This is the most underrated western film with the best opening scenes of any western ever made, the rain, the flames, the thunder and flashing lightning, the colors, the music, the darkness, the shadows and the wind, the tension, the fear and the brutal ruthlessness, makes the searchers and shane seem like shallow and serene sunday school picnics by any cinematic comparison and so haunting, emotionally effective, totally unforgettable.
I don't even mind the obvious dubbing!

Classic western. Suprising that it was not met with as much critical praise as other westerns of that era.
Damn, this print is 100 times better than the washed out one on the DVD I'm watching.
It happens sometimes you buy a dvd and an online copy is better
Kino Lorber has a decent Blu-ray copy with the proper aspect ratio and audio.
How many of us saw these as kids on Saturday or Sunday winter nights, snuggled by the wood stove when the work was all done with mama in her rocker, her crochet needle making something useful, and pa with his tired feet up in his lounge chair. I watched them again as young, divorced and struggling mom on a late night that couldn't sleep and off work. Here I am all worn out, alone and enjoying them again in the middle of night with my faithful dog and two cats curled up with me to keep me company because my family is all dead and gone. Thanks you tube for bringing these old movies back to us for free. I hope you never stop.

I remember my dad playing this movie on one of those sunny Saturdays back in 2006 when i was 3 years old or so. Kick ass movie, it's all i have to say.
I don't get the low ratings. This movie is amazing! It has nearly every element you want in a Western, including Lee Van Cleef and a great story!
It was pme of the first movies made in spain i think with a american actor. thats why it was so lowly rated,,,,,, it like a foren film winning the Ocars . just never happen , but it did lead the way for the fist fill of dollrs moves that all did very well and made clint eastwood a magger star

watched it as a child at age of 10... couldn't lift it out of my head since then! 30 years later I am watching it again.... what a great movie, what a great performance. I would go to the Cinema today if they would show that up... scenes 17:48, 1:10:44 and the last one are probably the greatest. Haven't seen things like this in any of the new gash movies... I WILL SEE YOU AROUND GRANDPA

Never saw it when it first came out, but I am hooked.
Third time watching it, and I still enjoy it
I love this movie, although it didn't quite stick the ending for me. I can't help but wish Van Cleef's character had been one of the out-and-out evil characters at the start, thus making the painstakingly signposted reveal at the end something that's genuinely shocking. It would make subsequent watches equally enjoyable: seeing him strolling the plains as an even more humbled, battle-weary, conflicted, and remorseful character. This movie didn't quite have the nihilism that is present in the absolute top-tier Westerns, mainly because of the script.
Speaking of which, in the original script, at 1:10:44 Ryan's full outpouring was: 'I was thinkin' ... I would have liked to have had a son like you ... because I'll probably end up some day with bullet in my back ... and there won't be any son to avenge me. ' Van Cleef really rescued the scene by dropping the over-sentimentality! I noticed both of those scenes have the most beautiful track from the movie too. I'll never tire of this film.
I saw this movie at the Post Theater in Fort Sam Houston shortly after I returned from duty in Vietnam. Full confession: I was tripping on acid at the time. I had nightmares for a long time afterwards! But now, 52 years later - w/o the "benefit" of chemicals - I'm ready to watch it again and find out what it was all about - with a nightlight on, of course! 😲

saw it in 72 when it came out. Zanjeer came soon after though salim-javed denied copying it. Some bits also found in Yaadon ki baaraat.

Lee was a first class submarine sonar man in the Navy , awarded bronze and good conduct medals , Lee always were those Calvary boots outside his pants , he had different eyes colours but he used a coloured lens to match one another so he wouldn’t scare people , I think he should’ve had let it as it was cos he was very cool indeed.

Excellent movie... love the character of Lee Van Cleef ! This is better than a Fistful of Dollars, and the Good Bad and Ugly.... Clint sole the show...and Lee Van Cleef died in one of them....however, the Italian Spaghetti western style of making movie brings the emotions to begin with.... I'd watch it again!! Masterpiece
John Phillip Law played a great Russian sailor in the "Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming" filmed a year prior to this. I can't believe that Ennio Morricone who scored this movie along with The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, was the same guy who scored (the original) The Thing. His music is all over the map.
And Orca. Made a cheesey copycat film into some depressing,deep, and thought provoking stuff with his score
