller bust

    • @TomKatStitchery

      I think they would definitely work with a smaller bust! In fact, I often find these types of dresses more flattering on a smaller bust. Sometimes my larger bust can make things stand far away from my body and make me look larger than I am.

    Hi Whitney Thanks for the video. I want to make a tunic length version of the tiered dress and don’t understand how the bottom (of the two tiers I plan) will be gathered if both tiers are width of fabric. Maybe I should just make top tier less wide.?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 2 lety

      That's a good point that I forgot to address. While I start with the full width, I often don't get it all gathered into the "flat piece". Because I like to gather with my serger I prefer to have to cut off the excess instead of not having enough. That being said, I often have to piece together a couple widths of fabric for the bottom tiers of gathered dresses.

    Great dresses!! Do you ever have a problem with your knit fabric getting stuck in the hole that the bobbin thread comes up through?? When I sew knits this seems to happen a lot… it’s like the fabric is too flexible and goes down the hole w the needle? I am using a knit needle? If you already have a video that addresses this I’d like to watch. Thank you so much for your videos, ideas, smiles and great sewing tips!!

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 2 lety +1

      I don't have this issue, but I also have a single hole throat plate on my machine so fabric very rarely gets sucked into the machine. Usually, if you have a wider opening throat plate (which is necessary for a zig zag stitch) fabric, especially knits, can easily be sucked into the machine. If you hold the top and bottom thread right as you start and give it a slight tug as you start the seam, it will keep the fabric from getting sucked in!

    Once again, another fabulous video! What do you think about adding a very lightweight knit interfacing to the facing of the Olympia dress? Or don't you think it needs it?

      I"m so glad you're enjoying it! As far as the Olympia, you might be able to interface a section of it, but it does need to stretch to fit the back neckline, which helps the back neck to keep from sagging.

    Hi Whitney, I hope you don’t mind me asking this question (please feel free to ignore if you do). I just don’t understand your pattern sizing for the Pattern Emporium dresses. The high bust and bust measurements on these patterns for a size 10 appear to be 2 or 3 sizes smaller than what you would normally go for. I am a 39” bust and that puts me in a size 14 in most of their patterns and I don’t need a full bust adjustment. Please would you mind explaining your rationale behind the size choice. I personally wouldn’t drop down 2 or 3 sizes in a knit dress as I’d not want it so close fitting. It would really help to know how you worked out your size in PE patterns. Thank you.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 2 lety +1

      I don't mind answer this question at all! First, I misspoke and I actually made a size 12, not a 10 (I'll rectify that in the description box and say something on the channel). I picked the size based on my upper bust which is 36" (this is in the size 12 upper bust range). I then did a knit/dartless FBA for it to fit my 40" full bust. I'm somewhat petite in my shoulder area so I always pick my size based on my upper bust measurement and then make the adjustments to fit my full bust (usually an FBA). Does that help?

I can’t always stick with the chatter on some of the other sewing channels so I will either speed up the play time or skip to the sewing reveals. It especially annoys me when people make a ritual of pausing to drink something at regular intervals - I mean, really….why not cut that part out?
