There's an article (I think in SI) from 30 years ago about how Duke and UNC nearly met for the national title in 1991 where Coach K is quoted as saying that he hopes the schools never play each other in the Final Four because it would be so devastating as to be potentially a program-changer for whomever loses.

There’s no greater feeling as a Tarheel fan than the end of this year even without the championship. Like a long term bond finally maturing. Next up; ending Steve Alford’s career. 4 out of 5 starters back in the fall sets Davis’ UNC squad up nicely for next year.
This has a lot of of the same vibes from the 2017 championship team. Heartbreaking loss the year prior, they come back and clean house and win the natty. Hubert’s got this program back at the top, and I don’t see that changing for the next decade.

As a Carolina fan, I never wanted that NCAA matchup to happen for that exact reason. The risk reward ratio was never going to be worth it because the losing team will probably never get a chance for payback.
At least they didn't win the chip man that would have been so bad for us Duke fans to have that top off their season lol it was easily the most painful Duke loss in history.

They always had the upper hand, I just never got this notion about Dook. Carolina has more wins, more final fours more championships more players drafted into the NBA, more players and coaches in the Hall of Fame. It's always been about K not dook and Carolina is about the players and the school.
I don't even think dook has one hall of famer. They may more highly ranked recruits as of present but they have nothing to show for it. UNC has the better star players and it's not even close. You can even beg to say that most of the other blue bloods have had better success in the pro levels as well. Especially Nova

I keep returning to this vid. The best coach DUKE will likely ever have with the best players that DUKE will likely ever recruit, yet the program can only manage a 50-50 record vs. UNC. In the end Coach K was the Mule from Asimov's "Foundation" series. A mutant that put the natural order at risk, yet now neutralized, UNC will return as the undisputed king of the ACC.
50 wins a piece each in their 100 meetings since Coach K became Duke’s coach in 1980.
2006 Ohio St/Michigan game comes to mind. Both undefeated. Ranked 1 & 2. OSU won 42-39 then promptly got smashed by the Gators in the championship game.

Almost 2 years later, this video is as great as it was in April of 2022. Rich Eisen is spot on. The rivalry is forever tilted and this is the ultimate trump card with no expiration date!
Professional sports( in America at least) don't have true rivalries anymore. Because ultimately, if the players don't hate each other, there's no substance. College sports have the only true rivalries because along with spectators, the players give a damn. And that feeds thr proverbial fire. So don't bring NFL or NBA or maybe even MLB rivalries, because 95% of the players are buddy buddy with each other.
Agreed. There are literally no NBA rivalries at all. In the NFL I've actually seen some rivalries like Baltimore vs Tennessee, there was actual bad blood between the players and coaches. But overall I agree, the rivalries are completely dead.
Also, they don't stay in college long enough to build any kind of relationship with the fans. When this season started, I had no idea who these guys were wearing the Duke uniform outside of Williams and Banchero.

Anyone from tobacco road will tell you that it was the biggest game of the rivalry for various reasons, UNC & DUKE has never ever met in the NCAA tournament and it was K's last year, Hubert's first year, tie breaker of each team having a regular season win... EVEN in a championship game an overachieving UNC losing to Kansas doesn't hurt as bad as an underachieving DUKE losing to it's rival UNC in the Final 4... I don't think the Rivalry is over like Rich is insinuating but the UNC win was so huge that the Austin Rivers moment is all but forgotten lol

The game, whoa...K's final run, was the ultimate representation of what makes Duke-UNC the greatest rivalry in sports. First time in the NCAA's, but this wasn't an anomaly at all. Duke-UNC games are like this. Pretty much always two great teams, incredible intensity with each possession. Caleb Love's shot was the latest, but there have been many from both sides that consistently built this unprecedented rivalry. Could've gone either way...like most of them.
Yes, Carolina has the better overall history, but give it up to Coach K for bringing Duke basketball into that world. Many have tried, few have even remotely come close, but he got them there.
