@@cuivre2004 Back then was when people like a Lena Horne, etc., early on had to try to "pass" to get recognition in the business. Nowadays the term wouldn't get coined. In fact, Elvis had to try to "pass" for gospel exposure. In Horne's case, it would have been on radio for "plays" and also accommodations in certain areas. For Presley, it would have been radio and for black gospel only, as opposed to southern gospel where there'd be no issue.

@@kenretherford1197 If you watch many of these where Martin Gabel had become a semi-regular in the seat vacated at Fred Allen's death, you will note that he is a brilliant, cultured man with a warm heart, a deep sense of justice, a ready humor/wit, and he was, in fact, one of the finest American stage actors we have ever known in this country. He loved his country, wife, son, and heritage, but nothing about the man was truly dorky. Not that dorky is bad, but he had a natural sophistication and comfort with himself that most lack.

Bennett was a weird guy from all the episodes I've seen, he acted very friendly with a number of ladies on the show and then would sometimes act like a stick in the mud with both women and men IIRC (I'm pretty sure he had a particularly bad encounter with the actor Henry Morgan in one episode).

When I heard Bennett say in that audio tape that Dorothy only cared about air time and winning the game, I watched numerous 'what's my line?' videos to try to spot her getting as much air time as possible, but I couldn't actually find one, I noticed that she does play the game quite seriously but I didn't notice any unnecessary questions asked by her that wouldn't be asked by others on the panel. I actually thought that Bennett was the one who was trying to get the longest period of time on air

I think she asked very carefully worded questions to try very hard (sometimes tortuously) to not get a no answer.
This often led to long stretches of questions.
But I didn't mind it. She and Arlene and Bennett all had their own style and along with John, each helped make the show great.
I never loved the fourth spot, Tony Randall was about the best of the guests. And for me, the show was almost unwatchable after Dorothy passed.
I liken it to Golden Palace compared to Golden Girls. You still had 3 of the 4 main actors, but somehow it didn't quite work.

This broadcast comes after the era of the gambit, so everything here is spontaneous. All of Arlene's witticisms, all those cow puns one after another during Dorothy's questions Arlene got them off to a great start -- figuring out early that he did something to animals and then with the funny lines. Me -- I would have asked some dull question like, "If in your mind's eye you draw a horizontal line through the middle of a cow, do you work above that line?" Yawn.
