  • Will it run again? This Jaguar (Daimler) XJ40 overheated badly and lost all of its coolant. Did the engine make it? Or does it have a blown head gasket? Let's find out!

    I think given that the early digital dash cars are getting quite rare, especially in Daimler trim you should save this!

    I had an 88 Daimler 3.6 in the mid 90`s, I loved it, unfortunately the hose that runs under the inlet manifold (from the water pump) split on the motorway, at high speed, letting all the water out instantaneously.. It got me home, misfiring & smoking badly, but the next morning, it was seized! I left it round the back of my parents for around 20 years, & finally got round to stripping it a few years back (I have a set of Daimler side chromes in the parts stash!)..
    Daimler XJ40`s are so rare now, especially in black, if the underside isn't rotten, I think I`d either do the head gasket (seeing as that ones not seized), or, maybe do a complete engine swap with a rusty donor car (maybe an X300 XJR swap!).

    Please save this Daimler! It’s too good to break just for a blown head gasket.

    it's been a while, but there was a telltale spot on the right side of the engine that always showed when the head gasket on an AJ engine was leaking. You could see and feel motor oil in that spot.
    I had a friend with a VdP Majestic that had a very minor leak (135k miles) by seeing the oil on the right side of the block. He took it to a show and the head gasket blew. Because it was in pristine condition, he had the car towed to the Jaguar dealer. They planed the head (because they warp if you overheat them) and put in a new gasket. He drove the car home. A few thousand miles later, it started running hot. He ended up selling the car on ebay with the problem documented. It didn't fetch much money, as people knew by then that the AJ engines typically were trash after overheating.

    Ths one shoud be saved. Certainly in the UK these are starting to be collectable, and this one seems to be really pretty good

    Yay, XJ40! Mine will need to have its head gasket replaced at some point. It is only normal for a +-200000km AJ6 to need a new one; nothing is broken on mine. The cause was bad quality original head gasket. I have a very slow coolant level "leak".

    • @LivingWithAClassic
      @LivingWithAClassic  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Yes all AJ6 engines will need the head gasket doing at least once

    The lattice 16" wheels on the car are quite valuable. You should grab them for your XJS.

      It sometiomes happens that a driver is not that experienced and has never been in a car where the engine temperature is rising. I remember examples of people who just kept on driving until it was not possible to get any further and the engine stopped.

      @timothyrdunning Or that engine turns itself off if it deems it's unsafe for itself to continue given cooling issues. But then the siuation arises where it turns itself off on a railroad crossing and driver gets killed.

    I would park it up and wait for an engine to turn up. There are just none of those left now and not enough to scrap one. Is it me or do the square lamp '40's look better than a Series III or an X300?

    • @LivingWithAClassic
      @LivingWithAClassic  Před 10 měsíci

      It’s not my car so the decision isn’t mine. It is rust free but that is pretty much all it has going for it. Bad engine, bad brakes, bad interior, etc

    • @berwhaletheavenger
      @berwhaletheavenger Před 10 měsíci

      'Rust free' is not a phrase you hear about the XJ40 in the UK. These were the final pre Ford (i.e proper) Jaguars.
