Pericarditis refers to inflammation of the pericardium, the double-walled, fluid-filled sac that encloses the heart. The pericardial cavity contains a fluid which serves as lubricant and allows the heart to contract and relax with minimum friction. It also protects the heart from infection and over-distension.
The most common form is acute pericarditis, meaning symptoms develop suddenly but do not last long. Subacute and chronic forms develop more slowly and last longer. Recurrent pericarditis is when there are symptom-free intervals in between episodes.
A typical symptom of acute pericarditis is chest pain, which can be sharp or dull. The pain may radiate to the left shoulder or arm, similar to that of a heart attack, or ischemia. Unlike ischemic pain, however, pericardial pain is worsened with deep breathing, coughing, swallowing, or lying flat; and improved with sitting up or leaning forward.
Inflammation of the pericardium can cause fluid to accumulate in the pericardial cavity. This is called pericardial effusion. The increased fluid volume may limit cardiac filling, leading to low cardiac output and sometimes life-threatening circulatory shock, known as cardiac tamponade. The rate at which fluid accumulates is often more critical than the volume of fluid. Slow accumulation of a large volume may not cause tamponade, but a relatively small effusion can do so if it builds up too rapidly, because the pericardium cannot stretch quickly enough to accommodate it.
Less commonly, chronic inflammation may also result in a thickened and stiffened pericardium, a condition known as constrictive pericarditis. As the stiff pericardium reduces cardiac filling, blood backs up in the body’s veins and the lungs, where it came from. A peripheral venous congestion leads to swelling of legs and abdominal organs, while an elevated pulmonary pressure results in difficulty breathing.
The cause of pericarditis is often difficult to determine. Possible causes include: viral infection, bacterial infection, injury to the chest, inflammatory disorders, other health problems, and some medications. Pericarditis may also develop following a heart attack or cardiac surgery. It can happen immediately after, or as a delayed form several weeks later.
Diagnosis can usually be made based on evaluation of chest pain, and presence of pericardial rub, a characteristic sound produced when pericardial layers rub against each other; but tests are commonly performed to confirm, and to exclude heart attack. In about half of patients, electrocardiograms show changes that go through a characteristic sequence of four stages. Pericardial effusion, if present, can be seen with echocardiography or chest x-ray.
Treatment depends on the cause and disease severity. Mild cases may get better on their own without treatment.
Pain and inflammation can be relieved with anti-inflammatories.
Corticosteroids may be used for non-infectious cases that do not respond to other medicines. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics, and possibly drainage.
If cardiac tamponade is present, a procedure called pericardiocentesis is performed to remove the excess fluid from the pericardial cavity. Severe constrictive pericarditis may require surgical removal of the pericardium, as a last resort.

I’m 29 and I think I had this for about a year last year. Symptoms were: tight chest, pain when breathing, and some gurd. Very happy to say that it has totally cleared up but it was a very scary time. Went to the hospital twice (which for me is very out of the ordinary) and got EKGs. Both times they came back fine. Also, based on studies in European countries, it is not highly recommended to get Moderna vaccine to men because of this reason. I dont have a choice about what vaccine should i take so i just went for Moderna.
I am not an anti vaxxer, thats why i had second dose. I was vaccinated with lal different kind of vaccines like for tetanus, flu shots, for measles and etc but this Covid vaccine has really bad side effect.
The first dose has very mild side effect bit the second dose was bad. The first 3 days after the vaccine second dose was the worst flu like synptoms i haf for the last 10 years. I never had 38.5C of fever in the last 10 years. I was bed ridden for 3 days. But i understand that it was just a vaccine side effect so i was hoping for the best.
Unfortunately, 2 weeks after, i had chest problems that i thought jist because of my anxiety and costochondritis, however when i got ECG, the result was not normal for in the last 30 years of my life.
Again, i still believe on Covid vaccine and still planning to get booster but i would suggest that to othe rpeopke to pick the right vaccine for their age and gender ocz it matters.

I was recently diagnosed with pericarditis. I had an scary experience when driving to work and my chest tightened upon me of all a sudden, freaking me out (as I never ever had chest pain before as I am 36) it kinda calmed before I could pull off the road, but when I got to work it passed, confusing me, I assumed maybe it was a panic attack, but had a milder attack when I sat down to start work, and my coworker noticed my reaction of grabbing at my chest and I told her I had chest pain so I was accompanied to my boss’s office and when he heard what happened he asked if he should call 000 (and I decided I rather want to know what was happening so said yes) after a ride to in hospital with the paramedics snd waiting for a bit in the ramping area (had blood taken and my form filled while waiting) then having a ecg and then an chest x ray taken, my doctor said everything but the ecg was clear and the ecg showed a bizarre pattern that he recognised as pericarditis then said that since I recently had Covid it may have been possible that I got a viral side effect of it. I was discharged and said I have to take pain relief and should be okay in a few weeks but I should follow up with my GP. I’m glad that I have a reason why I originally had the chest pain in the first place and decided to take action.

I got this as a side affect from my second vaccine, which was July 13. It started about two weeks later and still going. I was taking Indomethacin for 3 weeks and Colchicine for 3 months. I thought it was finally getting better but then when I started to walk around or take the stairs it came back just as bad. My cardiologist did tell me no walking, no stairs and try to have everything on the same floor. Sleeping is awful too. I also go unto coughing fits which makes the pain even worse. Its awful.

So you can’t get this from any type of fungus or mold. My daughter has this and she is only 13. She is very healthy and they can’t figure out why she has it.

Man here I am at 16, smoking most likely caused this for me. I was trying to figure out this pain for 2 weeks now. Scheduled an appointment and my doctor said my lungs sound fine, and also my lungs feel fine. I can breathe fine since I quit which I’m glad I did.
